Presidents Monthly Message

Gerry Graf, President

Greetings from New York where I have been since April 23rd. Be back on May 26th. The summer season is here and the fishing should be great. I’m on the July 8-10 trip as an alternate and hope to be able to go. Please remember that you represent the club when you use the vendors who advertise in our directory. Some of them give our members a discount and some have been instrumental in working with our programs such as the help we got from Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle with our Anglers for Scouts program. Good will goes in both directions. The way they deal with us and we deal with them is a two-way street. I want to thank vice-president Peter Rohrich for filling in for me at the May general meeting. I know that the meeting went well. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to do any fishing while on vacation. It’s been pretty rainy with rough water for small craft. Had the weather been bet-ter, I might have tried for flounder or stripers. I hope to see many of you on future trips. Let’s try to fill them up early so

Jim doesn’t have to cancel any. It’s not good when the club has to cancel a con-

tract due to lack of participation.

Since the last Fish Tale issue we have completed two more charters. The April 22-24 and May 7-9 charters. So far all our charters have scored in fish! Our next charter is going out Monday June 10th for a 3.5 day charter. There may be one spot left by the time this newsletter gets out, so you may call me at 760-450-7060 to see if there is any room left. I’m positive this will be a charter filled with fun and fish! Only 16 Anglers aboard the Relentless. To see the full reports of our charter please see the web-site under Fish-n-News, look at the charter schedule and tap on where it says “VIEW REPORT”, and also you may check out some photos in the “GALLERY”. Our jack-pot winners on the last charters were April’s charter Vern Capistran and myself with 11 pound Lingcods then may’s charter was Brian Kane with a 20 pound Yellowtail. Congratulations to the jack-pot winners and a Thank you to Charter Masters Marshall Goddard and Peter Rohrich. On our last charter I want to Thank Edd Robinson for donating his paid spot to an Active Du-ty Marine, we had PFC Schultz join us on this charter. Also thanks to Peter Rohrich, Ray Klotz, Jim Imbiorski, Mike McIntire, Paul Addison along with myself who all donated the funds to cover this Marines cost from fishing License, Jack-pot, galley tab, fish cleaning, tip, parking and fuel for his vehicle. The Chris McCann even bought the young Marine a hat. We are looking pretty good so far with our charters, with the exception of our ¾ day charters. So help get these charters filled. Even if a charter shows full, get your name in there as an alternate, there usually is an Angler that signed up early and can’t make the trip. Using alternates helps our members when they can’t make a trip. Please remember that all charters through the end of October are now open to friends and family, guest must be at least 18 years of age, except the August 1st charter. You may check out the Charter Schedule on the web-site and see how many opening’s there are and contact that Charter Master and get on the charter. If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns please feel free to call me anytime at 760-450-7060. Hope to see many more of you out on our charters.

Conservation

Wayne Kotow, Conservation

The next Fish & Game Commission Meeting is June 12-13 in Redding. The next Pacific Fisheries Management Council meeting is June 19-25 at the Double-Tree in Mission Valley. Drift gill net, shallow set longlines, deep set buoy gear, groundfish, sardines, etc. are all topics to be discussed. On May 8th , Bill Shedd, Chairman of CCA CAL testified before the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife in Washington DC. on the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act. California legislators banned drift gillnets in state waters last year but are still legal in federal waters off the California coast. The Drift Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act would extend the state’s protections to federal waters within five years. Fishermen would receive assistance from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to transition away from the mile-long mesh drift gillnets and toward something more sustainable. “Recent data indicate that overall only 40 percent of the catch is kept using this method. The remaining catch, which includes sportfish, and other marine life, is re-turned to the ocean, much of which is already dead,” ASA staff said. Large mesh driftnets, which are more than a mile long, are left in the ocean overnight to catch swordfish and thresher sharks. However, at least 60 other marine species, including whales, dolphins, sea lions, sea turtles, fish and sharks, can also become entangled in the large mesh nets, injuring or killing them. Most of these animals, re-ferred to as bycatch, are then discarded. “The California state legislature moved [in 2018] to address this fishery and make similar changes to how the fishery operates. Federal action is needed to close the loop on this wasteful fishing method because the fishery is jointly managed by both federal and state agencies,” ASA staff said.

