Chita Rivera has thrilled the world of musical theater with a career spanning more than half a century . . .

10 QUESTIONS

Chita Riverawith Tony® Award Winning Broadway Legend

Photo by by Laura Marie Duncan

Page 5: Stagepass Jan Feb 2014

. . . SHE HAS CREATED ONE ICONIC ROLE AFTER ANOTHER, including Anita in West Side Story, Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie and Velma Kelly in Chicago.

In 2002, she became the first Latin-American to receive the Kennedy Center Honors award. In 2009, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her advice to aspiring dancers and singers? Just this: “Love what you do. Be strong in what you do. Be proud of what you do.”

We talked with Chita Rivera during the holidays. The conver-sation turned to her new show coming to Folsom, cooking, and of course, performing on stage.

Q. YOU’VE CREATED A NUMBER OF ICONIC BROADWAY CHARACTERS. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITES? That’s hard. It’s like you’ve got 15 kids and being asked which is your favorite!

It was a great, great experience to do all these characters. West Side really gave us all a jump. So I guess I have to give Anita a nod, but it’s not really my favorite.

Kiss of the Spider Woman was a blast. It was fabulous to play a movie star and have a bunch of fabulous dancing boys. Rob Marshall choreo-graphed it. That was an amazing experience.

Chicago was also an amazing experience. When you’re from what they call “The Golden Age,” every theater had a hit in it. I was there. So each show was a great, great, great experience.

Q. YOU WORKED WITH SOME LEGENDARY CHOREOGRAPHERS—

JEROME ROBBINS, BOB FOSSE, GOWER CHAMPION, MICHAEL KIDD, JACK COLE. ANY FAVORITE STORIES?I remember walking past Jerry when he was about to kill one of the boys, and just quietly saying to him, “Don’t do it.”

He fell out of his chair laughing and said, “How did you know that?” I said, “I could tell from your face. You were about to kill him.” He said I saved a boy’s life that day.

Jerry Robbins and Jack Cole were, of course, really, really hard, but when you got past the fear, it was extraordinary.

Michael Kidd, if you didn’t kill yourself with all the acrobatics was phenomenal.

Q. THERE WAS A PERIOD WHERE EVERYBODY REFERRED TO YOU AS A “BROADWAY STAR.” AT SOME POINT, IT BECAME “BROADWAY LEGEND.” WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?I thought I’d died. I’m not sure how I feel about the word legend. I’m sure it’s a compliment, but you kind of feel like you’re a tale that people talk about when you’re gone.

When you’re a dancer, you’re a dancer. We’re pretty normal and natural, whatever normal is. Actually,

we don’t know what normal is. But we’re pretty natural people, and we think of today.

Q. WHAT IS IT THAT SEPARATES GOOD PERFORMERS FROM EXCEPTIONAL ONES? WHAT’S THE “IT” FACTOR?

You know Fred (Kander) and John (Ebb) wrote a great song called “It.” It was taken out of Chicago, but Gwen (Verdon) and I were able to do

it for a while in Philadelphia. It was a great song.

“It.” You’ve gotta have it. The girls without “It” just might as well quit. You’ve gotta have “It.”

And it’s something that you really can’t put your finger on. “It” is, I think, a blessing. I think “It” is that special thing that God gives people that makes them truly sparkle. They shine.

Coming from within, it’s a person that is totally dedicated, really wants to communicate, really loves what they do and loves doing it for the audience. They really appreciate having amazing, creative lyrics and words to say. It’s magic.

You can’t put your finger on it. It’s hard to describe. “It” may be quiet. “It” could be ever so quiet, but

‘‘ I think ”IT” IS THAT SPECIAL THING that GOD gives people that makes them TRULY SPARKLE. They shine.’’

5Photo by by Laura Marie Duncan

Page 6: Stagepass Jan Feb 2014

it’s “It.” You know “It” when you see it. It’s got to be controlled, too. It’s not loose and flying around. It’s kind of deliberate. “It” seems to me to be God’s plan.

Q. ARE THERE ANY RITUALS YOU HAVE EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER A PERFORMANCE?Not after. On Sunday, after would be inviting the kids into my dressing room and having mimosas. That’s a ritual on a Sunday or Saturday night.

But absolutely before every show, my dressing room is cleared, and I have a wonderful space that some might call an altar, but it’s a space I have.

A priest friend of mine gave me the Infant Jesus of Prague. It’s a beautiful statue. I say just a little prayer before I go on just so that I’m completely where I’m supposed to be and I do the show correctly and I enjoy it and I entertain the audience.

And just let me do it right, that’s all. The sweet thing is that my friends

say, “I want you to remember me.” I’m going to give you this little pig or something or this picture or this gold statute or this little angel. So when I say my prayers, all of those people are included in it.

There was this wonderful man on the street in Toronto when I was there with Kiss of the Spider Woman, and he was carving little figurines out of soap.

