Revision on Responsibilities, Small Sided Games and Principles of
Play
The following slides are to assist you with your homework and to help reinforce the areas that we have covered.
Your homework should be related to Basketball as much as possible when you give your answers.
The examples given here are to aid learning; try to come up with your own working and answers. It will help you to understand it better.
Defenders (defending) plays just an important part in a game as attackers (attacking) does.
• When you are a defender you have responsibilities. If you carry these responsibilities out then you will have a greater chance of being successful in chosen sporting activity.
Activity: Hockey First responsibility of defender: I have to
close down the player with the ball as quickly as possible to put them under pressure.
Second responsibility of defender: I have to mark the attacker who doesn’t have the ball tightly so that they find it hard to receive a pass.
Activity: Football First responsibility of Attacker: I made a
diagonal run away from my team-mate who had the ball, this created space for them to dribble into with the ball.
Second responsibility of Attacker: As the football is played up to me, it is my responsibility to shield the ball from the defenders and allow supporting players to get up and attack.
Small sided games have many benefits in helping us to improve.
Activity: Badminton The number of decisions that I have to make are
reduced i.e. Playing half court singles means that I have to only think about moving my opponent forward and back.
Activity: Volleyball Playing 2v2 allows me to have more touches of the
ball and develop my skills.
Activity: Rugby I have more opportunity to play different positions
and everyone has a greater chance to stay involved
Another factor that relates to all sports is that:
The teacher can identify problems with execution of different skills and techniques more easily.
When we take part in team games its vital that we apply the principles of play to attacking and defending to ensure that we have the best chance possible of getting success.
We have 4 main areas that we can use to our advantage during team games.
Width in Attack Depth in Attack Delay in Defence Depth in Defence
Width in Attack Players spreading out across the area to
pull defenders out and create space for play in the middle.
Depth in Attack Players spreading out the length of the
area to create passing options/support for each other.
Delay in Defence Player puts pressure on the ball carrier to
provide more time for team-mates to reorganise.
Depth in Defence 2nd defender moves behind the first
defender to cover/support them if they are beaten.
Relate all your answers to Basketball.
Put all your answers in to your own words!
