STAND BY ME By Rob Reiner 1986 Theme Coming Of Age Childhood Is Important You can achieve Anything Nothing Lasts Importance of Being a good Parent Difference Between Myth and Reality Messages and Values Coming Of Age: -When Geordie makes a stand and says no one is allowed to take the body and stands up against Ace and his gang -Also when Geordie points the gun at Ace shows that they are growing up as before they would have let Ace walk all over them and get away with it, but they realise Ability to Achieve anything: -The fact that the story is flashback of Geordieʼs life as he never thought he would become a writer but yet here he is writing about events that happened between him and his best mates. -Also at the end when Chris becomes a Lawyer and thought that he would never get away from the town but he made a change for his life. Childhood Is Important: -Shows as Geordieʼs childhood affects him because he puts himself down as he never gets support from his parents and he could only rely on his older brother who died - He has flashbacks of his brotherʼs funeral and his dad saying that Geordie should have died. Which causes him to doubt him to doubt his writing skills. Importance of Being a good Parent: -Geordie is often neglected by his parents after his brother dies and do not take an interest to what he does. -Teddyʼs dad is mental, so has a strange way of looking after his son due to his mental health and this has an impact on the way Teddy is brought up. -Chrisʼ family is known for having a bad reputation, so he is accused of having that too, which makes it unfair on him because in the film we realise that he is a good kid as he is always looking out for the boys as he saves Teddy when heʼs on the train tracks and then also supports Geordie with his writing and encourages him to take it up as a Myth and Reality: -Before they set off on their journey to find the dead body, they were young and naive and thought the idea of finding a dead boy would be cool, but as they got nearer to finding the body, they realised that this wasnʼt a joke and it was a serious situation. -Their journey to finding the dead body took longer than they thought it would and they realise that its not all about getting famous and being well known. Nothing Lasts Forever: -We see a close friendship come to an end even though they said that theyʼd always stick together. -They began to see less and less of eachother as they began high school and drifted apart from each other until they lost contact completely and went seperate ways to focus on their futures. -Geordie concludes at the end that he ʻNever had friends again like how he did when he was 12ʼ Geordie: -Main Protagonist -Leader of his group -Enjoys writing and telling stories Characters Chris: -Protecter of the group, is always looking out for the others -The ʻtoughʼ one -Family has a bad reputation -Best friends with Geordie Teddy: -Feisty one of the group -Always up for a fight -Very into army things Vern: -Feminine one of the group -Very dopey -Loves food -Underdog as heʼs the one who tells the others about the dead body