I saw him, and it was cold. So I said, “Let me just buy one of these so he’ll feel like he sold something today.”

‘‘ The sweet thing is that my friends say, ‘I WANT YOU TO REMEMBER ME’. . . So when I say my prayers, all of those people are INCLUDED. . . ’’

Page 8: Stagepass Jan Feb 2014

And when I got it back to the theater, I looked at it; I turned it over, and it was an angel. It was just as beautiful as it could be, just beautifully carved, and it was soap. That’s all it was.

It sits on my altar, and reminds me of that time and that little man, and it also is probably one of my many guardian angels. You know what I mean? It’s just a personal kind of thing. I have my family’s picture and things from my daughter on it.

So I’m kind of reminded of important things before I go on stage. It sounds funny when you talk about it, but – God gives you those moments that you can get away from other things and refuel your body with other spirits.

Q. I UNDERSTAND YOU ARE QUITE TALENTED IN THE KITCHEN. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR RECIPE FOR CORN PUDDING THAT PEOPLE SAY IS TO DIE FOR.That’s funny! My sister and I share it. We’re really good at it.

Corn pudding comes from my mom, and we have it only on Thanksgiving and Christmas. You put corn from the can and cover it

with Carnation milk. You sweeten it, and you put butter on the top. It’s as simple as that. And you bake it. Oh, and eggs. The eggs make the pudding.

And it’s good. But it’s sweet. It’s sweet corn. Don’t put any peppers; don’t put any onions. It’s just the corn, and you cover the corn with

the Carnation milk. Try it. It’s good.

Q. TELL ME ABOUT THE CURRENT SHOW—WHAT’S IT LIKE?The show is me telling some stories. And having worked with so many great creators, I’ve got material.

At one point there were three revivals on Broadway. All three were

originally my shows. I tell the story of walking down the street, seeing a poster and it says Bye Bye Birdie, and I think, “That’s very nice.”

Then I go a little further; there’s a

great looking blonde girl with a short black skirt straddling a chair, and it says Chicago, and I think, “Oh, that’s wow.”

And then this big old bus goes

by and it says West Side Story, and I think, “Shouldn’t I be someplace at 8:00 tonight?”

It doesn’t happen often that there are three revivals of something that you’ve done on Broadway. It’s kind of wild.

Q. TELL ME ABOUT CREATING YOUR CURRENT SHOW. OBVIOUSLY, YOU DIDN’T JUST SPEND A LITTLE TIME ON A FRIDAY NIGHT AND WHIP IT TOGETHER.No, no, no. I’ve got three great musi-cians. Michael Croiter is my conduc-

tor and also the drummer. Michael Patrick Walker is the pianist, and the third person is Jim Donica. He’s my bass player.

We sat down for a long, long time and just thought about what the rundown should be. We changed arrangements. We switched songs. And we tried to figure what numbers go best with each section. There’s a Cy Coleman section, Carousel and sort of a French thing with some-thing from Seventh Heaven and Birdie. They’re just sections and stories that go with the music. And there’s dance and movement. It’s a lot of fun.

Q. YOU’VE DONE A WIDE RANGE OF CHARACTERS ON STAGE. ARE THERE ANY CHARACTERS THAT YOU’VE SAID, “GOD, I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO PLAY THE PART OF…”We’re doing The Visit. That was a movie with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn. It was a Friedrich Dürrenmatt play years ago. And it is one of Kander and Ebb’s shows that they wrote together before Freddy passed.

It’s an extraordinary story. Karla is an extraordinary woman. I can’t wait to play that part. We’re doing it this summer up in Williamstown.

I really honestly can’t say there’s something that I want to do. I’ve been a really lucky gal. They’ve been all perfect for me. It would be pretty selfish to say, “Oh, I want to do…” because I have certainly had many great roles.

Q. IF YOU WERE TALKING TO A YOUNG PERFORMER WHO DREAMS OF PERFORMING ON BROADWAY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?

Make sure they’re true to themselves and why they want to be in the busi-ness.

First of all, they have to find out their gifts. If they want to be a dancer, they have to study. They have to have their technique, and it’s got to be serious. And if they want to sing, they’ve got to study.

Listen to your directors and your teachers. Listen.

Love what you do. Be passionate about it. Don’t strive to be a star. Just strive to be really good at what you do. What the hell is a star? Mickey Mouse is a star, a cartoon. You want to be really good and really healthy, to learn and be strong.

If you love music, and particularly if you love jazz, there is a three-concert series that you shouldn’t miss. The Harris Center has booked monthly shows which feature some of today’s most talented and innovative jazz pianists.

Stage 2: City Studio Theater is an ideal venue for intimate concerts. The seating is limited and there’s very little distance between the au-dience and performers making it a favorite for everyone.

Each of these shows has a differ-ent style and feel. But what they do have in common is that they feature world-class performers at their best.

