Enthusiasm and commitment is more important than artistic ability and we invite all students at St Peter’s. This is an ideal opportunity for CAS students to fulfil their Creativity and Service requirements as participants or in a leading role. To protect uniforms, an official Rocket club lab coat is available for an extra $60.
Student Librarians: Students from Year 7 - 13 who are interested in books, information and technology have the opportunity to apply to be a member of the Student Librarian Team. Students help in the Library & Information Centre at either interval, lunch time or after school. They are part of an enthusiastic student team led by the Library Prefect assisting with the issuing, returning and shelving of resources, connecting students devices to the school network and general information queries.
The Writers Guild: The Writers’ Guild meets one lunchtime per week on a day that is arranged in consultation with group members. This group is for students in Year 11 - 13 who have an interest in writing for their own enjoyment with the aim to publish completed works. Students write and share their prepared work with other group members to learn how to offer and receive constructive critique.
Students are encouraged to enter writing competitions throughout the year. When the opportunity is available, we host visiting New Zealand writers who run workshops for the Guild. We are also considering attending the Auckland Writers Festival Schools’ Programme.

THE BROAD AIMS OF THE INSTRUMENTAL TUITION PROGRAMMEThe aim of the tuition programme is the development of students’ musical, social and personal awareness through participation in instrumental music instruction and ensembles, rehearsal and performance.
It is not seen as an end in itself but rather as something which will add significantly to the quality of life both now at school and later in life. Students will be encouraged to participate in a wide variety of musical ensembles and musical activities, allowing them to experience the joys of music making and to stimulate their interest in music.
Students are required to: 1. Attend their weekly lesson 2. Practice regularly 3. Show continual improvement
LESSON INFORMATION AND CONDITIONS OF TUITIONStudents joining the programme receive one lesson per week with a specialist tutor of the student’s chosen instrument. Students wishing to have lessons may do so by completing the request for instrumental tuition form. Lessons are for 30 minutes. Lesson times will change each week on a rotational timetable so that students do not miss the same school lesson each week. Students are expected to attend all lessons and bring all tutor books, ensemble music and instruments etc. to each lesson.
If a student is unable to attend his/her instrumental lesson, for any genuine reason such as a test or a very important lesson, he/she must advise his/her teacher or the Performing Arts Administrator. In most cases, if we have prior notice, an alternative lesson time can be arranged. However, if the student does not notify us in advance, or simply forgets to come to the lesson, that lesson will be charged to the student account. When a student is absent on excursions, camps etc., we will endeavour to make up this lesson at another time, providing we are given prior notice by the student or his/her parents.
If a student is absent from his/her lesson two weeks in a row without notification then the parent/caregiver will be contacted directly by the tutor.
TERMINATION OF LESSONSShould parents decide to withdraw their child from music performance lessons we require that written confirmation by the parents be sent to the Performing Arts Administrator. As tutors are employed on a termly basis, cessation of lessons during the term is not permitted. Three weeks’ notice prior to the end of term is required. NB: If a student does discontinue lessons during the term, the full terms fees are still payable.
LESSON FEESStudents involved in St Peter’s Instrumental Tuition Programme will be invoiced through the School Finance Office for lessons. Fees are between $30-$35 per lesson. N.B. Some tutors are GST registered and as a result there may be an additional cost to your weekly lesson fee. The number of lessons will depend on the length of school term but there will generally be eight per term.
THE BROAD AIMS FOR THE EXTRA-CURRICULAR DANCE PROGRAMMEOur objective towards the extra-curricular dance programme is not only for entertainment, social, and enjoyment purposes, but most important, to gain and improve skills. It reflects the talent, enthusiasm and teamwork of students of all ages. Each programme provides opportunities to develop skills in creativity and performance at various events run by the school.
Students are required to: 1. Attend their weekly lesson 2. Practice regularly 3. Show continual improvement.
LESSON INFORMATION AND CONDITIONS OF TUITIONStudents joining the programme receive one lesson per week with a specialist tutor. Sign-ups for each Dance Group will occur at the beginning of Term One. Lessons are for 60 - 75 minutes. Lesson times will be static each week, either before school, after school, or during a lunch time. Students are expected to attend all lessons.
If a student is unable to attend his/her dance lesson, for any genuine reason such as a test or illness, he/she must advise his/her teacher or manager of their dance troupe.

