Stanmore Golf Club opened in 1893 and for more than a century has been a source of pleasure and pride to countless golfers. Set in magnificent mature parkland, Stanmore provides a delightful yet challenging golfing environment for both members and visitors alike.

To find such a fine course in this secluded setting so close to London is a constant surprise to the visitor. Members are rightly proud of their club, which is a nice mixture of traditional private members’ club, but at the same time modern and progressive. Our membership categories encourage a healthy balance of young professionals, couples, and retirees from all walks of life – brought together by a common passion for the world’s greatest game!

One of the most challenging courses in Middlesex with treelined fairways demanding accuracy from the start.

The course plays to 5,974 yards as a par 69 and provides a good test of golf for players of all abilities. The scenery is memorable too, with spectacular views across the county from the highest points on the course.

The clubhouse opens onto a south-facing patio in front of the 18th green with a spectacular view over the course and provides the perfect setting for weddings, functions and conferences. The relaxing surroundings are matched by outstanding service from Stanmore’s attentive staff.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

From its extraordinary origins as a ‘gift’ from the Gordon family, Stanmore Golf Club has been both a place to play golf seriously and also a retreat to enjoy the company of friends and acquaintances. Pleasure and competition, companionship and rivalry, striving against others and the private contest with the course itself; these are some of the themes that run through the history of our club.

When Frederick Gordon moved into the hotel business, he began building the largest chain of hotels in the world, including five major hotels in London. He became one of the world’s greatest hoteliers with a personal wealth estimated at £2m, an enormous sum at the end of the 19th century.

History

In 1882 Gordon bought Bentley Priory, a fine 18th century house, turning part of it into a luxury country hotel. He promptly built a branch line to link his estates with the main rail connections at Wealdstone - a station house still stands at the junction of Gordon Avenue and Old Church Lane. He then began to lay out a golf course over neighbouring Stanmore Park, initially for the amusement of his friends and guests.

Gordon had an elite circle of friends including lawyers, city brokers and MPs, and it was in 1893 together with his friend Thomas Francis Blackwell (of the Crosse & Blackwell dynasty) that they turned it into a private members club with lawns and tennis courts.

After the Great War Alister MacKenzie was employed to reconstruct the course. MacKenzie was one of the first most prominent golf course designers who, in the late 1920’s relocated to the United States where he carried out some of his most notable work including Augusta National Golf Club.

His approach “to imitate the beauties of nature (and presumably the hazards) so closely as to make his work indistinguishable from nature itself” formed the basis of turning Stanmore Golf Club into the charming oasis that you see today.

We are very proud of our golf course, which we believe to be the most picturesque and enjoyable to play in the area. The course plays to 5,974 yards as a par 69 and provides a good test of golf for players of all abilities. The tree-lined fairways make accuracy from the tee important. We have two par 5s, five tricky par 3s, with the remaining par 4s of varying lengths. Each hole has a character of its own, and the course offers spectacular views of the surrounding area.

The 7th, a 352-yard par 4 off the white tees, is probably the hole visitors remember most from a visit to Stanmore. It is a very picturesque hole, situated at one of the highest points in Middlesex and offers stunning views across the county.

Stanmore is not a particularly long course, but is quite narrow and will test your ability to hit straight off the tee to the full. Big trees and thick bushes are waiting everywhere ready to penalise errant shots. Several dog- legs allow the really proficient golfer the chance to showcase their abilities, with the opportunity to shape shots both ways throughout the round.

On most holes it is better to be short than long because invariably a great deal of trouble awaits behind the greens. Having hit the green, you will find the putting surfaces fast and true and in exceptional condition.

The Course

Restaurant Dining

We have all the traditional golfer’s favourites available from our a la carte menu, together with a selection of tempting daily offers.

The club makes good use of the dining facilities and has a regular Sunday Lunch and Thursday Evening a la carte dining that are also open to non-members so why not bring your friends and family too! Both are eagerly anticipated and so well received that pre-booking is now necessary.

You do not have to be a member to enjoy our culinary delights, simply give Martin a call on 07956 918640 or call the office on 020 8954 2599 Ext 1 to book a table.

Stanmore Golf Club is a keen fund-raiser for charity, particularly for the local St. Luke’s Hospice for whom we have raised several thousand pounds since forming our association around six years ago.

St Luke’s, based in Kenton Road, Harrow, is a cause close to our heart and a pillar for the local community, doing some wonderful work and providing expert care to patients and much-needed support to their relatives and friends.

St Luke’s is an independent charity and like most charities in recent times has felt the results of the credit squeeze. We at Stanmore are in the fortunate position where we are able to help and do so at every opportunity.

One of the most popular events we hold to raise money is the Greenkeeper’s Revenge Golf Day, generally held

at the start of September. This is an opportunity for Stanmore’s head greenkeeper to get his own back on members for any criticism that has been levelled at him throughout the year. Industrial fairway mowers are placed to guard the greens, pin positions are chosen to ensure nigh impossible putts, flags are randomly removed from greens, and golfers are dowsed by the course sprinklers when they least expect it.

A meal and charity auction follows, while local businesses are hugely supportive in sponsoring holes and offering raffle prizes.

For more information on St Luke’s, visit the website, www.stlukes-hospice.org, or to enquire about fund-raising or how to make a donation contact Pam Russell, the Director of Fundraising and Community Relations, on 020 8382 8040 or via e-mail at: [email protected]

Stanmore Golf Club is handily placed, with excellent links to Central London. We are just 15 miles from Marble Arch, and one mile from Stanmore tube station (Jubilee Line) and two miles from junction 4 of the M1 Motorway.

However, once you are out on the course, the seclusion provided by hundreds of mature trees means that you would not know you were so close to central London.

For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is HA7 2RL.

Directions from the M1If travelling south/eastbound on the M1, leave at junction 4 and exit on to the A41 Edgware Way. (Note if travelling north/westbound on the M1 there is no exit at junction 4, it is necessary to leave at junction 5, rejoin the motorway heading in the opposite direction and then leave at junction 4). Turn right at the next roundabout after about one mile onto the A410. Continue straight on for nearly two miles, ignoring turnings to the left and right for the A4140. Turn left into The Chase and after 500 yards turn left into Gordon Avenue. The entrance to the club is signposted and is around 400 yards down on the right.
