up to Facebook by claiming to be 14 then by the time they actually are 14
advertisers will be under the impression that they are 18.

Cyber-stalking- Being contacted in unwanted ways.
Often people have shared passwords with people they then break up/fall
out with.They then find accounts hacked and
hurtful messages left.

Are you aware that all manner of violent, sexual and racist material is uploaded to
YouTube?
YouTube’s ‘adult controls’ rely on users themselves to flag things up as
inappropriate, and are often highly ineffective.

filters words not images.
Therefore typing in ‘naked people’ draws a blank but a naked person
could come up in a search for something else!

Online grooming- Who am I actually talking to?
Children very bad at being discerning. Children often believe that being sent a
photo proves a person is who they claim to be.

What are the risks for children?
Online grooming- Who am I actually talking to?
Paedophiles are known to groom for months or even years
to gain trust.
An increasing amount of those being caught grooming are teenagers.

changes the password themselves so that victims can’t access
their own account and can’t even prove that it is theirs.

Consider:Remember that sites with an age limit have it for a reason! You wouldn’t sit back and
watch your child buy cigarettes!
• Set Parental Controls on BBC I-Player, 4OD and Google on your home computers.
• Set Parental Controls on Virgin/Sky TV systems.
• Monitor computer use carefully- remember how quickly sites like Google and Youtube take you to other places.
• Know which social-media sites your child uses and ensure they know the dangers.

Consider:• Take control of the games your child plays. Games are certificated 18 for a reason!
• Ensure your home computer has an up to date firewall/anti-virus/Pop-up blocker.
•Discuss E-Safety regularly and encourage your child to be open about what they are doing online.