SCHOOL RULESIt is important that students have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and the behaviours that are acceptable at school.
The Student Code of Conduct, Pastoral Care Network diagram, and an Anti-Bullying poster are displayed in all classrooms and houses. These are referred to regularly and are often topics of discussion in our varied learning environments.
Students who choose inappropriate behaviour understand that there is a school-wide step/referral system in place. This system, and consequences involved, are regularly and clearly communicated to students.
Importantly, at St Peter’s we reward students for following school rules and acting responsibly across all spheres of their education – informally and formally, inside and outside the classroom.
GENERAL INFORMATION School rules are often no more than common sense. There are some rules, however, which need to be clearly stated and understood to help the school community to run smoothly and safely, and others which govern our relationships with the communities of the local area and which exemplify the school’s values.
When travelling by public transport, students should appreciate that by their conduct on such occasions, the whole school is judged. A high standard of behaviour must therefore be maintained. The same rule applies to sports teams or other official school groups travelling together.
ALCOHOLNo alcohol may be served to students at any time. No student is to be given alcohol at any school function or occasion.
No student is to consume alcohol.
We strongly recommend that no parties are held on weekends during term time. We will not grant leave specifically requested for students to attend parties during the week. Parties for senior students are better held on leave weekends or during term breaks.
DETENTION SYSTEMAFTER SCHOOL / IN-HOUSE DETENTION Members of staff may give detentions. Truancy/consistent lateness run daily from 3:30-4:15pm, with the Student Supervisor.
House Prefects/House Staff may give house detentions.
For minor breaches of discipline, classroom teachers should manage and discipline appropriately.
If a student continues to offend they will move to the referral system i.e.:
Academic: Teacher Head of Faculty Dean Senior Leadership Principal.
Behavioural: Prefect/Teacher House Director Senior Leadership Principal
3 HOUR DETENTION
• This detention can be served during the week or on a Saturday morning.• Serious inappropriate behaviours.• Members of the Senior Leadership Team administer.• Communication is made with parents with every 3 hour detention issued.
This could involve a student being removed from classes and working under supervision, or serving a Saturday detention - on a case-by-case basis. A Saturday detention involves a student working around the school, under supervision. This punishment may be incurred by misdemeanours such as:
• Intimidation/bullying• Being out of bounds• Theft• Girl entering boys’ ablutions and vice-versa• Disruptive behaviour• Anti-social behaviour• Smoking.

SUSPENSION/STAND DOWN
A suspension/stand down involves a student being removed from the school for up to one week or more as required. A meeting with the Principal, student and parents/caregivers will be arranged to determine the path forward.
A suspension/stand down is likely to be issued for offences such as:
• Bringing alcohol into school or returning to school under the influence of alcohol• Consuming alcohol on school grounds or whilst under the control of the school (i.e. on a school trip)• Drug use• Solvent abuse• Serious theft• Serious intimidation/bullying• Serious anti-social/disruptive behaviour.
Suspension/stand down may be issued where the school feels that some time at home may be of benefit to the student and the school.
EXPULSION
Expulsion involves a student being sent from the school permanently. Expulsion may occur for offences such as:
• Serious offences of a sexual nature• Bringing drugs into the school/using drugs within school grounds or off site when under the care of the school,
or on school activities• Very serious intimidation/bullying• Continued inappropriate behaviour.
CONCLUSION
• Remember to show consideration and tolerance to all members of the school community and to treat others as you expect to be treated.
WIPING THE SLATE CLEAN
At the Principal’s discretion, a student may have his or her record wiped clean after a suspension, if no serious re-offending occurs during the 12 months following his or her return to school. For this to occur, the student’s behaviour and performance must be beyond question.
ATTENDANCE • Day students who are absent for any reason must ensure that the School Office is contacted by a parent or
caregiver before school opens. An online system through the Community Portal will be introuduced in 2017 for all leave required.
• Boarders who are ill report to the House Matron, who will refer to the School Nurse. The names of these students will be given to the School Office by 8.15am each morning.
• Students who wish to miss a lesson for any reason must first seek the permission of the teacher who would be teaching them.
• Students arriving late to school must sign in at the Student Reception when they arrive at school. They will be expected to have a note from a parent or an appointment card, or the parent may have made prior communication to notify the school.
• Students needing to leave school during the day, e.g. for an appointment, must go to the Student Reception for a leave pass. They will need to sign out and show their appointment card, or have a note to say where they are going or a prior communication must have been received from a parent.
• Absence longer than a half day for all students for any reason other than illness (Special Leave) requires prior permission from the Principal by way of written notification at least two days prior to leave being taken. The School holds the view that a student is expected and required to be at school in listed term times. Parents are asked to co-operate with this requirement and time their holidays and other such commitments so as not to create any conflict between family and school.
• Where the School Calendar indicates: ‘Compulsory attendance for all students’ day students are required to attend.
• Unauthorised absence will receive consequences.• Sunday evening chapel is compulsory for all boarding students as calendared (three per term on average).• Students must fulfil all their school commitments before leaving for holidays.
• The official Clearance Form must be completed before students are removed from the school roll. Written

