SAN IGNACIO TOWN, CayoDistrict, Tuesday, September 16,2014: A thirty seven year old man and afifteen year old boy are today in jailon a burglary charge. At around 4:50 pm on Tuesday,September 16, Onesimo Chi Jr., 34,Belizean mason of an Alta Vista Streetaddress in San Ignacio, visited thepolice station where he filed aburglary report. Chi told the police that at around7:30 am he properly secured hishouse and left for the day. When hereturned later that day, he reportedlyheard strange noises inside the house.He allegedly saw a pair of unfamiliarblue slippers in the hallway leading tothe living room. Whilst making further checks insidethe house he allegedly saw two malepersons leaving his bedroom. He

On Sunday, September 14, Policewere called out to Duck Run3 where they found the body ofHispanic man with chop wounds tothe neck. The victim was identified by the wifeas that of her husband Pedro ArielDiaz Guien, 24, Guatemalan laborerresiding in Duck Run 3. It is reported that at around4:30 pm on Monday, September15, acting upon informationreceived, police visited theLos Tambos residence of JuanAntonio Leon, 30, Salvadoranfarmer and Olga Ofelia

A search of the house wasconducted leading to the discovery ofa white plastic bag containingsuspected cannabis seeds. Thesearch, extended to the yard,resulting in the discovery of atransparent plastic bag whichcontained several small plantsranging from one to two inches inheight, suspected to be marijuanaseedlings.

Leon and Sermeno were instantlydetained and escorted to the SanIgnacio police station where the seedswere weighed in their presencetipping the scales at 4.8 grams andwhen counted, the seedlingsnumbered 48. The detainees were subsequentlyarrested and charged for thecultivation of cannabis and for thepossession of cannabis. Laterthat same day, they appearedbefore Magistrate Narda Morgan,

where Leon pled guilty on bothcharges. He was fined two thousanddollars for the weed plants andtwo hundred dollars for the weedseed. He was ordered to paythe twenty two hundred dollarfines forthwith. Unable to comeup with the fine, he was transportedto the central prison in Hattievilleuntil he can either pay the fine orspend the concurrent one yearprison sentence imposed in defaultof paying the fine. The two jointcharges against Sermeno werewithdrawn.

The archbishop of Rio deJaneiro in Brazil has had hiscrucifix and ring stolen in anarmed robbery. Cardinal Dom OraniTempesta was on his way to anengagement in the city when hiscar was ambushed by three men. One of the robbers, who pointed agun at the cardinal, realised who hewas and apologised, an aide said. However, the gang continuedwith the crime only holding backfrom taking his vehicle as well.The cardinal's items were laterrecovered. No-one was hurt in the incident,which happened on Mondayevening in the Santa Teresadistrict of the city. The BBC's Gary Duffy in SaoPaulo says robberies are common inSanta Teresa - a bohemian areapopular with tourists - and have beenincreasing this year. A seminary student and aphotographer travelling in the carwith the cardinal were alsorobbed. Despite the ordeal, the cardinalcontinued on to his engagementwhile the student and thephotographer went to the police. Brazil's TV Globo says that thethieves abandoned most of thestolen property, which was laterrecovered. The ring and the cross were found,as were the archbishop's mobilephone and the seminarian's cassock. However, the photographer'sequipment is still missing. Belize City, September 11, 2014: The Special Envoy for Women andChildren, Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrowwishes to highlight the fact thatviolence against women in the family,workplace, community and society ingeneral, is unacceptable and a grossviolation of human rights. Violencewhether occurring in the home or inthe community, instils fear andinsecurity in women, often leadingthem not to report or to withdrawreports.

The Domestic ViolenceAct is there to provide protectionand the Police Department has anobligation to respond to all reportsof domestic violence regardlessof the perpetrator. Failure tohold perpetrators accountable

for their actions not only encouragesfurther abuse, but also gives theimpression that violence againstwomen and or men is acceptable ornormal. “The violence is perpetrated byone man, but the responsibilitygoes far beyond him. The friendsand neighbors who ignore orexcuse domestic violence, thedoctor or nurse who does not gobeyond treating the wounds, thepolice who may refuse to intervene

and all of us, in some way or theother, are responsible for thecontinued acts of violence againstwomen and men,” states Mrs.Simplis Barrow. She calls on all society, women andmen; boys and girls to condemnviolence against women and put anend to the violation of their humanrights and fundamental freedoms.
