I finally understand “MARCH MADNESS”. Took me a while but I get it now. The “madness” comes from snow storms that occur on or include Monday nights. When I had to cancel yet another B-CCC meeting because of inclement weather, I felt the MARCH MADNESS. So much for global warming too! Those way cold temperatures did nothing to resolve my madness. I am happy that March is finally here and maybe my madness will dissipate. Looking forward to Spring with flowers, warm temperatures and NO SNOW. We are coming up to the end of our club year soon. I challenged YOU to take on a role in your club. To date, I have heard from nobody. Please think of what you can do to help your camera club. We have positions available and YES, you can do any job here. They are not that bad. Ask George Smyth, Zolt Levay, Pat French or any of the present club officers. You are needed here. Photo Talk Meeting - March 14Secrets of the Night

by Steve Bruza, VP Photo Talk What’s the secret of night photography? It’s actually very simple: You’re taking pictures that most people don’t take. Most of the time you will find your photos are a bit more interesting, dramatic, even mysterious and attention-getting. However, there are a number of things to consider to make high quality images that we will explore at our Photo Talk on March 14.

Instead of telling you how to make good night photos – that’s better done at a future How-To or by simply doing your own experimentation – rather we will talk more about the emotional elements used to create a great night shot. For example time is one of the more powerful concepts most night photographers use with powerful impact, so we will start by looking at examples that reflect that approach. We might find where common sights are totally altered by long exposures.

Next careful and effective use of available light is

another critical element in night photography. We will also examine other examples of images where light is either enhanced or reduced by the maker. Perhaps the reason some photographers enjoy making night shots is because they can be more engaged in the creative process. Maybe some of these images will encourage you to have fun capturing available light at night to make something special and perhaps award winning at a future competition.

After we look at a few secrets of night photography our usual Photo Talk agenda is reviewing digital entries from the previous competition. It’s a great opportunity to discuss our work beyond what the judge thought and discuss details about each image. Here you can also ask questions and use it as a learning experience to develop new skills or be inspired to try a new approach. We might even find some night shots in the competition and discover additional secrets to enhance your own images.

Multi-Media Workshop Continues on March 10Our Slide Show Workshop

by Vincent Ferrari The next meeting for the slideshow workshop group will be on Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. This will be our final review meeting. Bring your slideshow to the meeting on a disc or flash drive, and we will watch and critique it for you. It can be finished or still in progress.

Either way, the group will be happy to give you helpful hints and suggestions. And remember, all finished shows are due to me by Thursday, March 31 for our annual presentation night, which will be on April 18.

March Field Trip - Harpers Ferry, W.Va.March 19

by Jeanine Cummins, Field Trip Leader The March field trip will take place at Harpers Ferry National Park and surrounding areas on Saturday, March 19, 2016. Harpers Ferry is approximately 80 miles from the Bowie-Crofton Camera Club. Harpers Ferry became a Harpers Ferry National Monument on June 30, 1944 and an act of Congress changed the name from Monument to National Historical Park on May 29, 1963. The town issteeped in American history. Three states meet in the area West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland. We will be visiting Jefferson Rock, Virginius Island and St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church. Fees and passes

cost $10 per vehicle. A lot of walking will be involved and those of you, who are interested, some moderate hiking. Lunch/Dinner will take place at the Potomac Grille located in the historic area of Harpers Ferry. Details are still being developed, a sign-up sheet will be posted during upcoming meetings. Competition CornerFebruary Competition Results

by Dick Chomitz, VP Competition

The competition for February 1, 2016 had 148 total entries submitted by 75 competitors, a marked improvement of 37 entries and 16 competitors. Please keep it up. Congratulations to Warren E. Wilson on winning the Travel Trophy (see photo below). Frank Van Riper did a great job as judge, his travel background combined with instructive comments made this contest a great learning experience. Also, thanks to the many club members who helped the evening go smoothly – those who set up and cleaned up the meeting hall; those who accepted and handled the prints, and our projectionist who ran the digital competition. Without these people there would be no competition. Congratulations to the winners of the Travel Competition. We ask that competitors follow these few procedures to help ensure that prints are handled smoothly and efficiently:• Have your entry slip filled out completely before

stepping up to the table to submit your prints. We recommend printing the entry form from the B-CCC website. It is found under the competition tab. The date window has been updated for 2015-16.• Make sure to include an UP arrow and the submission class (Novice or Advanced) on the back of each print. • Make sure the information on the back of your prints is legible and dark enough to be read in dim light.• Don’t submit double-matted prints. The March 7 competition theme will be “Weather”. The variety of subject matter is unlimited. Here, the object will be to impress the judge with unusual perspectives on snow, rain, cloud patterns, etc. Focus on impact and learn to observe momentary things such as frost or rain on a windshield, children sledding, icicles, storm fronts. Remember, the judge will only see this for a few seconds so it needs to be strong enough to want to see it again.

March Competition JudgeGreg Holden will judge the “Weather” topic set for March 7

Greg Holden is a photographer from Rockville, Maryland. Greg views photography as a way of showing others how you interpret the world around you. Greg looks beyond the obvious, challenging himself to find interesting shapes and juxtapositions in nature and situations he discovers in his travels. While Greg has seen many beautiful sunrises and grand landscapes, he finds that the little scenes often overlooked by others are the ones that fuel his photographic creativity. Photographing the things that others might not even notice like an acorn sprouting, the patterns made by rust and faded paint on an old automobile, or textures in the windblown sand of a local beach. It is these types of non-traditional scenes and compositions that Greg looks for when he judges photography contests. You can see Greg’s work on his website www.imagesunderfoot.com, and follow him on Flickr at: www.flickr.com/photos/holdengs.