BANNED ITEMS Smoking, drug-taking and the possession of smoking materials, drugs or solvents are forbidden. Boarders may not possess any form of medical prescription without the knowledge and supervision of the House Matron.
• Students may not hold personal medication.• Students may not possess alcoholic liquor. If a student during term time returns to school under the influence
of alcohol, he or she will be handled in the same way as if he or she had brought alcohol onto the school premises or consumed it there. Students are forbidden to possess, buy or consume alcohol on any school trip or outing.
• Students may not possess guns or ammunition, any form of explosives, fireworks, or anything which could be construed as an offensive weapon (e.g. most forms of knives - especially flick knives, catapults and bows).
• Reading or visual material which is pornographic or inappropriate may not be brought to the school or distributed to other students.
• Graffiti on any items at school is prohibited.• Students are prohibited from bringing chewing gum to school.
DINING HALL • Students must present themselves for meals at the appropriate times looking neat and tidy. They should at
all times be aware of good table manners and be attentive to the needs of their table companions. They must treat the catering staff politely. Students may not take food or dining room property out of the Dining Hall unless eating in the Quad or accessing the takeaway service.
• Food should be consumed in the Dining Hall, or at school picnic tables.• Students are not permitted to consume food in a classroom without a teacher’s permission.
HAIR
• All students must have haircuts suitable for school activities – i.e. off the collar and face for boys. Hair should not by dyed or worn in a style which brings undue attention. • Girls’ hair is to be tied back off the face. Hair ties are to be only navy, red or black.
LITTER A tidy and pleasant environment is part of a student’s social training, so every boy and girl is expected to keep classrooms, other school areas and school grounds tidy and free from litter. Any students displaying a casual attitude to this responsibility will incur sanctions.
MOBILE PHONES/PORTABLE DEVICES The following policy guidelines are intended for the security of individual students’ property and to ensure uninterrupted academic and study time.
Inappropriate phone use, e.g. text bullying, will be covered by school rules.
Students who use their phone inappropriately during class time, evening prep, study or after lights out will have the privilege removed or the student disciplined in the following ways:
• During academic class time - handled at the teacher’s discretion.• Boarders - handled at the discretion of House Staff. On-going, repetitive issues may see the phone held by House Staff, with limited use for a period of time.
RELATIONSHIPS • Personal relationships are one particularly significant area in which values are expressed. Wide friendships
rather than exclusive relationships are recommended.• Anyone found engaging in any form of sexual intercourse must expect to be removed. No physical contact is
the expectation.• There is no place at St Peter’s for any kind of bullying or cruelty.• Lying and stealing will not be tolerated. Borrowing someone’s property without asking is theft.• Students should be polite, considerate and helpful at all times to staff, fellow students, guests and visitors.• When meeting teachers or guests in hallways, staircases, and around school, students should always be
careful to give way when necessary and to open doors, etc., for others. When passing members of staff or guests, it is common politeness to greet them.
• Students are expected to use appropriate titles at all times when speaking to adults.

vehicle for which permission was initially granted.
Students who travel on leave with other students (day students or boarders) must do so with the written consent of both parents and in accordance with the law of the land.

BOARDING HOUSE REGULATIONS • House rules are displayed in all houses. Maps of the campus defining common areas of meeting and areas
that are out of bounds are published and displayed in all houses.• Boys are not permitted to visit the girls’ boarding houses during the school day, and vice versa. If visiting
during the weekend, permission must be obtained from the House Director of that particular house.• Under no circumstances may a girl enter a boy’s dormitory or visit his cubicle. Clear boundaries are set during
the week as follows; Girls at Boys Houses: Girls are not to go above the embankment to Riddet, Oliphant and Broadhurst Houses or beyond the bollards to Morris House during the week. Boys are not to go beyond the Business and Entrepreneurial Centre except to go to the Dining Hall or Shop. The grassed area between Business and Entrepreneurial Centre and the Dining Hall is an access way only to and from the Dining Hall.
• Visitors, including day students, may visit only with the permission of house staff and outside visitors must leave by 5.00pm. Visitors may not sit in cars outside the houses. In general, students may not leave the house area after dark or 6.30pm without permission from house staff.
• Students may not keep or use candles, fuel or matches in the house. Students may not make alterations, adaptations or additions to the lighting or heating arrangements and furnishings or fittings, or keep or use electric fittings without permission from the House Director.
• Electric blankets/heaters may not be used in the boarding houses.
LEAVE • Students must not expect to be released early from school functions or sporting events on leave weekends.• No student is to go on leave with another family or person unless permission has been given in writing by his
or her parent or guardian, or communication followed up with a letter of approval.• Correct uniform must be worn by students on town leave.• Special weekend leave privileges may be granted to all students at the discretion of the House Director.• Leave requests are to be in writing or as requested by the house staff. This will be an online system in 2017.• Students who travel on leave with other students (day students or boarders) must do so with the written
consent of both parents and in accordance with the law of the land.• Set Leave Weekends usually extend from the completion of sports commitments on Saturday to the specified
day. No school meals are provided over a leave weekend and all students are required to leave the school. Students must leave the school with a parent or approved guardian or in approved transport.
• All students must return by 8.00pm as per the School Calendar.• House staff should not be expected to assess the suitability of proposed hosts for boarders. Parents must
provide names of approved people or contact the House Director when a request for leave is made. House staff may act for the parents of overseas students. However, it should be made clear to those parents that all care will be taken but not overall responsibility.
Students going on leave • A student may only go on overnight leave to a destination where an adult is going to be present. In
exceptional circumstances the school may give permission if an adult is not present. In all cases, the person who will be responsible must make contact with the appropriate House Director before leave can be granted.
• If a student is to go on leave to another student’s home, the parent of that student must first contact the host parent before requesting leave.
• If a student cancels leave, the parent must also confirm the cancellation with the House Director.
OUT OF BOUNDS • Girls’ houses are out of bounds to boys and vice versa, with clearly defined exceptions (laid down in house
regulations).• Students may not leave school grounds without permission from the House Director/Principal – see special
leave conditions.• Students who have permission from the House Director for farm leave must remain one paddock from
the river. Farm buildings and areas containing farm machinery are out of bounds to students and so is the paddock which includes the old rubbish tip and the effluent ponds.
• Students may not enter the swimming pool unless supervised by a qualified member of staff.
PARENTS VISITING BOARDING HOUSES It is imperative that parents take into consideration the privacy of all students when visiting boarding houses. Please remember the boarding house is the students’ home and respect this as you would have others respect your home. Parents do not have the right to enter boarding houses at will. Normal courtesy must apply.
Times to be wary of: before 7:30am, immediately after school (3:30 - 4:00pm); evenings 5:00 - 5:30pm; Prep break 7:30 - 8:00pm; after prep 8:30pm onwards.
The above times are when students are most likely to be changing. At all times it would be a wise policy for male visitors to female houses, and vice versa, to ask a student to check that the dormitory is clear to enter. If parents of the opposite sex wish to enter the house during change time, then contact should be made with House Staff or their son/daughter sent for.

