Welcome
Stanmore Golf Club opened in 1893 and for more than a century has been
a source of pleasure and pride to countless golfers. Set in magnificent
mature parkland, Stanmore provides a delightful yet challenging golfing
environment for both members and visitors alike.
To find such a fine course in this secluded setting so close to London
is a constant surprise to the visitor. Members are rightly proud of their
club, which is a nice mixture of traditional private members’ club, but
at the same time modern and progressive. Our membership categories
encourage a healthy balance of young professionals, couples, and retirees
from all walks of life – brought together by a common passion for the
world’s greatest game!
One of the most challenging courses in Middlesex with treelined fairways
demanding accuracy from the start.
The course plays to 5,974 yards as a par 69 and provides a good test of golf
for players of all abilities. The scenery is memorable too, with spectacular
views across the county from the highest points on the course.
The clubhouse opens onto a south-facing patio in front of the 18th green
with a spectacular view over the course and provides the perfect setting
for weddings, functions and conferences. The relaxing surroundings are
matched by outstanding service from Stanmore’s attentive staff.
We look forward to seeing you soon.

History
From its extraordinary origins as a ‘gift’ from the Gordon family,
Stanmore Golf Club has been both a place to play golf seriously and also
a retreat to enjoy the company of friends and acquaintances. Pleasure and
competition, companionship and rivalry, striving against others and the
private contest with the course itself; these are some of the themes that
run through the history of our club.
When Frederick Gordon moved into the hotel business, he began
building the largest chain of hotels in the world, including five major
hotels in London. He became one of the world’s greatest hoteliers with
a personal wealth estimated at £2m, an enormous sum at the end of the
19th century.
In 1882 Gordon bought Bentley Priory, a fine 18th century house, turning
part of it into a luxury country hotel. He promptly built a branch line to
link his estates with the main rail connections at Wealdstone - a station
house still stands at the junction of Gordon Avenue and Old Church
Lane. He then began to lay out a golf course over neighbouring Stanmore
Park, initially for the amusement of his friends and guests.
Gordon had an elite circle of friends including lawyers, city brokers and
MPs, and it was in 1893 together with his friend Thomas Francis Blackwell
(of the Crosse & Blackwell dynasty) that they turned it into a private
members club with lawns and tennis courts.
www.stanmoregolfclub.co.uk | 7
After the Great War Alister MacKenzie was employed to reconstruct
the course. MacKenzie was one of the first most prominent golf course
designers who, in the late 1920’s relocated to the United States where he
carried out some of his most notable work including Augusta National
Golf Club.
His approach “to imitate the beauties of nature (and presumably the
hazards) so closely as to make his work indistinguishable from nature
itself ” formed the basis of turning Stanmore Golf Club into the charming
oasis that you see today.

The Course
We are very proud of our golf course, which we believe to be the
most picturesque and enjoyable to play in the area. The course plays to
5,974 yards as a par 69 and provides a good test of golf for players of all
abilities. The treelined fairways make accuracy from the tee important.
We have two par 5s, five tricky par 3s, with the remaining par 4s of
varying lengths. Each hole has a character of its own, and the course
offers spectacular views of the surrounding area.
The 7th, a 352-yard par 4 off the white tees, is probably the hole visitors
remember most from a visit to Stanmore. It is a very picturesque hole,
situated at one of the highest points in Middlesex and offers stunning
views across the county.
Stanmore is not a particularly long course, but is quite narrow and will
test your ability to hit straight off the tee to the full. Big trees and thick
bushes are waiting everywhere ready to penalise errant shots. Several
doglegs allow the really proficient golfer the chance to showcase their
abilities, with the opportunity to shape shots both ways throughout
the round.
On most holes it is better to be short than long because invariably a
great deal of trouble awaits behind the greens. Having hit the green, you
will find the putting surfaces fast and true and in exceptional condition.