April Competition JudgeRoderick Barr will judge the “Nature” topic set for April 4

Artistic Interests: My primary goal as a photographer is to create personalized interpretations and representations of the natural world and of historical interactions between people and that natural world. I have been interested primarily in black and white photography as both a film and digital photographer.

Photo Experience: Between 1985 and 1989 taught both credit and non-credit photography courses at the Maryland College of Art and Design in Silver Spring, MD. Over the past 20 years have served frequently as a judge for the Bowie-Crofton, Silver Spring, North Bethesda and NIH camera clubs and as a print judge

for the last two annual competitions of GWCCC. Founding member of the Artist’s Gallery in Columbia and a member of the Foundry Street Gallery at Savage Mill. Founding member of the Maryland Photographic Alliance which over its 20 year history held numerous group shows in Maryland. Helped organize and hang many multi-media shows for Howard County Visual Artists Alliance. Exhibits: Solo exhibits include many shows in the Slayton House (now Bernice Kish) Gallery, three shows in the Howard Community College Gallery and two shows in the Foundry Street Gallery. Work included in numerous small group shows in Howard County, Baltimore, Annapolis and Hagerstown.

B-CCC Competition Themes for 2016-2017

There will be a new twist for the non-recurring competition themes for the next club year. Instead of having detailed explanations of what each theme should entail, there will simply be one word. The interpretation of that one word is up to each photographer entering the competition. It should prove to be an interesting change. The

recurring themes of Travel and Nature will remain the same, as will the two open themes.

Dates shown are the first Mondays of the month. They are subject to change if conflicts arise.

March Program Meeting - Feb. 21Peter Tomlinson - Fine Art Photographer

by Catherine Sheppard, VP Programs

Our March speaker is Peter Tomlinson, a well-known, local fine art photographer, whose work features subjects captured during his many years of travel, in local or overseas locales. His passion and primary areas of work are nature, travel, and landscape photography. Tomlinson accepts a variety of commissions, in particular “natural” photos of children.

Originally born and educated in the south of England, Tomlinson lived for over 40 years, at various time periods, in Scotland, Paris, and Monaco. He now calls Falls Church, Virginia home. When asked, “Why Virginia?”, he says that he finds that the United States is full of many beautiful areas, and a significant number only a short drive away from his Virginia home.

Peter is a self-taught artist. He has been taking pictures for over 30 years, but in the last two thirds of that time span became serious about the business.

Like most of us, his actual career in international film and television distribution demanded much of his time. In fact, the extensive job-related international travel required afforded little time on his own for photography. However, in the past decade Tomlinson has been able to devote himself full-time to photography, with marked success. And when he now travels, he spends his time at work with his camera.

Tomlinson has exhibited in five juried shows at the Art League in the Alexandria, Virginia Torpedo Factory and had had a number of exhibitions of his work in the metropolitan area. He also is an active participant in local photography and craft shows and a regular at the Montgomery Farm Womens’ Cooperative Market in Bethesda and the Georgetown Flea Market.

Out and AboutWhat B-CCC members are up to this month

by Vincent Ferrari, Editor

Ann Rohlfing has an image hanging at the Annual Art competition exhibit at Adkins Arboretum near Tuckahoe State Park on the Eastern Shore. Her image, “Wood Frog at Home on Forest Floor” won an Honorable Mention. The theme of the exhibit is the local Eastern Costal Plain. The press release from the exhibit states, “Detailed nuances of texture and earthy color are captured in Bowie photographer Ann Rohlfing’s intimate shot of a wood frog sitting perfectly camouflaged on a bed of tulip poplar leaves”. The exhibit runs through April 1.

www.adkinsarboretum.org/programs_events/art.html

Clarence Carvell and Bill Collins are off on a

photographic tour of Cuba. No doubt they will return with multitudes of wonderful images for us to see.

And speaking of travels, Dick Russell and Kathy McBee are off to Australia and New Zealand for several weeks of sightseeing and photographic bliss. We wish them well on their travels, and look forward to seeing what they come home with on their hard drives.

Ann and John Krumrein are featured in an art exhibition at Prince George’s Community College. The exhibit is presented in the Marlboro Gallery, at 301 Largo Road, on the Largo Campus, and will run through April 6. The reception will be on Thursday, March 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

I’m sure everyone has seen Steve Bruza’s very imaginative competition images. His water drops, mannequin heads, and abstracts never cease to amaze

and impress me. Well I hope that Steve will reveal all, including his inspiration, during his how to presentation this month.

Parting Shot

This month’s Parting Shot is from Albert Alexander. If you would like your image and story presented here, send it to:

[email protected].

Mt Carmel Waterfalls: On the Island of Grenada, West Indies (WI).

Located two miles south of St. Andrews (Grenville), and also known as the Marquis Waterfalls, it is the highest on the island, with two falls cascading over 70 feet into the pools below.

The falls can be reached quite easily, with a relatively easy hike through a few private properties (gardens), where some of the local spices and fruits are grown. It is not easy to get lost, since the sound of the falls will lead you directly there.

An entrance fee is charged by the property owners, and guides are available, should you need one.