COMPUTER ACCESSThere are 7 student computer rooms available throughout the school which are located in main faculty blocks and the Library/Information Centre. In addition, computers are provided in each boarding house common room area.
WIRELESS NETWORK (BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE – BYOD) RATIONALELearning at St Peter’s School is increasingly including the use of Internet enabled devices. Students are now required to bring a Microsoft Windows based or Apple MacOS laptop to school. This laptop must be able to connect to the internet wirelessly.
These laptops will be used as a tool in a ‘blended’ learning environment where other essential tools such as pen and paper are also used.
Our focus is on teaching and learning opportunities and not about a specific device, hence we have created an environment that is not operating system specific, however it is highly recommended that the laptop is running either Microsoft Windows or Apple MacOS.
St Peter’s recommends that all parents check their insurance to ensure that their child’s device is covered while at school.
WHICH LAPTOP?Feel free to contact Mr Andrew Scott (ICT Manager) via e-mail - [email protected] - or Mrs Jane Whyte (Director of e-Learning) at [email protected] should you require further support with your decision making.
CHOOSING A LAPTOP?Selecting a laptop is a personal choice for the individual and family. Some families are Apple orientated and others Windows. The school has invested in an infrastructure that is not operating system specific to allow individuals to choose a laptop which suits them best. The laptop chosen will be dependent on learning style, subject selection, and what is supported at home. Technology is continually evolving and so is the functionality of devices, thus the device of choice may change over time.If you plan to purchase a new laptop St Peter’s currently recommends either an Apple MacOS or Microsoft Windows based laptop with the following minimum specifications:• 11” screen• 4 cell battery• 2GB memory• 250GB hard drive• Wireless network capable• Protective case or carry bagAll laptops must be named.
Safe lockable storage will be available.
Please also consider the weight of the laptop and the size of the person carrying it.
TYPES OF DEVICES• Notebooks or Laptops running Microsoft Windows or Apple MacOS (screen size 11 inches or greater) These devices have the greatest functionality in our current environment and are recommended by the
school.• Chromebook (Notebooks and Laptops or equivalent running Google Chromium) These devices do not have the functionality to be used in our current environment and are not
recommended by the school.• Tablets (screen size 9.7” or greater) Students can also bring the following to supplement the use of their
notebook/laptop. These devices have great functionality for creativity and portability, with a usable screen size. However,
there are currently limitations with these devices when accessing some Internet-based content used by the school and when uploading assignment files. In addition, there are some limitations around the availability of applications that may be required. Tablets are great companion and display devices for small groups, but have significant limitations as input devices.
• Smart Phones and iPod Touches These devices have great functionality for creativity and portability but are limited due to a very small
viewing area and are more suited to being a companion device.
E-MAILStudents have their own email address and can be contacted easily. Their e-mail address is “username”@ stpeters.school.nz”. Usernames are allocated when they first enrol at the school.