Tuition
Whether you’re an accomplished player or simply looking to get into the
game, the quickest and easiest way to play better golf and lower your
scores is to book a lesson with one of our PGA professionals.
We have several styles of tuition to suit your need from a personal one-
to-one lesson to a more relaxed group lesson with other players of a
similar standard. We will teach golf techniques that get the most out of
your game whatever age or standard you may be.
Our coaching facilities include a covered practice area, practice green,
chipping and pitching area and two practice bunkers and an 18 hole course.
On-course tuition enables technique and the tactical side to the game to
be addressed at the same time.
Learning the correct thought process can often be an eye-opening and
rewarding experience for the novice player and can lead to better scores.
Why not buy gift vouchers for a loved one if you think their golf needs a
little help. Or for special occasions.

Members’ Golf
All the playing sections at Stanmore are very active and play regular
competitions and matches against other clubs, offering competition to
male and female golfers of any age or ability.
Tigers’ Section (handicaps 4-12 inclusive)
The Tigers play matches in the Middlesex League, which follows a group
format followed by knockout competition for the group winners. They
are a very sociable group and every year go away together as a team-
building exercise.
The Tigers have been extremely successful in recent times winning an
unprecedented treble of the Frank Rowse Trophy, the Middlesex Tigers
League and the Johnson Cameron Trophy, the latter event being claimed
by members of the Tigers’ B Section.
Foxes’ Section (handicaps 9 - 19)
The Foxes section is affiliated to the Middlesex County Foxes Association
and it is the largest section at Stanmore with more than 200 golfers. The
Foxes’ aim is to encourage existing members and, in particular, our new
members to take part in as many events as possible. The section has a
very active and full season playing 18 home and away matches against
nine other clubs, and there are similar matches played against the other
sections of the club - High Handicap, Tigers, Ladies, Juniors and the Past
Foxes Captains.
We also have the more competitive matches and where a host of trophies
are available to win in the club’s own competitions.
www.stanmoregolfclub.co.uk | 17
Rabbits’ Section (handicaps 19-28 inclusive)
The Rabbits Section is also known as the High Handicap section, which
celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2015, is the only section that plays
throughout the year against other local clubs.
In the summer months, they play home and away against 14 local clubs
and in the winter months against five other clubs, making a total of 28
summer and ten winter matches. They also play matches against the
Ladies, Foxes and the Juniors as well as participating in the inter-club
Stanley West knockout competition in which teams of nine compete in
singles matches.
Seniors’ Section (handicaps single figures to 28)
Stamore Seniors’ with a minimum age of 55 and a handicap range from
single figures upwards represent a cross section of ability within the Club.
From April to November some 27 matches are played against other local
clubs in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
There are numerous friendly matches both home and away that are
always followed by a sit-down meal. The Seniors Cup, held early in the
season and the President’s Shield, at the end of the year are the two main
events in the seniors’ golfing calendar at Stanmore.
The section also plays in the Felmingham Trophy, a senior’s knockout
competition for players aged 60 and above.

Union. It is a thriving section with over 80 members. Regular competitions
are played on Tuesdays and Sundays throughout the year. Junior girls are
encouraged to join the weekend Stableford and Medal competitions.
Both friendly and competitive matches are played with other clubs
within the county including the Pearson Trophy and the MLCGA
Interclub Scratch League with Stanmore winning the Div II Trophy in
two consecutive years 2011 & 2012.
There’s an impressive range of silverware and boarded competitions
such as:
• The Ballands Trophy, played in pairs over 18 holes from November -
March, with the leading players qualifying for the knockout in the spring.
• The Winter Foursomes, from October to March, is open to all
members with a handicap of 36 and below.

