1. Have an annual plan. An annual plan is one of the critical success factors of a wellbeing program. Adhoc event or even a health week do not produce any results and would end up costing you time – and without a sustained commitment your staff would just see your initiatives as gimmicks or random activities which do not achieve the true results. Develop quarterly themes to keep the programme fresh and engaging.

2. Set a benchmark.

Start your wellbeing programme with a simple health assessment will help you create a benchmark, so that you can measure program impact, relevance and improvements .

3. Make it informative and fun. Successful programs will sub-consciously change your staff’s behaviour – so focus on regular informative events and seminars. Create some fun activities too and try something others may not have tried before (e.g. laughing yoga is quite popular at the moment!). Take small steps – it is not possible to suddenly get your colleagues to train for a marathon if they do not even go walking!

4. Provide rewards and incentives. Make the program about offers, incentives and rewards too! Don’t just provide a discount to a local gym membership as your main event. Offer some “indulgence “ style benefits too for reward. Wellbeing doesn’t have to be all about exercise and healthy food. Some lifestyle indulgences like a holiday or a trip to Disneyland with a discount are also part of the perks you can consider.

5. Get feedback. The best way to know if your programs are working is to get feedback from your staff. Do some focus groups, online surveys and simple feedback forms to help you fine tune your program to suit your staff’s needs and expectations.

Adopting the NEWSTART® principles, an evidence based, proven results methodology for wellness.

The NEWSTART® program originated from the Weimar Institute of California, and is advocated by renowned doctors and scientists. Experience from the US program shows that 50% of patients with hypertension in the NEWSTART program have seen their blood pressure return to normal within 3 weeks.50% of those suffering from angina also reported complete relief from symptoms after 3 weeks. About 80% of those with painful diabetic neuropathy have seen their symptoms totally relieved, and many with high triglyceride levels found their levels dropped significantly after being on the NEWSTART® program. The Adventist Healthy Team 20 Model.

Too often statistical reports were given to corporate leaders regarding how many participants attended the wellness programs, and/or how many programs were conducted in a certain period of time. Not often did leaders receive reports regarding how many staff had reverted their blood sugar level to normal, or how many staff with high blood pressure, had kept their blood pressure under control without medication for certain periods of time. Activity-oriented reports fail to capture the solid results achieved by the wellness programs. The core value of Adventist Wellbeing Solution focuses on the positive health change and outcomes of the staff. The Adventist Wellbeing Solution uses the Healthy Team 20 (HT20) Model to monitor lifestyle change in a progressive manner, and this change has proven sustainable. It centers on the evidence-based concept that behavior change is difficult. Progressive change begins with the 5% of the target population of the normal distribution curve or Gaussian distribution, taking time to influence the next 15% of the normal curve to reach a 20%. The law of the vital few 20/80 Pareto principle is to become a movement for change in the corporation. It is therefore recommended that a corporation aims at 20% of its staff to begin a healthy lifestyle behavior change experience. The process is monitored for at least 6 months. The measurable outcomes both objectively and subjectively will be reported. Corporate staff who participated in the Healthy Team 20 will become leaders or coaches of a sustainable healthy lifestyle in the corporation.

Longevity and Adventists.

For about 150 years, Adventists have been health promoters, first in the United States, then Europe, and, by the early 1900s, throughout the world. They have worked to establish hospitals and clinics and to raise community awareness on health. Their lifestyle may represent a solution to the health problems of modern society. A special report by National Geographic magazine (Buettner, 2005) noted Adventists among the population groups with the longest longevity in the world. This report grew out of research funded by the U.S. National Institute on Aging. 「新起點」(NEWSTART®)八大健康原則起源自美國加州威瑪學院,由著名的醫生和科學家倡導,經實踐證明,能有效促進健康。其名字由八個英文詞語的首個字母組成,代表八項健康原則:

美國的實驗顯示,參加為期二十一日的「新起點」計劃後,半數高血壓患者的血壓回到正常水平,半數胸口痛患者病情顯著改善,八成因糖尿病導致神經痛的患者其痛楚得到抒解。

我們的「企業健康良方」就是依據這八大原則,為企業員工訂立健康生活方式,以收效果。

為員工舉辦健康活動後,很多公司的管理層往往只收到一份量化的工作報告,告訴他們多少人出席了哪些活動,或者活動計劃共舉辦了多少次。公司根本不知道員工從活動中有沒有得益,例如有沒有改善血壓,或者控制好血糖等等。港安「企業健康良方」以改善員工健康為本,而非着重活動多寡。

港安「企業健康良方」運用「健康團隊20」的模式,督導員工逐步改善健康。改變可以從5%的員工開始,由他們影響身邊的15%,再增加至20%。參加者或需拿出決心改變一些

生活習慣,雖然有一定難度,但最終可以推動整間公司的健康生活文化。

根據統計學觀點,這是利用了正態分佈(Normal distribution)和「帕累托法則」 (Pareto principle,又稱「二八定律」) ,來協助員工面對轉變,建立良好的生活習慣。企業首先針對20%員工,以六個月時間跟進他們的健康指標。這20%員工隨後會成為教練,協助其他同事跟隨,最終為整間公司帶來改變。

復臨信徒的長壽祕訣一百五十年來,復臨信徒一直致力推廣健康。由美國開始,再到歐洲,至19世紀初期,足跡已遍及世界各地。他們在全球開設醫院和醫療中心,提高社會對健康的警覺性,並以身作則。他們的生活習慣有很多值得我們借鏡。

《國家地理雜誌》於2005年刊登了一篇特別報導,引述美國國家衞生研究院老年研究所的調查,指出復臨信徒是全世界最長壽的羣體之一。另有多項研究也顯示,復臨信徒的生活習慣與長壽有關(Belloc & Breslow,1972;Breslow & Enstrom,1980; Doblmeier & Juday,2010;Fraser,2003)。
