Mechanized stainless steel filter screens to counter water contamination by plastic in Vizag

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is planning to install stainless

steel filter screens in the city's open drains in order to prevent floating plastic waste from

entering the sea. Drains clogged with plastic waste are a major source of pollution in the sea

water. As per estimates, Vizag produces nearly 100 tonnes of plastic waste every day. The stainless

steel rotary-type trash filters automatically filter and collect waste in the drains. They are highly

efficient than the conventional screens that require manual clearing and sorting of waste. These

stainless steel filters are expected to be installed in Gnanapuram, Gajuwaka, Malkapuram, and Naval

Officers' recreational club, among other places.

hanghai Metals Market (SMM) reported that a stainless

Ssteel producer in China's south western province of

Guangxi began annual maintenance on its steel and hot

rolled coil capacity, as its revenues fell below costs in a falling market.

The overhaul is expected to affect stainless steel output by 20,000

tonnes, with #201 products accounting for the majority. SMM

learned that the mill has an annualised capacity of 470,000 tonnes.

Another stainless steel plant in Guangxi, with a capacity of 500,000

tonnes, planned to undergo maintenance for 12 days in June. This is

estimated to impact the output of #200 series by 30,000 tonnes.

Nickel extends gains amid Indonesia supply disruption

ickel prices rose further on the London Metal

NExchange as mining disruptions in key producer

Indonesia sparked supply concerns about the

stainless steel ingredient. Widespread flooding in Indonesia's

nickel hub, the island of Sulawesi, has halted some mining

operations in Indonesia, an official with the country's Nickel

Miners Association said. Three-month nickel on the London

Metal Exchange rose 0.7% to $11,950 a tonne by 0215 GMT,

extending gain from the previous session when it hit a two-

week high. Around 15 to 20 miners producing 50,000-

100,000 tonnes of nickel ore a month were affected.

1. Take us back to the beginning of your journey.

My family's roots are from a small village in Rajasthan

called Sanderao, however we had migrated to Mumbai

in the late 70's. Back then my father had lost a bangle-

making factory in Firozabad, UP and had started

dealing in scrap in Barshi in the Solapur district of

Maharashtra. As a child, I dreamt of being a cricketer.

Sunil Gavaskar has been my favourite ever since.

However, destiny had other plans for me. I completed

my graduation in Commerce from Mumbai University

in 1991. With my father's persistence and the hard work

put in by my brothers, what started as a mere scrap

dealing business went on to take the shape of Mehta

Trading Corporation (MTC) in 1974. After my

graduation, it was time for me to take up the baton

from my father and join the family business with my

brothers. I took on the challenge and moved to

Bangalore for a couple of years to set up our office.

Later on, we diversified our product line which was

originally limited to trading cast iron and mild steel

scrap. As of today, MTC Group is a four-decade old

business group with domestic and international

business operations in scrap, ferro-alloys, and base

metals, along with automobiles dealerships and more.

The group also plays an important role in providing raw

materials to the metal recycling industry in India and

the world.

2. What are the noteworthy milestones of your

business?

Our journey of the past four decades has been full of

challenges. But, today I can proudly say that we have

grown manifold and are currently a USD 1.3 billion

turnover group company. In the last 15 years, we have

diversified into various product lines, from being a

basic scrap recycling company to trading and

commencing manufacturing activities for base

metals, minor metals, noble alloys, etc. as well. We

have also successfully installed forward and backward

integration in our processes with steel plants

producing TMT bars and setting up of a power plant,

respectively. Also, we have recently added another

product line of Copper tubes with a manufacturing

Jindal Stainless unveils India's first stainless steel E-rickshaw prototype

s part of its new business development initiative towards sustainable transportation, Jindal Stainless,

Aalong with local manufacturers in Haryana, successfully developed the first stainless steel E-rickshaw

prototype in India. The E-rickshaw design was lauded at EvExpo 2019 organised in Lucknow from June

6-8, 2019. Various stainless steel grades have been suggested by the company for E-rickshaw body parts; Grade

304 for chassis and roof, Grade JT and 430 for side panels, and Grade 304 chequered for flooring. Each of these

E-rickshaws uses around 80-100 kg of stainless steel, and can be developed in just one day.

Jindal stainless assisted the development of these E-rickshaws by providing the technical know-how, welding

and tube bending techniques for stainless steel, and expert advice on grade selection and raw material sourcing

to Haryana based manufacturers- JIJO Electrics and Thukral Electric Bikes. An order of 100 stainless steel

E-rickshaws is now in pipeline with these two manufacturers.

The originally used mild steel E-rickshaws are heavy, have a life cycle of around 3 years, and often face chassis

breakage. However, the stainless steel models demonstrate a superior body and chassis performance, and an

extended life cycle of around 5 years, along with reducing the overall weight by 15-20%. The reduced weight also

enhances the battery life, and in turn the efficiency of E-rickshaws. Moreover, the scrap value for stainless steel is

around Rs 100/kg, while it is Rs 20/kg for mild steel. This promises additional returns after the end-of-life of

stainless steel e-rickshaws.

it is estimated that around 6 lakh E-rickshaws are produced annually in India (including an import of around 2

lakh E-rickshaws). As an accessible, economical, and the last mile connectivity vehicle, E-rickshaw serves as the

optimum bread earner for a majority of Indian population in both urban and rural areas. Going forward, Jindal

Stainless plans to tie-up with pan-India E-rickshaw manufacturers.

indal Stainless (Hisar) Limited (JSHL) boasts of

Jthe largest specialty stainless steel division in

India. Specialty Products Division (SPD) is a

specialized state-of-the-art facility, established with

a view to expand the company's product portfolio

and services in precision strip, blade steel, and mint

segments in the domestic as well as export markets.

In line with JSHL's vision to consistently improve by

innovating, the SPD took on some in-house activity

enhancements that led to the highest ever rolling

production of 78,689 MT in FY 18-19, along with the

highest dispatch, reported at 30,964 MT.

The SPD team took on series of steps to make it all

possible. First, the team set up an offline rewinding

line between the Sherman mills 1 and 2, two of the ten

mills installed in the SPD. Pressure pads were

installed between payoff reels of these two adjacent

mills that helped utilize this set up for an offline

rewinding, in turn avoiding time loss due to

rewinding pass at mills. This 100% in-house project

upped the productivity of the mill by ~18%.

Second, the team introduced a system for the filter

cleaning standard operating practises (SOPs) in a

structured way to avoid downtimes due to poor quality

of the product. The frequency of cleaning filters at two

of the mills has been optimized, which is now part of

the division's guidelines. Moreover, extra bucket filters

at five of the division's mills were installed to set up an

efficient cooling system. These filters helped in

checking any possible contamination in oil running in

the return line of the cooling system. Additionally, extra

headers were also provided at mills to increase coolant

flow. This also helped reduce the frequency of roll

changing, thus increasing the division's productivity.

Third, the team worked to reduce the work roll

changeover time by means of a roll changing trolley. It

helped to reduce the coil set-up time by nearly 22% at

RM 1 and 33% at RM 2 mills of the division.

It is noteworthy that these in-house advancements

incurred minimal or zero costs, and have increased the

SPD's productivity by over 11%.
