Reading Passage (BLM 9)
A Weekend of Rain By Juan Smith, News Writer
The people of Rockville were mopping
up this morning after a weekend of
strong storms. The town received fifteen
inches of rain on Saturday and six
inches on Sunday.
“Water is dripping through our
roof,” said Elmer Pickle, who owns the
hardware store on Main Street. “We’re
standing in a foot of water inside the
store. It will take us many hours to clean
up, so we’re shutting our store until
tomorrow.”
Six other shops on Main Street
will also be closed today. “We have no
electricity,” said Katie Katz, who runs
the bookstore. “We’ve been asking for
help from the power company since
yesterday. I think we’ll be getting our
power back this afternoon.”
Sam Li, president of the Rockville
Power Company, said that more than
five hundred homes and stores lost
power during the weekend. “The storms
knocked trees and branches over onto
power lines, which caused people to
lose their electricity. The power company
is working hard to repair the lines, he
said. “You’ll not find us resting until
everyone in Rockville has electricity
again.”
Isabel Garcia, Rockville police chief,
said that local roads had to be closed
because they were covered by water. “All
roads are now open again,” she said.
Schools were also open today, as
usual. Bus drivers said they had no
trouble picking up students. “We are
very careful,” said Archie Jones, who is
in charge of the buses. “The roads are
fine this morning, and our buses are
running on time.”
