My sister was a bit Elvis obsessed. So as a child I was subjected to many Saturday Elvis movie marathons. Little did I know that these were training sessions for my moonlighting as an Elvis impersonator during my senior year in high school. I became an Elvis fan by default and learned to appreciate the nuances of what made Elvis so special.

Even though Elvis has been dead for over 40 years his impact is still felt today. When we think of the King we think about his hip movements, his charisma, his voice and of course his rock-and-roll, rock-a-billy sound. But it’s easy to forget how controversial Elvis once was.

Elvis’ rise to fame came during the apex of the Civil Rights movement and his music was influenced by many black artists like BB King, Ike Turner, and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup. He was a white man singing black music and many people took offense.

Yet the real controversy started when Elvis appeared on the Milton Berle Show and shook his hips, as he does, causing TV sensors to require his future performances to be filmed from the waist up. His rock-and-roll music was seen as impure and his dancing as lewd.

How obscure it seems now, in hindsight, to pass Elvis Presley off as sinful and wild. It begs to question what people will look back at 40 years from now and wonder why we made such a big fuss over something so obviously non-offensive. Will it be matters of race, politics, nationality or other affiliations? Or will it be how we view love and how we treat our fellow men and women?

All Shook Up takes us on a journey, one similar to my own first experiences with Elvis. We visit a town and culture that views things in black-and-white. The first Elvis movies I saw were all in black-and-white and I assumed that’s just how things were. Then I saw a full color Elvis and my perception shifted. In the musical a whole town has to adapt to the dynamic changes they are encountering. They are presented with new and colorful realities that challenge them.

Ask yourself which character you are in the show, are you the one who is seeing in black-and-white or are you a character daring to live in technicolor where new experience, ways of loving and seeing others is embraced and adopted? Ask yourself, are you someone who lets new experiences shake you up? What is the roustabout in your life that you don’t want to accept, what new things can you open yourself to in order to live a more loving and colorful life?

I hope you enjoy the show and that you are both entertained and enlightened.

who’s who?

Elizabeth Tietz - Sophomore, (Miss Sandra) has participated in theatre across Houston for the past 8 years. Recently, she was seen in Spring Awakening (Ilse), American Idiot (Ensemble), Carrie: The Musical (Norma), A Piece of My Heart (Martha), and The 25th Annual ... Spelling Bee (Rona Peretti). She is currently a student at the TUTS Humphrey’s School of Musical Theatre. She was also a Mainstage Finalist in Solo Musical at the 2017 Texas Thespians State Festival. She would like to thank the cast, crew, and directors of All Shook Up for making this show such a wonderful experience as well as her incredible family, her vocal coach Jack Beetle, and everybody who has encouraged and supported her all these years.

Emma Wells - (11th grade/ Mayor Matilda Hyde) has survived great strife her junior year to perform on the stage today. Her favorite shows include HEATHERS (Ms. Fleming), THE TOXIC AVENGER (Diane/Nun/Fred), and THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE (Panch/Mitch/Barfee) at Wildfish Theatre, SHREK (Lord Farquaad) at Queensbury Theatre, and PETER AND THE STARCATCHER (Smee) at MHS. Emma would like to thank onion rings, an abundance of coke-zeros, and occasional panic attacks for getting her this far.

Avery Wilburn - (barfly) is a freshman at Memorial High School and played Hawking Clam in the Memorial production of Peter and the Starcatcher. She has really enjoyed Memorial theatre and can’t wait to continue acting. Avery would like to thank her family for all of their support!

Andrew Ziegenhorn - (Jim) is a sophomore at Memorial. He has previously been in Zombie Prom and Mary Poppins, both in the ensemble. He is excited to be a part of this production.
