STARCK
An honest, enthusiastic citizen of today's world, he considers it his duty to share with us his subversive vision of a better world which is his alone and yet which fits up like a glove.

STARCK
He is tireless in changing the realities of our daily life, sublimating our roots and the deepest wellsprings of our being into his changes. He turns the toothbrush into a noble object, squeezes lemons but the " wrong " way, and even makes our TV sets more fun to be with when he brings his " emotional style " into Thomson's electronic world.

He also takes time out to change our pasta, our ash-trays, lamps, toothbrushes, door handles, cutlery, candlesticks, kettles, knives, vases, clocks, scooters, motorcycles, desks, beds, taps, baths, toilets … in short, our whole life.

A life that he finds increasingly fascinating, which has brought him now closer to the human body with clothes, underwear, shoes, glasses, watches, food, toiletries et al., still determined that his designs shall, as ever, respect the nature and the future of mankind.

"We have to replace beauty, which is a cultural concept, with goodness, which is a humanist concept.“By good objects qualitatively but also good for the persons who are going to live with them- " the object must allow the person to open up, to be himself and to be happier ".

" Today, the designer does not have to be the accomplice any more of the industry so that things are sold better but above all, he must ask the question of the legitimacy of the objects to existI'm trying to move towards making objects which are honest, objects for non-consumers, for modern rebels ".

Semiotic Square
The structuralist semiotician Algirdas Greimas introduced the semiotic square (which he adapted from the 'logical square' of scholastic philosophy) as a means of analysing paired concepts more fully (Greimas 1987, xiv, 49). The semiotic square is intended to map the logical conjunctions and disjunctions relating key semantic features in a text.. Whilst this suggests that the possibilities for signification in a semiotic system are richer than the either/or of binary logic, but that they are nevertheless subject to 'semiotic constraints' - 'deep structures' providing basic axes of signification.

Semiotic Square Typology of Starck design
Regime of the representation Shape represents the Logical function Logic of correspondence and equivalence Utilitarian valuation of the object Examples razor Braun, robot Marie ( Moulinex)
Regime of the non-construction Shape incorporates the Logical function Logic of conformation Critical Valuation of the object Examples La Marie ( Starck), Perrier ( Szekely)
Regime of the construction Shape ( re ) creates the Logical function,
Logic of shock and break down, Existential Valuation of the object
Examples The toothbrush Fluocaril, iuicy Salif, Hot Bertaa ( Starck)
Regime of the non-representation, Shape extends beyond the Logical function,
Logic of surprise, Playful Valuation of the object
Examples Mister Meumeu, Richard reads, Louis XX, This is not a wheelbarrow ( Starck), the whistling kettle
(Grave), the family " King-Kong " ( Alessi), the iMac, etc.

Richard III
The very essence of stereotypical middle-class decor, the object as a mask, a technological jack-in-the-box.
These are the ingredients of this explosive "molotov cocktail", created by Starck moved by the sight of battered old armchairsabandoned in the street. "He" gives them new life and one as a gift to President Mitterrand for the Reading Room in his apartment in the Elysée Palace.
This is Starck at his most radical.

STARCK
Centre Pompidou presents the first Philippe Starck retrospective: not a design exhibition in the strict sense of the word but a fully-fledged show in which the spectator gets involved in the process of discovery of the French designer's ironic world.

"Venez, venez il n'y a rien à voir, il y a tout à recevoir" (come on, come on, there's nothing to see, but everything to get) is how a public crier dressed as a joker welcomes visitors to the exhibition, declaring its intent right from the start. The exhibition, designed by Starck himself, is contained in an 800 square metre elliptical space which is kept intentionally dark and ringed in with smoky curtains like those of the circus.

To a background of Laurie Anderson music, photographs of the designer's works pass across screens positioned above talking heads representing him.Standing on the ground in the centre is "l'Ombre", a large bronze sculpture materialising the creative artist's subconscious.

STARCK
From his early prototype armchairs to the Alessi toothbrush and the renovation of Hotel Mondrian in Los Angeles, Philippe Starck self-critically tells the story behind the genesis of over 180 objects, the reflections that led to their creation, the reasons for their success or the meaning of their lack of success. Once in a while actors appear amidst the audience to impersonate some of the designer's obsessions and get them involved in the theatrical production