INTERNET ACCESSAccess to the Internet is an essential part of many areas of the curriculum. The school has ultra-fast broadband over fibre. St Peter’s has state-of-the-art monitoring and filtering systems that are constantly maintained to ensure a safe educational ICT environment. All Internet usage and e-mails are logged then checked by multiple filters for appropriateness and viruses, to prevent students from visiting inappropriate sites.
PRINTINGThere are 26 printers and copiers located within a variety of academic areas and boarding houses that are accessible to students via school computers or their own devices.
PRINTING CHARGESStudent accounts will be charged the following amounts for A4 and A3 printing:
Black and White: $0.06 Colour: $0.20
Printing charges will be invoiced each term on the student’s account. Queries relating to the amount charged should be directed to the accounts department and a detailed summary of printing can be prepared.
STUDENT ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING - COMMUNITY PORTALThe Community Portal enables parents and caregivers to:
• View their child’s timetable.• View and download their child’s class assessments, behaviour and teacher comments in ‘real time’.• Contact their child’s individual teacher, tutor, dean or coach by e-mail.• View and download their latest statement of account and receipt history (provided that they are the fee payer).
St Peter’s aims to provide regular and timely assessment feedback through the Community Portal, to ensure that you are kept up to date with your child’s academic progress. If you do not already have access to the Portal we strongly recommend that you e-mail [email protected] to request your personalised login details.
The Community Portal is accessible from the ‘My St Peter’s” page on the school website (www.stpeters.school.nz).
If you have any questions or comments please e-mail [email protected].
REPORTINGAssessment, behaviour and informal comments are entered by staff over the course of each term. Parents are then able to view these as soon as they are entered by the teachers.
A formal report is also written for each student. These reports are sent out during Term 4. This formal report shows the assessments and behaviours for each term along with a formal comment.
Click the ‘Community Portal’ link. This will open a new window.
Welcome to the Community Portal log-on page. Your family’s unique username and password are entered here.
From the log-on page, you may change your password if you wish. Or if you have forgotten your password, click the ‘forgot your password?’ link and enter your username.
Your password will be sent to your listed home e-mail address. If you need any support accessing the St Peter’s Community Portal, phone 07 827 9899 or e-mail [email protected]

NAMING CLOTHINGIn a school with many students, boarding and day, it is essential that every item is name tagged as shown below. Extra name tapes can be ordered through the School Shop. All uniform purchased during the year by students is named before being given to the students unless we are notified in writing by parents. Although every care is taken by staff, who rely on correct naming methods, ultimately clothing is the responsibility of the owner. Footwear should be marked with a laundry marker, or shoe labels purchased through the shop.
NAME TAG POSITIONS
Tracksuit top:Front left motif position (on sky blue strip) and inside back colour.
All Socks named from the top (obscured when turned down).
Towels, handkerchiefs, and sheets: top left corner, short side. Duvet covers: centre open end.
All school uniform to be named in the centre inside neck or waist band.

THE BOARDING ENVIRONMENTWhile your child will be part of a large boarding community, he or she will still receive personal attention within his or her own boarding house.
Each house is home to approximately 50-68 students. The house is managed by the House Director with a Matron and two or three House Assistants.
Supervised prep times every day (Mon - Fri) help students to develop good study habits and achieve academic success. Life-long friends are made while boarding.
DORM DUTIESAll students are involved in maintaining the smooth running of their boarding house. Dorm jobs are allocated on a weekly basis and include jobs such as vacuuming, cleaning mirrors, emptying bins and collecting and distributing clean laundry. House Prefects and duty staff check that each job has been completed before the school day begins. Students also take turns to ensure the cleanliness of common areas in the House. Ablution cleaning is carried out by school cleaners.
MEALSAll meals are served in the Dining Hall and are compulsory for Years 7-11. Students wear uniform to breakfast and lunch and either their school tracksuit or uniform to dinner. Mufti may be worn after dinner during the week, after lunch Saturday afternoons, and throughout the day on Sunday, except when participating in or attending any official school function or sports event.
PREP TIMESAcademic success is important at St Peter’s. We believe regular and sustained revision/prep is a key to this success and set time aside for it each day.
Prep begins at 6.30pm and is conducted in silence. Students are expected to work independently and
conscientiously, causing no disturbance or distraction to others. Year 9 and 10 students do 1 hour 45 minutes
of prep each night. Senior students are expected to do a minimum of 2 hours. Group work during prep can be
arranged. Computers and wifi are available for use during prep. The school library is open and supervised during
boarding prep hours.
DAILY ROUTINES CAN VARY BETWEEN HOUSES
Monday - Friday
6.30am Wake up, shower and get dressed

Saturday
Similar routine as the rest of the week, without classes or prep time. Most students are involved in sport or extra- curricular activities. Leave is available following the conclusion of extra-curricular activities.

