After edging Waukon and Crestwood in respective finals of 19-18 and 21-20 to start the season, Decorah rallied in the final minutes to defeat defend- ing Class 3A state champion West Delaware 31-27. The Vikings had a little easier time against Waterloo East (45-8) last week to remain undefeated, and now they sail into Charles City to take on the Comets during their Home- coming Game. Last season the Vikings defeated Charles City 33-6 though both teams churned out about the same amount of total offense yardage. But Decorah made the big- ger plays, including a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and got production from their kick- ing game with a pair of field goals. Last season, Comet running back Trever Heitz rushed for 130 yards against the Vikings. Unfortunately for Charles City, Heitz — who is the Comets’ all-time leading rusher — was one of several key Comets who got injured in last week’s 56-0 loss to West Delaware. The game against Hawks, which was during WD’s Homecoming, was the first game back for the Comets after several positive COVID tests from their players forced the team to shut down for two weeks. Comets get back in win column Press Staff Report CRESCO — Last year, the Charles City Comets volleyball team ventured into the postsea- son with a losing record. The team then proceeded to “upset” several higher-seeded teams and was one match away from advancing to the State Vol- leyball Championships. The reason for the losing record as well as for the deep postseason run may have been the tough tournament slate the Comets annually sign up for which pits them against state- ranked teams in succession during a single day. This season has been much the same for Charles City. After starting the season 5-1, the Comets went on to play in high-caliber tournaments at Osage and Dike-New Hartford and got into a little funk as win- ning percentages go. If this again proves to be the crucible needed, that remains to be seen. But it’s still nice to get back into the win column, which the Comets did with a straight set victory over hosting Crestwood on Tuesday. Leading the Comets in the 25-19, 25-13, 25-23 victory was junior Kaylee Anderson (12 kills, 4 blocks), junior Ashlyn Hoeft (21 assists), senior Toni Maloy (14 digs) and senior Dani Stock (4 blocks). The Comets (7-8) are due to be tested again when they travel to Cedar Falls on Satur- day for yet another tournament featuring a bevy of state-ranked teams. The tournament will take place in the WRC Building just north of the UNI-Dome starting at 9 a.m. State XC meet split into two days To The Press Dates previously set for the 2020 IHSAA and IGHSAU cross country postseason will be split at next month’s meets to accommodate competition and crowds with COVID-19 related precautions. State qualifying meets and the state meet will now be sep- arated by classification and take place over two days. The state meet will remain in Fort Dodge at Lakeside Golf Course, where it has been run as a co-ed event since 1993. Class 4A and Class 3A will run their meets one day earlier than initially planned, with state qualifying now taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 21 and the state meet on Friday, Oct. 30. Class 2A and Class 1A will compete on the original- ly scheduled dates, with state qualifying on Thursday, Oct. 22 and the state meet on Saturday, Oct. 31. IGHSAU Executive Direc- tor Jean Berger said, “Our joint championship in Fort Dodge has long been a special event for our participants and fans. Changes to any successful championship are never easy, but holding a two-day meet is our best option this year. Our new plan really focuses on a safe and rewarding experience, something we all agree is our top priority.” The boards of the IHSAA and IGHSAU have approved the changes for 2020. The state meet will continue to be host- ed by Fort Dodge Community School District and Fort Dodge Parks and Recreation, at Lake- side Golf Course. IHSAA Executive Director Tom Keating said. “The IHSAA is grateful to the Fort Dodge community, particularly the Parks and Recreation Depart- ment and Lakeside Municipal Golf Course for their efforts to make a two-day State Co-Ed Cross Country event possible. By allowing us to run each class individually, the Fort Dodge community is contributing to our commitment to safety for participants, coaches, workers, media and spectators. This is another example of the out- standing support and partner- ship we enjoy with the city, the golf course and the wonderful volunteers who make this event special.” As an additional precaution- ary measure at state qualifying meets, Class 1A will go from five sites to eight sites. This will cut attendance at each 1A location by around 10 teams per gender. With this change, Class 1A will feature 16 state qualifying teams – the top two teams qual- ifying at each site, instead of the usual three – and 10 individu- al state meet qualifiers for each gender instead of the usual 15 individual state qualifiers. The IHSAA and IGHSAU anticipate this will be a one-time qualify- ing change. Class 2A, 3A, 4A will remain unchanged on qual- ifying teams and individuals for the 2020 State Cross Country Meet. State qualifying meet sites for all classes have been released and posted on each of the web- sites. Assignments for those meets will be released the week of Oct. 12. More details for the state meet will be released in early October. Parking will be available in- side Kennedy Park. Spectator tailgating will not be permit- ted. Admission for spectators will be $10 each upon arrival to Kennedy Park as the shuttle bus system utilized in 2019 will not be used at the 2020 event.
