Hacking Toward Deeper Learning: Start with a Snorkel
SCHOOL RETOOL ISa professional development fellowship that helps school leaders redesign school culture using small, scrappy experiments called “hacks.”
who we are
you can uniquely design these
ACADEMIC OR LEARNING MINDSET“I belong here because I am a learner. Challenge, struggle, and failure are all part of learning.”
COLLABORATION“I can work and learn with my peers in ways that help us all grow and meet our goals.”
CRITICAL THINKING“I apply knowledge, skills, and tools in different ways to identify and solve a variety of problems.”
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION“By listening to and understanding others, I can express and understand myself.”
SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING“I know when I’m learning—I set goals, reflect on my progress, and look for help when I need it.”
MASTERY OF ACADEMIC CONTENT“I am applying these skills to meaningful, challenging school work and real-world problems.”

6 STUDENT OUTCOMES OF DEEPER LEARNING
Cognitive: Working with knowledge
Interpersonal: Working with others
Intrapersonal: Working with your mind
THE SCHOOL RETOOL CHANGE PROCESS
We’ll start with your aspirations for Deeper Learning.
“Prepare students for success in college and career”
“Develop student agency to expand life opportunities”
“Increase student voice in the learning experience”
And get specific about what behaviors you hope to see.
“Student voice increases in and out of class.”
“Adults take student ideas seriously.”
“Students share their work proudly.”
You won’t be starting from scratch. We’ll take inspiration from Deeper Learning schools.
a
Big Ideas from Deeper Learning
Then, it will be time to HACK. We’ll use the levers to break down those Big Ideas into bite sized, designable pieces.
→ Have lunch with a student
→ Bring a student to a staff meeting
→ “Speak your mind” meeting with the principal
And observe how these hacks…
And observe how these hacks change behaviors.
HACKING TOWARD RELEVANCE AND PURPOSE
Aspiration: Every student will be excited,
inspired, and invested in learning
Desired Behaviors: - Kids excited during end of day debriefs- “That look in their eyes” when talking about learning- Students make work public
Big Idea:Portfolios
Hacks:Daily interest photobooth; Cross-class interest projects
Uncommon Measures - teacher texts about interesting student work- student emails about classwork
a
• Aspiration: Every student will be excited/inspired by something they are learning
• Big Idea: Portfolios• Hack: Every day, students take a photo
expressing one thing in school they are excited about
• Led to: Teachers built on it by implementing projects that combine two of these passions (mythology and Morse code; basketball and data; robotics)
• Uncommon measure: positive texts and videos from teachers
“I was really seeing the students having a lot more investment in their learning, and that’s what I want to see for kids.”
