Statement of Purpose Prime Mover: Fact 1: The three "base" coatings - TiN, TiCN and TiAIN - currently make up more than ! o# the $o rl d% s coat in g ma rket& Th e Ti N coat in g ha s no $ be en supe rced ed in ma ny applications by the TiAlN coating& Fact ': TiAlN is a hard coating $ith high thermal and o(idation resistance& TiAlN is ideal #or high speed and high temperature applications& The coatings ha)e high toughness and stability, $ith impro)ed ductility compared $ith that o# TiN coatings& The reason #or this is the #ormation o# Al ' * + on the sur#ace o# the tool $hich increases the operational temperature range o# the coat ing to !! ! C comp are d $ith !! ! C #or TiN& This has recently been increased by the addition o# chromium and yttrium or )anadium to the coating increasing the temper ature range beyon d !! !