Juniors
We recognise that juniors are the future of golf, so here at Stanmore
we teach youngsters of all ages and abilities, in a friendly environment
where they can make friends, learn golf and have fun.
Junior lessons can be given on a one-to-one basis or in groups. We run
junior classes for beginners, younger players, elite players and our very
own junior section team.
Beginner ClassesThese are aimed at teaching children the basics to enable them to
get out and enjoy the game as quickly as possible. Learning sound
fundamentals at an early age means many years of frustration on the
course later in life can be avoided!
Junior Progress CourseJunior improvement programmes can be created to suit the needs and
aspirations of eac child. Junior Groups – Members and non-members
Junior group classes are run over the course of the year. Some will take
place on weekends for members of the junior section, while others are
scheduled for halfterm, Easter and the summer school holidays.
The junior section team has been largely successful in past years, being
encouraged by the PGA professionals who coach them, the junior
organisers who manage them and their parents. Regular competitions
are held for our under-18s, including a Medal and a Stableford each
month. The juniors also play matches against other clubs and participate
in two leagues.

Practice on the Green Dental CareWhere caring dentistry comes into play…
Do you have bleeding gums? Are you aware of the link between Gum disease
and heart disease?
Your mouth is a window to your overall health and many debilitating illnesses can be linked to your oral heath status. Many medications and diseases (such as diabetes) can affect your body’s response to bacteria and infection, potentially making you high risk for dental decay and periodontal disease
which in turn can have detrimental effect on your health.
When you come for your check up, not only does your dentist insure your teeth are healthy but your dentist will also be doing a cancer screening, performing a periodontal (gum) screening
and assessing for any potential future problems.
We believe that everyone deserves a beautiful smile and the best possible care.
We have taken great care in equipping each surgery with up to date instruments, equipment and materials to ensure your visit to us will be enjoyable and painless. We strongly believe in preserving the old-fashioned atmosphere of a family orientated, friendly dental surgery where you will feel secure in the knowledge that we will always do our very best to
accommodate you and make you feel at home.

St Luke’s Hospice
Stanmore Golf Club is a keen fund-raiser for charity, particularly for
the local St. Luke’s Hospice for whom we have raised several thousand
pounds since forming our association around six years ago.
St Luke’s, based in Kenton Road, Harrow, is a cause close to our heart
and a pillar for the local community, doing some wonderful work and
providing expert care to patients and much-needed support to their
relatives and friends.
St Luke’s is an independent charity and like most charities in recent
times has felt the results of the credit squeeze. We at Stanmore are in
the fortunate position where we are able to help and do so at every
opportunity.
One of the most popular events we hold to raise money is the
Greenkeeper’s Revenge Golf Day, generally held at the start of
September. This is an opportunity for Stanmore’s head greenkeeper to
get his own back on members for any criticism that has been levelled at
him throughout the year. Industrial fairway mowers are placed to guard
the greens, pin positions are chosen to ensure nigh impossible putts,
flags are randomly removed from greens, and golfers are dowsed by the
course sprinklers when they least expect it.
A meal and charity auction follows, while local businesses are hugely
supportive in sponsoring holes and offering raffle prizes.

How to Find us
Stanmore Golf Club is handily placed, with excellent links to Central
London. We are just 15 miles from Marble Arch, and one mile from
Stanmore tube station (Jubilee Line) and two miles from junction 4 of
the M1 Motorway.
However, once you are out on the course, the seclusion provided by
hundreds of mature trees means that you would not know you were so
close to central London.
For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is HA7 2RL.
Directions from the M1
If travelling south/eastbound on the M1, leave at junction 4 and exit on
to the A41 Edgware Way. (Note if travelling north/westbound on the
M1 there is no exit at junction 4, it is necessary to leave at junction 5,
rejoin the motorway heading in the opposite direction and then leave at
junction 4). Turn right at the next roundabout after about one mile onto
the A410. Continue straight on for nearly two miles, ignoring turnings
to the left and right for the A4140. Turn left into The Chase and after
500 yards turn left into Gordon Avenue. The entrance to the club is
signposted and is around 400 yards down on the right.
