ACADEMICSCOURSE PLANNINGReady to get right to the heart of your Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree? The first step is to have a solid foundation in the business theories and principles that ground the program. All incoming SFU Beedie students begin their first term with the Business Foundation Program (BFP), which includes the Business Career Passport workshops and BUS 201-3: Introduction to Business.

You can tailor coursework to your interests and goals, but there are some required courses needed to complete the components of your degree—lower-division courses, WQB courses, non-BUS/non-BUEC courses, and upper-division courses which include those within your concentration.

COURSE PLANNING WORKSHOPSChoosing your courses shouldn’t be stressful. That’s why we’re here to help. Course planning workshops assist newly admitted high school students with course planning for the Fall 2018 term. Register for a scheduled course planning workshop at http://at.sfu.ca/HRhJpY and get a handle on all the necessary courses, prerequisites, and units needed to move through the program and graduate.

SAMPLE COURSE PLANCourse planning information is available on the SFU Beedie website at beedie.sfu.ca/dashboard/academics/courses/planner. You’ll find a sample course plan that includes four courses in the first term—three lower division requirements and the option to complete an elective toward the non-BUS/non-BUEC requirements. Always meet with an Academic Advisor before course planning and enrollment.

ELECTIVESElective courses allow you to enrich your business studies with courses that complement your interests and career goals. They are also a means to broaden your thinking and explore the ways in which business intersects with other disciplines. In some cases, elective courses may also be counted towards the “breadth” portion of SFU’s Writing, Quantitative & Breadth (WQB) requirements, so consult with an Academic Advisor to plan accordingly.

COURSE OUTLINE REVIEWDifferent professors often teach the same course in different ways, with varying expectations. Always analyze what a particular class has to offer and review course outlines on the SFU website at sfu.ca/outlines. Ask yourself whether a course speaks to your strengths and interests. Evaluate the commitment involved such as number of assignments and exams, cost of materials, project requirements, etc. to determine how it will fit in with your overall workload and personality. SFU Beedie course outlines are available at beedie.sfu.ca/dashboard/academics/courses/info.

1 UNIT X 2-3hrs

PER WEEK

10 - SFU Beedie Starter Guide

Don’t feel like you need to navigate this process on your own. Connect with an advisor early on to address questions and concerns.

Course planning tip: To avoid a rocky first term, stick with three (or four) courses and don’t worry about declaring a concentration right away. Take the time during your first term to explore your interests and discover what your passions are. After taking a few business courses, you may be surprised at how many avenues are open to you!

Study tip: Successful students dedicate 2-3 hours per unit, per week to study outside of class (4 hours/unit/week for Math courses) right from week 1. This includes time spent on anything you work on in the course (e.g., reading, reviewing, preparing for an exam, working on an assignment, writing a paper, etc.), but does NOT include time spent in lectures, tutorials, or labs.

For example, a 3 unit course requires 6-9 hours of study + 3 hours of class = 9-12 hours per week.

A course-load of 4 x 3-unit (non-Math) courses means you should dedicate a full 36-48 hours per week - nearly as much as or more than a full-time job!

Try to study in shorter 1-2 hour blocks (taking a 5 minute break every half hour or 10 minutes every hour) as you’ll be able to focus better, remember more of what you’ve learned, and be less likely to procrastinate!

BUSINESS CAREER PASSPORTTo prepare for your future career you’ll enroll in the mandatory Business Career Passport program — six workshops designed to help you hone your interests, sharpen your focus, and see what it takes to catch the attention of employers. You will also learn how companies hire their candidates, how to craft resumes and cover letters that present your unique experiences,

and what it takes to interview and network like a pro. Connect with the Career Management Centre to find out more: beedie.sfu.ca/dashboard/career/careerpassport.