TYPE OF LEAVESt Peter’s Leave
WeekendsThese will be set out in the School Calendar each year. The school does not take responsibility for any arrangements made over these weekends, although bookings on public transport may be made through the House Director.
Weekend Leave
*Boarding Students Leave Form
*Pre-approved Leave Form
Students may request leave after sporting/extra-curricular commitments and house jobs are completed. They must return to school on Sunday evening at least 30 minutes prior to Chapel or by 8.30pm if no chapel is scheduled. Students in Year 7 - 11 may only leave the school with their parents, grandparents or another approved guardian/homestay parent. Students must remain off site until after dinner on Sunday, unless an early return is negotiated with the House Director. It is important that we know who is on site at all times for catering and evacuation purposes.
Saturday Day Leave Students may leave on a Saturday from 8.30am returning by 8.00pm, provided sporting/extra-curricular commitments and House jobs are completed.
Sunday Day Leave Students may go out from 8.00am to 7.00pm on Sundays.
Hamilton Sunday Day Leave
Friday Town Leave
*Hamilton Sunday Leave Form
Students are offered the opportunity to take Sunday Leave each weekend to The Base or Chartwell shopping centres. Students must apply for this leave through their House Director by Thursday evening, each week.
Students are offered the opportunity to travel on a bus into Cambridge from 4.00pm - 5.15pm on a Friday afternoon. Students travel in school day uniform. $2 for return trip.
School Leave Applications for leave during the school day are submitted through the Community Portal. This leave is to be arranged through the House Director or at Student Reception and the student is to be signed out by a parent/guardian.
Meal Leave Students may go out for a meal with parents or other close family members between 4.30pm and 6.30pm on week nights, provided that these plans do not interfere with their sporting/extra-curricular activities.
Chapel Leave Applications for leave from Sunday Chapel are made directly to the Principal.
TRAVELStudents may only travel in a car with others if parents/guardians have given their personal approval to the House Director. *Transportation of Other Students/by Other Students - Form
On fixed leave weekends and at the end of term, bookings for travel on public transport may be made through the House Director. School Reception does these bookings; however, they need to have at least one day’s notice. If you live in the Taupo or the Bay of Plenty areas, a special bus brings students back to school after leave weekends; you can expect a letter about this before the first leave weekend in Term 1.
Students must wear tidy mufti when travelling on public transport.
MAKING STUDENT CONTACTTELEPHONEWe do still have a communal telephone in each boarding house where students may receive calls, or make toll free calls.
MOBILE PHONEStudents may bring mobile phones to school. Their use is restricted to students’ free time or under teacher direction. Pre-pay cards are available from the School Shop. The school accepts no responsibility for mobile phones; students bring these to school at their own risk. We prefer parents to make contact outside of prep hours unless in an emergency.
E-MAILEvery student is given an e-mail account at school. They may access their e-mail within the boarding house and from any computer around the school.
MAILMail can be sent to your son or daughter and should be addressed as follows: Student Name Name of House St Peter’s School Private Bag 884 Cambridge 3450
Courier items should be sent to our street address: Student Name Name of House 1716 Cambridge Road, RD3 Hamilton 3283*Boarding Information and Forms will be emailed and available on the school website.

UNHAPPY COMMUNICATIONSome e-mails, letters or phone calls that you receive from your children may be sad or even angry. This is perfectly normal from time to time. If it continues, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s House Director.
EMERGENCY SITUATIONSFrom time to time some bad news may need to be passed on to your child. We encourage you to do this through the House Director so that he/she is completely aware of the difficulties or sadness your child is facing.
If you are overseas or out of town during your child’s stay in boarding, please advise the name/s of a local relative or guardian who can act in your absence should there be any concerns. GENERAL INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTSALCOHOLNo alcohol may be served to students at any time. No student is to be involved in serving alcohol at school events. No student is to be given alcohol at any school function or occasion.
Given the law change that under 20 year olds are not allowed to drive with any blood alcohol content, we have now adjusted our Leave Policy on parties.
We strongly recommend that no parties are held on weekends during term time. We will not grant leave specifically requested for students to attend parties during the week, or at weekends. Parties are better held on leave weekends or during term breaks.
APPOINTMENTSShould you wish the Matron to take your child to an appointment, she will require 24 hours notice for a Cambridge appointment or one week’s notice for an appointment in Hamilton. If the Matron is not available, alternative transport could mean a taxi fare. There is a preference for those appointments not to be made on a Monday or a Tuesday.
BICYCLES (OPTIONAL)Year 9-13 students may keep bicycles at school with their parents’ permission. The student must wear a helmet and keep the bike locked up when it is not in use. All bicycles must be registered with the House Director and used under approval from the House Director. With the new cycle way along side the river, students may request to cycle into Cambridge. Students must apply for this leave with their House Director and understand conditions apply.
CLOTHING AND LAUNDRYUniform and linen are sent to the main school laundry. All uniform and mufti clothing must be clearly named before the start of the year. Linen must also be clearly named, in more than one place. It is very difficult to return unnamed items. Please ensure your child gives some spare name tags to his/her Matron to name any new items which may be purchased during the term.
Each house has its own systems for washing mufti. The School Shop holds spare name tags for all boarding students and can name any additional uniform or mufti purchased during the year.
COMPUTERSEach house has four computers with Internet access available for students’ use. These are being phased out as most students have their own devices. Students’ personal devices can access the school’s wireless network within their houses and most campus environments.
DISBURSEMENTSHouse staff will charge certain costs to your child’s house disbursements. Typical charges may include: house outings or entertainment, bus tickets, haircuts, toothpaste, cash for a school field trip or trips to Hamilton. A detailed record of these charges is held in the house office and is transferred to the accounts office at the end of each term. This list is available on request but the total will simply appear on the school account as “house disbursements”. $100 per term can be disbursed with parent approval to be used for tuck expenses or discretionary house bank withdrawals.
HEALTHY SNACKSA range of snack food is available in houses at no cost. Items available depends on demand from students, but includes fruit, bread, spreads, spaghetti, muesli bars, cheese, crackers and yoghurt. Parents are welcome to provide additional tuck food to suit their child’s particular needs or taste. It is also helpful when students can provide their own plate, bowl and mug for suppers.
HOUSE ENTERTAINMENTHouse trips are organised throughout the year to a range of places around the Waikato and further afield. Students are encouraged to take an active role in initiating and organising these trips and activities in consultation with their House Director. Fast food (especially pizza) is often ordered in on weekends for students who do not go on leave. The cost of all fast food and outings is charged to your house disbursements. The cost of such entertainment can quickly add up. Please state any restrictions that you wish to apply to your child’s activities. *A permission slip for house activities is available online. Please ensure it is completed so that your child is able to participate in House entertainment.

