Let’s start with a few givens.

The global energy system has to be transformed, and markets are responding.

The transition away from an energy supply system based largely on fossil fuels towards more sustainable energy sources is underway.

Renewable energy needs to be scaled up at least six times faster than is currently the case for the world to meet its agreed responsible emissions targets.

The sun provides more than enough energy to meet the whole world’s energy needs.

The environmental impact of solar power is significantly smaller than other power generation methods.

Solar is a clean energy source with no greenhouse gas emissions being released into the atmosphere. But a deeper dive into the story of solar power and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels also tells us that there are some limitations still to be overcome. Clearly, the main advantage of solar power is that it is a renewable, clean source of electricity. But it is also scalable, and this means that it can be deployed on either an industrial scale, or be used as a localised, domestic source of household energy. When it’s used in a small-scale way, the extra electricity generated can be stored in a battery or fed back into the electricity grid, and as the sun gives off far more energy than needed, the limitation is currently in the ability to convert it to electricity in a more cost-effective way.

But at a more technical level, a report by ACS Publications titled ‘The Importance of New ‘Sand-to-Silicon’ Processes for the Rapid Future Increase of Photovoltaics’ establishes a baseline at the end of 2019 of:

more than 0.5 terawatts of peak power being converted cumulatively by all photovoltaics installed on the planet – this the largest recorded value to that date, and;

that simultaneously, total global power consumption surpassed 18 terawatts, also being the largest ever value in history at that date.

How can we Bridge such a Big Gap?

The continued expansion of PVs, at an accelerated rate to sufficiently bridge this supply and demand gap, will be determined entirely by semiconductor materials suited for immediate mass production. In this context, ‘ideal’ semiconductors are those that satisfy the following four criteria.

1. Comprehensively understanding the chemistry, physics and metallurgy of the material to allow for efficient device construction.

2. Affording indefinite operations, requiring the material to be practically indestructible. 3. Presenting no immediate or potential health hazards in the area it is housed. 4. Requiring simple and minimal infrastructure impacts during its collection and manufacture to ensure no long-term

environmental consequences. Silica has been exhaustively studied since the advent of the modern semiconductor industry, and although many semiconductor compounds show promise in one or more of the stated criteria, crystalline silicon is arguably the only semiconductor to unambiguously satisfy at least three of these criteria – being Nos. 1-3. It is now up to the silica industry to work to improve the practices and processes required by criteria No.4, and ALLUP SILICA is committed to this.
