According to health minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Bihar is only the second state in the country to launch this programme, for treating children at risk for parasitic worm infections, which is expected to bring about a significant improvement in the education and nutritional levels of children in the school going age of 6-14 years. The programme envisages mass distribution of deworming medicines to school going children across the state. The recently constituted inter-departmental State School Health Coordination Committee provides direction, support and necessary approvals for the programme. The Committee also plans to work in close collaboration with the National Filarial Control Programme and other development partners to ensure maximum positive impact on school-age children in the state, said Choubey. In Bihar, over 21 million children are of school going age and 18 million attend schools. Prevalence surveys were recently conducted in two districts of Bihar --Patna and Supaul -- by the SHSB, BEPC and DtW in collaboration with the Clinical Microbiology Division of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences which found high prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths, i.e. roundworm, hookworm and whipworm, amongst school-age children, even in the most developed district of the state. Initial modelling suggested that annual deworming will be required across the state. The programme, therefore, plans to cover children in all government and other schools. The programme will also attempt to reach school-age children not enrolled in schools owing to the high incidence of worms in this age group. When asked as to what prompted the state government to undertake the deworming programme, Choubey said thatglobal studies have shown that children infected with worms are 13 per cent less likely to be literate and earn 43 per cent less in jobs. malnourishment and impairment of mental and physical development. Children are the mostaffected by these infections. In the short-term, affected children are too tired and sick toconcentrate in school and often cannot attend school at all.

The health minister said that in the school-based model of deworming, the treatment isadministered by the school teachers who have been trained in advance by health workers. Thetreatment is simple and safe, a single dose of anthelmintics, albendazole or mebendazole, administered once or twice a year, depending on prevalence estimates.

According to DtW state-coordinator Rakesh Kumar, in a preliminary survey conducted in thetwo districts in June last year to identify prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths in Bihar itwas found to be in the range of 20-50 per cent which required mass deworming at least once ayear. Two phases of deworming has already been done on February 7 and March 7 this year inBihar schools. On April 7, mop-up phase will be completed, he added.
