Region 8 Opportunities

1) Interest in a slate of standards education workshops in R8 in 2011, focused on the practicing engineer

–To be funded by SA SESB, EA, and R8–Organized and promoted with help from local Sections

“Demystifying IEEE Standards” model to be used for these workshops–Part 1, IEEE Standards (including process, participation, case study)–Part 2, Segment on chosen technology area (telecom, SG, cloud computing)–Part 3, Content from local standards organizations, invited by the SA to participate

If SEC approves next step, need to develop full proposal, budget, operational plan

2) R8’s Industry Continuing Education Development (ICED) has a functioning speakers bureau and is interested in collaborating with SESB.

–Possibly in connection with the above workshops

Region 1 Opportunity

Collaborate with R1, PES, IEEE Future Directions Committee, and possibly others on Smart Grid-related conferences.

Conferences would include a Smart Grid for Practitioners (SG4P) track, and SEC is being asked to contribute a 4-hour tutorial, possibly a panel discussion, or workshop.

Two venues in development:– Buffalo, NY, October 2011. Renewable Energy Conference. Partnering with

SUNY, Stony Brook. – NYC in March 2012. Stony Brook Advanced Energy Conference at NY Hilton.

IEEE will provide both practical and academic tracks in collaboration with NYU-Polytech.

Feedback and best practices from these may be used to to create a Smart Grid for Practitionersmini-conference in Rio de Janiero later in 2012.

Initial model is for Future Directions Committee budget to cover the travel and honoraria for SA presenter(s) and, in the absence of other donors or benefactors, the attendees would cover the cost of breaks and meals plus the CEU charge from Educational Activities (about $75/day) for a two day event.
