May 2013 Volume 10, Issue 2 Editorial note In ThIs Issue W hile waiting to be enchanted by the food, the wine and the French at- mosphere as well as insightful discus- sions and presentations in Bordeaux for the ECPR General Conference in Sep- tember 2013, the Executive Committee of the Standing Group on Organised Crime has kept working on building its network as well as con- firming its reputation and commitment. Much in this newslet- ter’s spirit to provide a forum for current de- bates, Mexican scholar Nelson Arteaga joins in with an increasing number of voices – statemen and scholars alike – casting doubt on the sense of a militarised strat- egy against drugs production and traffick- ing. Jürgen Storbeck, drawing on decades of experience as one of Eu- rope’s leading law enforcement officials, finds that efforts to combat Organised Crime have not been in vein – albeit much improvement remains to be done. Identified by Europol’s founding director as crucial in this context, our methodol- ogy series continues exploring ways to data access. As part of the methodology focus in the current issue, Falko Ernst refers to his research on Mexican Organised Crime to suggest that close-up empirical research might be feasible in a larger number of cases than gen- erally assumed. Last but not least, a first hand interview with Italia n Anti-mafia Prosecutor Alessandra Cerreti sheds light on the increasingly noted phenome- non of the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta pro- posing a very interesting point of view on how to approach this threat.
