Even though they didn’t have much, they were happy, and I could sense the appreciation they had for what we were doing. The children would follow us around and whether it was a little song, or playing some game, it was rewarding to hear one from the group that could speak a little English. They would say, ‘you make them happy, you make me happy.’ That’s when you knew communication was not a barrier and that joy and happiness is something we can all share. I learned that we are very bless- ed with the things we have and that even with those blessings, happiness doesn’t come through worldly possessions. Though we may live miles apart, we all live in the same world and if in some small way we can offer hope and a brighter future for others, it is a special opportunity to be able to help in some small way. We are all children of a supreme creator and He desires for us to help and serve others in any way we can. It was a lot of hard work, building in 100% humidity weather, but it was worth it, and it was a very rewarding experience.” For 50 years, NRECA International has provided men, women and children in developing coun- tries with access to safe, reliable and affordable electricity. huntsman world senior games

You probably didn’t know that when Mike Avant is not managing the en-gineering department, he and his wife enjoy competing in Cowboy Action Matches. They’ve competed in competitions since 1990 and helped start the local gun club called the North Rim Regulators in Kanab. Mike and his wife Carla help organize a 3-day cowboy action shoot with Western Leg-ends attracting hundreds of people from all over the western United States. The cowboy action matches involve shooting old west style cowboy guns including, Colt Peacemakers, Winchester rifles, Single Shot Sharps, and High Wall long range rifles out to 800 yards with iron sights. One of Mike’s favorite events is shooting old cap and ball revolvers and single shot rifles with black powder. They started competing in the Huntsman World Senior games the first year it was offered over eleven years ago, and have lost track of all the medals, trophies, and plaques they have won over the years.

Scott Grundy- volunteer fireman -

You probably didn’t know that when Scott Grundy is not maintaining the Wayne County electrical distribution system, he is volunteering his time as a fireman and search & rescue specialist. Scott has been on the Wayne County volunteer fire department for 22 years, and has been involved in high angle search & rescue efforts for over 6 years. High angle rescue consists of time consuming training involving rapelling, rock climbing, and specialized ava-lanche courses. Their crew covers the vast Robbers Roost area, Capitol Reef National Park, the slot canyons of Lake Powell, and everywhere in between. They spent hours and hours searching for Aron Ralston, who was stuck in Blue John Canyon in rural eastern Wayne County for over 5 days. Aron’s story was made into a blockbuster movie called 127 hours. Grundy says “it’s very challenging and time consuming, but very rewarding.”

Garkane Welcomes Two New Board Members

Chad Williams District #2

Preston Barlow District #11

Chad Williams replaces Trent Hunt as the winner of the district #2 election held in April. The re-sults were announced at the 2015 Annual Meeting in Bicknell, UT. Chad is the owner of Boulder Mtn. Electric and has been an electrical contractor for the past 18 years. He has served on the Wayne County Volunteer Fire Dept., Wayne Coun-ty Search & Rescue, High Angle Rope Rescue, the Wayne County Noxious Weed board, and has held various positions as a member of the LDS Church and Boy Scouts of America. He is married to Stepha-nie and has two daughters.

Preston Barlow was voted in as the replacement for Tyler Barlow, due to Tyler’s resignation from the board in 2015. A special election was held to fill the vacancy for the final year on Tyler Barlow’s three year term. Pres-ton is a Journeyman Electrician and has served as a paramedic for the last 17 years. Preston has served on the Arizona Strip Landfill Corporation board, and currently serves on the Reliance Electric Board of Directors, while also serving on the Colorado City Fire Department. Preston has a family of 13 that shares a wonderful love together. (0000291503)

5Kelsey Barnes of Garkane Energy Attends The NRECA 2015 DC Youth Tour

Kelsey being goofy with Representative Bishop

Kelsey (2nd from right) in front of the White House Attending the broadway play Newsies at the Kennedy Event Center

More than 1,700 young co-op members from across the country attended the DC Youth Tour in June. Kelsey Barnes of Church-wells, UT was selected and spon-sored by Garkane Energy to at-tend the weeklong adventure. Kelsey was fortunate to visit Mt. Vernon, the Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Iwo Jima nation-

al monuments’, the Smithsonian Institute Museums, the National Archives, and to walk the halls of the Library of Congress. She had the privilege to sit down and chat with Congressman Rob Bishop as he gave her party a private tour of the nations Capitol. Congressmen Chris Stewart also took the time to meet with her.

“My experience in Washington D.C. with the youth group was an incredible adventure. This experience went beyond all I had imagined in anticipation. America’s history has now come to life for me. During the D.C. tour I was continually making connections with all the monuments, memorials, and museums to the history classes I had taken back at home. I walked in the same buildings, down the same stairs, and through the same halls as our forefa-thers. It took me this journey through America’s past, to join our forefathers in the work for America’s future. I now realize all that

I have in America, as I join in to support it. There is a quote in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial where he states, “The structure of world peace cannot be the work of one man, or one party, or one nation…it must be a peace which rests on the cooperative effort of the whole world.” - Kelsey Barnes

The Board’s func-tion is to provide general pol-icy direction for management and to oversee the activities of the cooperative to protect its financial soundness, to insure that member interests are protected and promoted, and to provide a vision for its future. The Board only hires one employee--the General Manager--although the Board may consult on the employ-ment of upper management personnel. Carl Boyd Jr., Board President

I would like to begin this feature with a brief look at the Board of Directors and its role in the management of

co-op, the status of major work projects, and on legislative and regulatory issues affecting Garkane. The present Board rep-resents a good combination of experience and new ideas. Six of the eleven directors have joined the Board in the last ten years, but, conversely, six of the eleven directors have served three or more full terms. The mixture keeps the Board cognizant of the development of the institution over the last thirty years--where we have been--as well as providing new

Board members who bring a fresh look of the future--where we might be going. We encourage members of Garkane to establish con-tacts with “their” Director and to attend our Annual Meeting held each year in April to meet the other Board members, and to be informed on our progress and activities.

The light-emitting diode (LED) is one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly developing lighting tech-nologies. Quality LED light bulbs last longer, are more durable, and offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting. LED is a highly energy efficient lighting technology, and has the potential to fundamen-tally change the future of lighting in the United States. Residential LEDs -- especially ENERGY STAR rat-ed products -- use at least 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting. Garkane En-ergy realizes this poses a significant investment to our customers, and, we want to help. Garkane is offering a 30% rebate as a bill credit on LED light bulb purchases. Simply purchase LED light bulbs and take the receipt to your local office, or email a copy of the receipt to:[email protected]. This offer is open to all Garkane Energy customers. Please allow up to 2 billing cycles to see your credit posted on your account.