Most Boarding Houses have Sky TV. DVDs are often shown in boarding houses on weekends. Any movies brought into the house by the students must be approved by the House Director before they are shown to the students.
HOLIDAY CLEANOUTHouses are often let out to groups from outside the school during the holidays. Students may be asked to pack away all personal items at the end of term to make space for groups coming in. Where possible, these items will be stored within the house.
HONESTYTheft is treated very seriously at St Peter’s. We value the trust which exists between students and believe it should be maintained. House Directors are happy to receive calls in any situation where this trust has been breached, or appears to have been.
Ensuring all items are clearly named can help us to track down any items which are misplaced.
HOUSE BANKEach house operates a house bank. Students are able to deposit and access money for tuck or spending on an outing through the House Director at specified times. We strongly encourage students to deposit any cash into the house banking system. It is impossible to trace cash which is missing or misplaced. The suggested deposit into a student’s account is $100 per term. This amount can be topped up at any time. DAY STUDENTSWELCOME TO ST PETER’S SCHOOLStudents at St Peter’s are required:
• To work hard academically and complete Prep to develop good work habits and a sound study routine.• To become involved in and take pride in all school activities • To develop sound ethics and responsibility towards others, having respect for fellow students, teachers and
those who work at the school.St Peter’s aim to create an environment which helps students become well-rounded individuals with an understanding of the Christian faith, a positive attitude in the classroom and an appreciation for cultural and sporting endeavours.
This is expressed in the school’s philosophical vision statement: “BODY, MIND & SPIRIT”.
DAY HOUSE RULES• Parr House is for boys and Gwynnelands House is for girls. Students may mingle in the courtyard outside but
may not visit each other’s houses.• Gardner House is for Year 13 students only• Day House students are permitted in the houses during out of class times, not during the academic class
time.• Students are expected to respect and care for house facilities• The Day Houses are locked when the day buses depart at 5pm Monday to Thursday and at 3.35pm on Fridays• Day House students need to secure their belongings in the lockers provided.
ALCOHOL
Alcohol is not permitted on school premises. Students under the influence will be disciplined.
We strongly recommend that no parties are held on weekends during term time. Parties are better held on leave weekends or during term breaks. St Peter’s accepts no responsibilities and does not condone parties serving alcohol to underage students.
APPOINTMENTS
Please, where possible, make outside appointments out of school hours. Afternoon activities are considered part of the school programme and should take priority.
ATTENDANCEAll students are to be at school by 8.10 am on a school day / 8.40 on Fridays.
If your child is going to be absent from school, please phone the School Office (07 827 9899 and select Option 2) no later than 8.30am. This is extremely important to ensure we can account for each student.
Any period of absence must be followed up with an explanatory note to Absentees, Student Reception office.
Absence 1/2 day - 1 day
Students arriving late to school must sign in at the Student Reception when they arrive at school. They will be expected to have a note from a parent or an appointment card, or the parent may have made prior communication to notify the school.
Students needing to leave school during the day, eg. for an appointment, must go to the Student Reception for a leave pass. They will need to sign out and show their appointment card, or have a note to say where they are going or prior communication must have been received from a parent.
Absence longer than 1 day
Absence longer than a half day for all students for any reason other than illness (Special Leave) requires prior permission from the Principal by way of written notification at least two days prior to leave being taken (email: [email protected]). The school holds the view that a student is expected and required to be at school in listed term times. Parents are asked to co-operate with this requirement and time their holidays and other such commitments so as not to create any conflict between family and school.
Where the school calendar indicates: ‘Compulsory attendance for all students’ day students are required to attend.
Lessons end at 3.20pm. Students involved in extra-curricular activities are required to stay at school until commitments have been met. Day buses depart Mon-Thurs 5.00pm and Friday 3.35pm.
Flexi-Time for Year 13 students can be applied for if the student has a study period in either Period 1 or Period 6 - apply to the Dean; Mrs Leanne Walker.

