Staging Synergy: Combining the old and the new in Philippine theater

Perso nally, I am amazed by thea ter productions tha t mix the old and the new . That is, making use of
traditional elements like music, dance a nd langua ge a nd skillfully fusing these with the modern w orld
as we know it.
Two of my favorites are college productions Orosman at Zafira by theater group Dulaang UP and
Sintan g Dalisa y by the ate r group Ta ngha lang Ate neo .
Dulaang UPs Orosman at Zafira
Oro sman a t Zafira is a co nte mporary a dap tatio n of the w ork of Francisco Baltaz ar, the King of
Tagalog poets. It is the story of war, fighting and po wer-grabbing be tween the Marruecos, Tedenstand Dugue la tribes. Two p eople fall in love in the middle of all this fightinga w oman named Zafira and
a man named Orosman.
Wha t I love about this play is the w ay it highlights Philippine heritage in its use of ethno-linguistic
music as w ell as the mix of modern and trad itional dance movements. The w hole performance hits the
heart hard with its intensity. Watch the Youtube excerpt below:
Tanghalang Ateneos Sintang Dalisay Sintan g Dalisa y is an a da pta tion of G.D. Rokes 1 901 a wit (so ng) called Ang Sintan g Dalisa y ni
Julieta a t Romeo and Roland o Tinios trans lation of William Shakespe ares Romeo a nd Juliet.
The play is set in the fictional Muslim community of Sampurna, wh ere tw o lead ing clans of the Musta fas
and the Kalimuddins are perpetually engaged in generations of fighting and of mutual hate. Like the
story of Romeo and Juliet, two main characters Ras hiddin and Jamila defy their families orde rs as they
fall in love and get married in se cret. Their marriage is short-lived, how ever, as the y were forced to
separate when Rashiddin killed someone from the Kalimuddin clan as a way of getting revenge on the
death of his cousin. All ended well and good, though, when the two feuding families reconciled
eventually.
Whats nice about this play is how it made use of igal, a traditional dance of the Sama people in
Mindanao, the southern part of the Philippines.

According to MCM Santamaria, PhD in her essa y Igal: Dance of the Southe rn Seas , igal is considere d
by dance scholars as having the richest dance vocabulary among the dance traditions in the
Philippines. This is because the igal is laden with postures and gestures which highlight the
graceful movement of the fingers, wrists a nd arms, which is reminiscent of gentle sea wa ves.
This Philippine dance also echoes Classical Cambodian, Thai and Balinese dances. Watch this short igal
performance to see how:
