2016 was a great year for job creation by Enterprise Ireland backed companies, with collective employment breaking 200,000 for the first time. It was also a great year for Start-Ups.

– 101 new High Potential Start up approvals (HPSUs)

– 128 New Competitive Start Fund approvals (CSFs)

A key focus for Enterprise Ireland over the past number of years has been on targeting under-represented sources of start-ups, particularly start-ups from third level research and start-ups led by ambitious women. 2016 was an excellent year for female entrepreneurship:

– 19 new HPSUs investment approvals led by women (19%)

– 44 new CSF investment approvals in female-led businesses (34%)

In total we approved 63 investments in female-led start-ups, or 28%. A great result considering only 8% of HPSUs were female led in 2012.

2016 was also a record year for start-ups from third level research with 15 spin-outs from third level institutes - the highest level ever achieved in a single year.

An interesting and welcome achievement of 2016 was the number of new start-ups that emerged from the Fintech sector. During 2016 we invested in seven new Fintech HPSUs and a further 10 Fintech start-ups were supported under a dedicated CSF fund. We continue to work as part of the Government’s IFS 2020 Strategy to optimise on opportunities for Ireland in the Financial Services sector.

Of the total number of start-ups supported during 2016, we were particularly pleased to see that over half (53%) were in regions outside of Dublin. The development of companies of scale throughout the country is a key priority for Enterprise Ireland and start-up success is central to the achievement of this.

This impressive out-turn for 2016 is a testament to the entrepreneurs and founders that have taken a leap of faith to establish new businesses,

and in the process, are creating employment in towns and villages all over Ireland. The Enterprise Ireland start-up team has helped to deliver this success, acting as a sounding board for entrepreneurs with new business ideas, providing sign-posting for concepts that might require further development, and of course, assisting with much needed funding to help get the business started. We have worked with stakeholders across the start-up eco-system, most notably our colleagues in Local Enterprise Offices, to provide entrepreneurship support.

The British referendum decision to leave the European Union is an extra challenge for export focussed start-ups and early stage companies, as the UK is most often the first export market. Our plan is to support and inspire entrepreneurs and founders to have global ambition, to expand their reach into global markets beyond the UK. This is a key pillar of our new Enterprise Ireland strategy ‘Build Scale, Expand Reach’ 2017-2020.

We will lead a national drive to encourage and support more start-

ups, working with partners and stakeholders across the enterprise support infrastructure, to help Irish early stage businesses to achieve scale in global markets. Innovation will be a key differentiator in achieving competitive advantage in global markets. We have many examples of Irish companies, competing and winning against global competition, through innovation. Many of these companies started their journey here at the Start-up Showcase event - companies like Voxpro, VistaMed and CoreHR, all of which announced major job expansions in 2016.
