FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSI’m not from Edmonton, where will I live while I’m in the program?WBF has 42 units of affordable housing for WBF students (depending on availability). 18 units are for women with children.

What is the WBF program environment like?WBF programs offer you a supportive, safe environment in which you can build skills and confidence to achieve your goals. Career development and job coaching services complement our skills training to support graduates so that they can secure and retain a high wage career.

What’s involved in the assessment process? You will need to pass a basic Math and English comprehension test to ensure you can calculate, measure and comprehend instructional materials. Pre-assessment for drugs, alcohol and fitness-to-work is provided through our assessment partner, SureHire Occupational Testing. Some programs may require TOWES type testing or other specialized testing.

What wage can I expect to earn?Whether you go into an apprenticeship or non-apprenticeship such as Heavy Equipment Operator, these jobs pay well. Research wages & salaries at www.alis.alberta.ca/wageinfo

I’m interested in a trades related program, what is apprenticeship?Apprenticeship is an “earn while you learn” system which typically takes 3-4 years. It includes on-the-job training under the direct supervision of a qualified journeyman plus the completion of technical training, depending on the trade. For a complete list of all 51 Registered Trades go to www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca

What is Apprenticeship? Apprenticeship is a unique form of post secondary education. The apprenticeship process provides you with an earn while you learn pathway to a life-time career as a tradeswoman. Eighty percent of apprenticeship learning is on the job (while being paid by your employer), with 20 percent in technical training.

So, where is the work?Industry forecasts that maintenance projects will increase significantly in the coming years.

According to BuildForce Canada, from 2016 to 2023, moderate growth in new work across all engineering and resource markets in Alberta will drive requirements steadily higher. Most of the scheduled projects add jobs from 2015 to 2019.

These engineering-related projects add work for a selected group of trades and occupations:

This group has the highest overall growth in labour requirements and represents more than 55 percent (12,000 jobs) of total job creation in the major non-residential projects started from 2014 to 2019.
