The Goals of Aim North

Aim North has one goal in mind: to see students graduate from college.

We believe that one way to do this is by building a strong support system within a student’s existing community and gaining the confidence to succeed at college by starting early, in a supportive and familiar environment.

Students can then rely on their team peers as they begin their college experience at Northern Michigan University.* In other words, students will be able to take their community with them to not only ease the transition to college life but enthusiastically embrace it.

How Does it Work?

Detroit-area students who are graduating from high school this spring and hope to attend college will take two college courses at César Chávez Academy High School June 24- August 1, Monday-Friday, 8 am - noon.

The courses are offered through Northern Michigan University in Detroit. Aim North will pay the registration fee for students to participate in summer orientation at NMU where students register for Fall 2019 courses and access additional resources. Upon successful completion of the courses, students will earn 8 college credits!

See the steps on the back cover of this brochure for more details...

* Students in Aim North are not required to attend NMU. However, they should check with their intended college regarding transfer of credits.

The Courses & Costs

EN 111 COLLEGE COMPOSITION This course develops students’ abilities to write, read, and discuss paragraphs and short essays about significant subjects.

NAS 101 ANISHINAABE LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND COMMUNITYAn introduction to Anishinaabe language including grammar, vocabulary, idioms and syllabics. Students will learn to read, write and speak basic Anishinaabemowin. This course also promotes the preservation of Anishinaabe culture by examining various facets of Anishinaabe everyday life and contemporary issues.

Many students are eligible to use FAFSA dollars to pay for tuition. Once you have filled out the current FAFSA you will go back and submit the 2018–2019 FASFA to potentially access funds for summer school credits. We can support you in this process.

A Northern Story

“We had a college fair [at my high school] and, right from the beginning, I felt a connection to Northern. I think the best part of the Aim North program was the ability to collaborate and debate in a respectable manner. I also feel that the Aim North program increased my academic skills and made me feel more confident that I could be successful in college.”
