Early HistoryIn 1877 Thomas Edison invented the 1st hand-cranked phonograph. Now that’s a little bit too far back, so let’s jump ahead 115 years.According to Denon Electronics, their DN-2000F was the first dual rack mount CD player built especially for DJ’s.2 years later, Pioneer released the CDJ-500E. This was the first tabletop CD player geared toward the DJ market.In 1998, the industry took a huge step. Tascam introduced the CD302, which was the first CD player with real time scratch effects.DigitalScratch.com states that in 1999,Gerald Webb was named the 1st digital turntablist in the world for his contributions to the field.

Current State of IndustryIn 2000, Numark introduced the CDN-88. This was the most responsive and true sounding vinyl emulator at the time.In 2001, Pioneer shocked the world of music with the CDJ-1000.

This tabletop CD player featured the 1st touch sensitive platter that truly resembled a turntable.The CDJ-1000 also was used in the DMC championships that year. ScratchDJ.com reported that this was the first ever entrance for a non-turntable product into the competition.

In 2003, Denon Electronics introduced the DN-S5000 tabletop CD player.

This CD player has one of the most sensitive platters, allowing for accurate scratching. 1st CD player with upgrade software available via the web.
