TECHNICAL COMMUNIQUE IMPORTANT ENERGY MANAGEMENT STANDARD (SANS 50001) PUBLISHED More and more countries around the world are realizing the importance of improving energy efficiency. It is far cheaper to save energy, and use what is saved for growth, than to build new power stations. ISO 50001, Energy management systems – Requirements with guidance for use is a new international standard covering energy management, and is thus of vital significance in helping improve energy efficiency. To help South African industry and organizations improve their energy efficiency – and thus lessen their energy usage and electricity expenses – this standard has been adopted and recently published as a South African national standard, SANS 50001.

Irma Loots, Manager of Systems and Services Standards at the SABS, commented on its importance as follows: “SANS 50001 establishes a framework for industrial plants; commercial, institutional, and governmental facilities; and entire organizations to manage energy. Targeting broad applicability across national economic sectors, it is estimated that the standard could influence up to 60 % of the world’s energy use”, she concluded.

“This standard will provide public and private sector organizations with management strategies to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs and improve energy performance. Companies already with ISO 14000 certification will be able to incorporate working to SANS 50001 with relative ease. “The standard forces senior management to integrate energy management into core business operations, as energy management practice is core to the minimisation of wastage at plants and factories” said Dr Tsakani Mthombeni, of SANS TC 242, Energy management. ISO 50001 has the same underlying system (plan-do-check-act) as the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards that many companies have based their quality management (ISO 9001) and environmental management (ISO 14001) systems on, and can be integrated with quality management and environmental systems. Specifies the requirements for thread form, dimensions, tolerances and designation for jointing pipe threads, sizes 1/16 to 6 inclusive, forjoints made pressure-tight by the mating of the threads. These threads are taper external, parallel internal or taper internal and are intended for use with pipes suitable for threading and for valves, fittings or other pipeline equipment interconnected by threaded joints.

Specifies the particular requirements for construction, test and marking for electrical equipment that provides equipment protection leve(EPL) Ga. This electrical equipment, within the operational parameters specified by the manufacturer, ensures a very high level of protection that includes rare faults related to the equipment or two faults occuring independently of each other.

Specifies general requirements for the design, construction, testing and marking of electrical apparatus protected by any recognizedsafeguard technique for use in areas where combustible dust may be present in quantities that could lead to a fire or explosion hazard. Specifies the criteria to be used for the categorization and conformity assessment and the selection of health and safety standards ofpressure equipment (metallic and non-metallic) for use by but limited to the manufacturer, users, certification bodies and approved inspection authorities. It is also applicable to the certification, re-certification, modification or repair of pressure equipment (metallic and non- metallic), as defined by the relevant statutory regulations for pressure equipment.

Describes the characteristics and methods of application of unique identification carriers, called microdots, to vehicles and also theprocesses required to ensure the integrity, authenticity and confidentiality of the entire microdot production, supply, storage and application systems.

Amended to add an informative annexure on the weight and size requirements of frameless shower panels and doors.

Gives limit values for common air pollutants to ensure that the negative effects of such pollutants on human health are prevented or reduced. Limit values given in this standard are expressed for common pollutants as are permissible frequencies by which limit values may be exceeded.

Specifies three methods for the quantitative determination of the material extractable fron raw rubbers, both natural and synthetic, and theirunvulcanized and vulcanized compounds.
