Stand Up! Road map

• Community mapping: assessing resources your community has and the needs of your community • Ex. LA. Have a littering problem, have organizations that deal with that

problem so that is a need and a resource

• Jewish values: finding what Jewish aspect your cause has to do with• Ex. Littering tikun olam

• Issue/cause: the thing you are standing up for and your council should be passionate about it

• Agencies/organization: who you partner with.. This organization is not your cause, it is your partner.

Main Stand Up! tips

• Make it viral: (viral: rapid spread of information). Possibly make a documentary of everything that is happening and put it on youtube to explain the cause and what is going on

• Keep it organized: make Stand Up! Something atlanta council really needs

• Work together: include all members of board and not just the sh’licha/shaliach

Page 8: Stand Up! conference call

Example • Jackson Block:• Said you need a personal connection with

everyone in council• You want it to be interesting for members so see

what they are passionate about• Stand Up! September• Had advocacy week – Put things on fb– Garage sales– Community service

Philanthropy• Set goals! (long and short term)• Program as fundraiser= bake sale• Fundraiser as part of program= bringing clothes to sell during program or having

donation box• For events where you ask to give money (ex. Auction) invite entire community• Be create, have fun!• Get ideas from all members, not just board• When ask for donations, make sure to explain what it is for• Make sure members are passionate about what they are donating/raising money

for• I shared about Metukahs program idea for having the kickball tournament called

“save 2nd base”• Be aware of everyone’s calendar

– Ex. Someone had to cancel a program because they scheduled it in the same day and time as the SATs were for many kids

Direct Service

• Place doesn’t need to be Jewish• Maybe have Stand Up! Committee• Always use connections• ex:If go to hospital, they may only need 15

members. So when promoting, don’t say that everyone can come. Have RSVP list

• # of people x by # of hours= how many hours of community service– 6 people for 5 hours= 30 hours of community service

Example of Direct Service• Baltimore Council- homelessness/hunger• Partnered with organization called something like “Get

back on your feet”• These homeless people would do a warmup run every

Saturday (pun= getting back on feet for running and for starting life over.. Punny stuff!) and then they would do a marathon race about twice a year

• People from this council would go to where they met to run every Saturday morning and would help them warm up

• Then they would go support them for their marathon race• People actually connected with the the homeless runners

and it was very rewarding for them

Advocacy• Do advocacy like 10 different ways, not just one• Can reach out to a lot of people through internet• “everyone wear pink”- people will ask about why youre wearing pink• Month 3- small event• Month 4- big event• Month 5- advocate to people outside of bbyo and show them how many

people came to events- Ex. “We had a big event last month and X amount of people came! You should

also help out”• Make it community wide, not only Jews • At end, party for anyone who has helped you out and show progress to

show how much you got accomplished• People who donated will be happy that they donated to something that

actually made progress

Page 38: Stand Up! conference call

Example

• People waited in elevators at city council and then when the important people came in the elevator, the bbyo people would tell them about their cause and ask about it

• The important people cant walk away because they are in an elevator!
