The Bosch Automotive Story

Thebeginningswerehumble.In1898RobertBoschdevelopedamagnetoignitiondeviceandadaptedittosuitavehicleengine.Indoingthishedevelopedthefirstreliableignitionsystem,solvingoneofthegreatesttechnicalproblemsfacedbytheautomotiveindustryatthattime.ThiskeyinnovationwasthefirstchapterinthesuccessstoryofBoschasanautomotivesupplier.
From1902Boschdevelopedahighvoltagemagnetoignitionsystemincorporatingsparkplugs.Whilethemagnetoignitionhaslongsincebeenreplacedbybatteryignitionsystems,Boschtodaymanufacturesmorethan300millionsparkplugsperyear,usingtheverylatestpreciousmetaltechnology.
Ascarsbecameaproductforthemasses,Boschrecognisedtheprospectsfordevelopingmotorvehiclelighting.ResearchinthisarearesultedinthelaunchoftheBoschautomotivelightingsystem,comprisingofheadlights,agenerator,aregulatorandabattery.ThiswasasignificantmilestoneforbothBoschandtheindustry,beingthefirstall-in-onesystemavailabletoconsumers,andalsothebasisforcomponentssuchasstarters,horns,windshieldwipers,indicatorsandcarheatingsystemstobedevelopedandaddedtothebusiness.
Fromabout1920,thegrowthofdieselenginesintruckswasaconcernatBosch,becausedieselenginesdidnotneedanignitionsystem,thecompany’smainsalesdriver.Tocapitaliseonthistechnologicaladvance,Boschbegandevelopingdieselinjectionpumpsandin1936launchedthefirstdieselinjectionpumpforpassengercars.Today,Boschisthegloballeaderindieseltechnology,whetheritbeforpassengercars,trucksorinjectionsystemsforships.
Intheyearsthatfollowed,Boschmadenumerousdevelopmentswithotherautomotiveproducts.Gasolineinjectionsystemsweredevelopedfrom1935andby1967hadallbutdisplacedthe
