December Vestnik Project

The December Vestnik Project is about Wilber and Orval Wright. Talk to your youth about how important their first flight was to the space program. Have youth make planes and helicopters using wafer cookies. Through Pinterest I found making airplanes out of cookies at https://eatmovemake.com/wafer-cookie-airplanes-wafer-cookie-helicopters/.

Why do we have daylight savings?

The first Daylight Saving Time policy began in Germany onMay 1, 1916, in the hopes that it would save energy during WorldWar I, according to Michael Downing, author of Spring Forward:The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time.

William Willett published in 1907 The Waste of Daylight.Willett was inspired by an early-morning epiphany that “the sunshines upon the land for several hours each day while we areasleep” and yet there “remains only a brief spell of declining day-light in which to spend the short period of leisure at our disposal.”Though he did mention that it would save money to reduce theuse of artificial lighting, his main purpose was the increase enjoy-ment of sunlight.

Across the pond, the first U.S. law on Daylight Saving Timewent into effect on March 19, 1918, for the same fuel saving rea-sons, about a year after the country entered the war. But again, though the official reason was fuel saving, the U.S. Chamber ofCommerce was the major backer for the policy, Downing argues, because Americans getting off work while it was still light outmeant they would be more likely to go out shopping in theevening.

SPJST November Vestnik Project - Daylight Savings TimeThis project earns a maximum 1 point in the SPJST Youth Clubs Merit Points System. Mail completed project no later than December 15, 2018 to:

State Fraternal Director.

✯ Guides youth in preparing for District and State YAD (craft, talent, royalty, scrapbook, poster, beseda).