STUDENT VEHICLESYear 13 students may apply to bring a vehicle to school. They must provide driver licence and car vehicle licence. Forms are available online. Due to limited parking spaces for students, Year 12 students will not be granted automatic right to bring a car to school, (unless permission has been granted due to special cirumstances).

OUT OF BOUNDSBoundaries around the school are specified in order to minimise health and safety risks. Students must remain within these boundaries at all times. The following areas are out of bounds at all times:
• The farm and maintenance area. These areas contain risks such as chemicals, machinery and animals. • The main road (SH1). • Avantidrome - other than for scheduled classes.
During the school day, students may be anywhere within the school campus, subject to the ‘out of bounds’ areas communicated to students and school routines/requirements.
PRE-PAY PHONESThe School Shop sells phone cards for pre-paid phones. It is recommended that parents contact the shop to set a ‘phone card limit’ (e.g. $20 per month) so that spending on accounts is limited.
SPORT AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIESAll students must comply with the school’s extra-curricular programme.
Activities such as Athletics Day, Swimming Sports, Cross-country, Gwynnelands/Parr Chapel Service and inter-house competitions, e.g. music and end of year dinners, are considered part of the school programme and all day students are expected to attend.
Students involved in Saturday morning sport must attend — parents and families are most welcome to come and support them.
UNIFORMCorrect school uniform is to be worn at all times. Please check that your child has every item on the clothing list and that it is all clearly named and in good repair.
Day students supporting sport activities are to wear full tracksuits to matches.

PASTORAL CARESt Peter’s provides continuous supervision for international students throughout the school year and during holidays.
International parents are not required to appoint a ‘guardian’ as this support is provided by the International staff.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE DATESStudents are expected to be here for the start and finish of each term.
The dates for the 2017 year are on the School Calendar. Next year’s dates can be obtained from the International Office..
TUITION FEESTuition fees are revised each year in September. The Trust Board, which is a non-profit organisation, favours small annual increases rather than larger increases every few years.
Parents must pay for one academic year plus either boarding or homestay fees in advance. Tuition fees must be paid by 1 December each year to guarantee the student’s place for the next academic year. Fees unpaid after 1 December will accrue interest.
MONTHLY FINANCIAL ACCOUNTSEach student has a St Peter’s account to which costs are charged on a monthly basis.
Costs include uniform, stationery, house activities, medical bills, visa fees, music and academic tuition, telephone cards, airport transfers, transport by staff members, weekend homestays etc.
Overdue accounts accrue interest at 2% per month. Agents or parents are requested to provide details of who is to receive a copy of the account and whether it should be posted or e-mailed.
Parents are asked to provide details of either a credit card or New Zealand bank account so that the account can be cleared each month. If parents do not wish to do this, they must undertake to pay the account in full each month or pay estimated charges in advance so that the account is in credit.
The International Office will contact the parents for permission if the purchase or cost is optional and more than $60 (e.g. a ski trip or new football boots).
LINEN AND CLOTHINGThe International Office can purchase linen (sheets, towels, duvets) for boarding students. This will cost about $NZ290 - 360 and will be labelled. Please contact the International Office to arrange this.
All uniform and casual clothing must be labelled. The International Office will arrange the labels and for them to be sewn onto linen and clothing. There is a small charge for the sewing. As there is limited storage in the rooms, students should bring only one suitcase of casual clothing.
HOMESTAY AND LEAVE WEEKENDSMost students live in boarding houses and go to homestays for leave weekends.
The school closes for a three-day weekend twice a term and during school holidays.
The Homestay Co-ordinator will arrange suitable homestays in Hamilton or Cambridge. The charge is $250 per week and $160 per leave weekend.
POCKET MONEYStudents need about $150 - 200 pocket money each month. They are not to keep large amounts of cash in their homestay or boarding house.
Parents can either deposit the full amount into the child’s bank account once or twice a year and allow the child to manage it, or authorise the school to transfer a set amount into the student’s account once a month or before St Peter’s leave weekends, which is then charged to their school account.

ESOL CLASSESAll students who have English as a Second Language are assessed on arrival. They are required to attend ESOL classes, unless given special permission to attend mainstream English classes.
Students with very low English will be placed in an intensive English class to allow them to gain the skills they need to cope with subject classes at their year level.
Students whose English is adequate to cope with most subjects but who need extra support will be placed in mainstream subjects and ESOL.
