1.Collect: ALL contact information during your first session/meeting.  Simple and basic business 101 right?  Yes. Are you doing this on a regular basis?

A few ideas of information to collect: • Full name • Mailing Address • Phone numbers (cell, home, and work)• E-mail • Date of Birth

2. Connect: Learn something personal about your client and keep it in their files. Ask about their family, hobbies, do they have children, what are their favorite foods, holidays. Here are a few examples...

•Two young children •Four grown children and

three grandchildren •Travels in the summer •Loves Mexican food! •Hates doing squats •Loves yoga •Going through renovation •Recently divorced •Does not eat oatmeal (i.e. therefore do not suggest

oatmeal for breakfast ;)).

3. Follow Up: Follow up is key. Let your client know you enjoyed meeting them at their first visit. Share how excited you are to help them reach their goals. Thank them for their business. This simple act will create a “connection” with you and your client. Follow up with: • a hand written note • a gift book (such as “The Little Black Book

of Foodspirations®”) • an e-mail • a phone call • a text message • create a follow up system; one idea is to

schedule follow ups at various time intervals (1 week, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and then every 6 months)

“Spend 80% of your time nurturing current relationships and offering products and services they can use, and the other 20% on generating new leads.” - Sales Coach, Chuck Bauer

Do the simple stuff on a regular basis. The simple stuff will transform to the big stuff.

TRUE STORY: Here is a personal story of a business implementing all of these marketing points into their business, but failed at being genuine and real when it came to the people factor.

My six year old daughter wanted to take Karate lessons. We went to the “introductory” session and I must say, I was very impressed. The studio was clean, and the instructor made a very good first impression. My daughter finished her session with a huge smile on her face and looked like she grew an inch from the boost in her confidence. I WAS SOLD! Even though the studio was a little expensive and required us to attend class twice a week, my daughter had so much fun in her introductory session that I knew signing her up was the right thing to do.

The following night was the first official Karate class. My daughter was so excited! She went to bed early the night before, ate an extra healthy breakfast (to be strong and full of energy for Karate), and even drew the instructor a picture that she gave before class started. We arrived at class early and the room was packed. The instructor that loved my daughter so much yesterday barely had time to say “hello.” And the sweet picture my daughter drew her was quickly glanced at and placed down (I am a business owner myself, I get it - she was busy), but the 6 year old client did not get it, she was already starting to feel a little less special in this Karate class.

Class started and there were about 7 groups with 4 - 5 kids in each group. There were 3 instructors, plus the head instructor we met at our introductory session. Nobody welcomed the 6 year old client to her first class. About 10 minutes into the class, my daughter hit the punching “dummy” a little too hard and hurt her hand. She started crying and ran over to me. Nobody acknowledged her. The head instructor walked right pass us. We sat on the side line for another 20 minutes, nobody came up to us to see how she was doing.

We left and never returned.

Two days later we received a hand written note in the mail thanking us for coming to class. We also received a phone call , an email, and an e-newsletter. But none of this matters to us because even if it was a one time occurrence for this particular business, they forgot that they were in the people business.

3 Design +Branding TipsBy Stephanie Weibring

Start strong. As a new business owner, it’s tempting to cut corners and start out as lean as possible. My advice is to take the proper time (& money) to get your business branded from head to toe. The key is to look professional from the get go. It shouldn’t cost much, but logo design, business card design, website & social media should all be a priority. You can always tweak later, but you can never get a second chance to make a great first impression!

Be true to you.A key to being successful is to be authentic. Your company needs to be a direct reflection of you. Colors, type and style will help create an inviting environment for perspective customers. If your target market is women, bold, masculine colors & design just won’t do! Be original and stay true to you.

Color:Color is key. There is no right or wrong color, but bright and bold do sell! If you are drawn to natural, muted tones, add a

POP of color here and there to stand out!

Type Style:Typography is a great way to be original. Use several different fonts to create a look that expresses your vision. Keep it to 2-3 fonts when designing to prevent looking unorganized.

Pattern: Use pattern as a way to spice things up! Backgrounds on your website or social media social media pages are a great way to add life to your look/

brand. Adding patterns to the back of a business card or business stationery is a great way to keep things looking professional, while still adding your unique style!

Change is good.Once you have decided on a look and a feel, there is no reason you can’t tweak and keep evolving. You as a person will do this naturally, as will your company/practice. Don’t be afraid to update and keep things fresh, your customers will appreciate the time you take in yourself and your vision.