June Guest Speaker

Our speaker for June will be Rudy A. Rivera, the Operating Director from Nine’s Optics, in Ontario. Rudy will be talking about polarized eyeglasses combined with a bifocal magnifier. This is a very useful tool for summer fishing in bright light. Many of us are having trouble seeing smaller things, knots and line and eyes on hooks, and Rudy’s product solves this problem. Come to our June meeting and hear about a great concept at a reasonable price.

This July 4th, the United States will celebrate the 243rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The city of Oceanside will have its’ annual Independence Day Parade and Celebration on June 29th. Our club will, once again, participate in this parade. Please contact Lynn Howell or Dave Miller and be a part of this great event. As always, a very good time will be had by all.

“He who permits himself to tell a lie once finds it easier to do it the second time.”

Thomas Jefferson (presumably talking about those that fish.)

Anglers-4-Scouts

We want to thank Walt at Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle for his generous discount on our 13 new Penn Fierce II 4000 saltwater reels for Boy Scout Camp Fiesta Is-land in Mission Bay. These will now fully replace the old non-saltwater reels from three years ago, bring us to a total of 24 rods and reels for over 2,000 scouts from around the Southwest to use for their summer camp. Thanks to Pure Fishing/Penn Reels for a donation of a couple of reels. Walt’s price to the club came in way under our budgeted expense, saving the program money to use elsewhere. The camp received the rehabilitated rods and reels, thanks to Hal Reeser, on May 25th. We met the fishing merit badge staff, gave a few tips, as they get ready for camp, which starts on June 1st.

Would you like to go pout fishing for free on a ½ day boat? Helping the scouts. Op-portunities to serve as deckhands, just like on our Anglers 4 Kids Program. Looking for two or three volunteers every Wednesday, through August 7th, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., out of the Point Loma Landing. Family members welcomed to join. Our 13 old non-saltwater reels used for last three years at Camp Fiesta Island have been donated to the Mammoth Lakes Kids Fishing Festival. Last year they had 150 kids trying to use 30 rods – a welcomed donation. Their organization will rehab and re-spool. Looking for up to four freshwater anglers to go up to Boy Scout Mataguay Scout Ranch in Warner Springs to set up and hand off the new cache of 25 rods and reels donated through the club by CCA – California’s Wayne Kotow. After setting up the rods, we’ve been invited to fish their freshly stocked pond. Monday, June 10th, will leave Senior Center at 8:00 a.m., returning after a nice lunch in Julian. Sign ups at June meeting.

During the Tuesday May 7th. monthly members meeting, I provided a listing and date request sheets for members that may wish to sign up for our July & Au-gust Anglers 4 Kids fishing trips. Unfortunately, the information was not presented to the membership until after the 2nd half break period. By that time many of the mem-bers departed and did not have the opportunity to sign up. To provide a opportunity for members that wish to consider going, I will be available at the June meeting to enter your names for consideration. Usually, we provide up to 6 to 8 members de-pending on how many Kids & their Supervisors we accommodate. Our maximum boarding limit is 30 Kid’s & 10 Adults, so we have to prioritize accordingly. The seven (7) trip dates are all scheduled during the 5 Tuesdays in July 2nd.- July 9th.-July 16th.-July 23rd.- July 30th. on the Sea Star and the final 2 trips will be on Tuesdays August 13th. & August 20th. on the Chubasco II, located at the Oceanside harbor and provided by the Oceanside Sea Center. Sea Star Capt. Joe Cacciola and Capt. Ernie Prieto- Chubasco II. The Members participating on these trips must all pass Background checks for trip participation that was recently voted and approved by our Oceanside Senior Board Member Officers and O.S.A. Foundation Officers prior to departure. Cost is $5.00 for each Background Checks and will be very strongly protected for personal priva-cy. If you have any concerns regarding this requirement, please express your con-cern with our O.S.A President Gerry Graf and/or O.S.A. Foundation President Jeff Routsong for additional information and purpose. John & I look forward to another successful summer Anglers 4 Kid’s fishing program and very much appreciate the continued support provided by our membership, in-cluding financial supporters and North County Kid’s organizations.

A very big & special thank you goes out to Don Smedley’s son & daughter in-law, Daniel & Angel Smedley. They donated $2,500 to cover the full cost for one of our Angler 4 Military charters this year, our September 30th charter. There are three more trips yet to complete this year and room for a few more volun-teers on the August 14th September 11th charters.