JON WEBERFrom Joplin to Jarrett: 100 Years of Piano JazzThursday, January 23Sunday, January 26

Starting off the series is Jon We-ber. He’s described as, “A spectacu-lar solo pianist, his brilliantly crafted, spontaneous orchestrations easily place him in the rarefied company of today’s elite jazz musicians.”

The highly acclaimed show “Piano Jazz” is the longest-running cultural program on National Public Radio. It was hosted by jazz pianist Marian McPartland for more than three decades. Her hand-picked suc-cessor to host the show is Jon Weber.

His show is entitled “Joplin to Jarrett: 100 Years of Piano Jazz.” It’s

a musical journey that promises to both entertain and enlighten audi-ences.

“One of the things we will do with the show is to explore who evolved into whom,” said Weber. “We would not have any of the music we have right now had these people not come along. Music wouldn’t sound like it does. It would sound like something else.”

It promises to be both an enter-taining and an enlightening evening.

KENNY WERNERKenny Werner TrioFriday, February 14 Saturday, February 15

Kenny Werner is a world-class pianist and composer. His prolific output of compositions, recordings and publications continue to impact audiences around the world.

Quincy Jones has said of Kenny, “Perfection, 360 degrees of soul and science in one human being. My kind of musician.”

Kenny Werner’s influence is un-surpassed. He has impacted an en-tire generation of musicians and artists. Despite his creative output, Kenny is still focused on the music. “I am still more and more aware of the true purpose of the music and the people who play it to heal and unite the planet.”

CLARICE ASSADThursday, March 27 Friday, March 28

“She’s the most exciting Brazilian singer/pianist I’ve ever heard—and by a mile, too. As remarkable as Tania Maria has been for decades, she takes a definite back seat—at least, to 34-year-old singer, pianist, com-poser and arranger Clarice Assad.” (The Buffalo News)

Clarice Assad’s music is a mix of experimental, classical, pop, Brazil-ian, and jazz. Days before the shows in Folsom, her group Off the Cliff will be doing a live recording for Jazz At Lincoln Center. A few days later the Century Chamber Orchestra and the renowned vocal group Chanticleer are teaming up to perform her ar-rangements.

An evening with Clarice Assad is always guaranteed to be an interest-ing and exciting mix of sound.

IMAGINE AN INTIMATE EVENINGwith Clint Black like you’ve never seen him before. Critics from coast to coast are calling his shows the ones to remember. From “Killin’ Time” to “Taillights,” Clint Black is part of the sound track of country music.

He’s returning for three perfor-mances at the Harris Center with an all-new acoustic show.

What you get is Clint Black up close and personal. This is not the standard smoke and mirrors concert. Clint takes the stage alone and tells stories and plays and sings songs. He then brings out the rest of the trio and the show just gets better.

With his genuine, down-home manner, witty sense of humor, and charisma, audiences are discovering a full evening of fantastic entertainment.

As one recent audience member said, “When you settle in for an evening with Clint Black, get ready to immerse yourself in pure country.”

An amazingly prolific singer-songwriter, Clint Black has long been heralded as one of country music’s brightest stars. His many talents have helped shape his long career, as Black has transcended genres to become one of the most successful

artists in the entire music industry. To date, Black has written,

recorded, and released more than 100 songs; a benchmark in any artist’s career. An astounding one-third of these songs eligible for major single release also achieved hit-song status on country radio, while more than 20 million of his albums have been sold worldwide.

While it’s well known that Black is an accomplished singer and guitarist, people may be surprised to learn that he is also proficient on drums and harmonica.

Black’s continued success can be attributed in part to his deep sense of Country music history, and his

humble gratitude in being an important part of it.

The debut of his critically acclaimed fan favorite, the triple platinum “Killin’ Time,” marked a shift in the industry, with a return to the more traditional sounds of the genre. CMT lists this album as one of the 100 greatest albums in country music.

The musical Thoroughly Modern Millie comes to the local stage on Valentine’s Day

First it was an Oscar-winning Hollywood movie. Then it became a Tony Award winning Broadway show. Now, the newest production of the show will open at the Harris Center on Valentine’s Day.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a zany comic show featuring a small-town girl determined to make it in New York City in the roaring 1920s.

Thoroughly Modern Millie, the 1967 film, starred Julie Andrews, already an enormous star due to her roles in the musical films Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. She plays Mille Dillmount, a Kansas girl leaving the traditions of rural life behind to become a ‘modern’ city dweller.

The film also included Mary Tyler Moore as Miss Dorothy, just a few years before she became a mega-star. The inimitable Carol Channing

played Muzzy van Hossmere, a character as eccentric as the actress herself.

The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and five Golden Globes in 1967, and was a box office hit.

It’s a thoroughly 60s take on the 1920s, combining flapper styles with 60s chic and a new “women’s liberation” sensibility. The result is a comical yet unique story about the difficulties in resolving love and

relationships with a modern career-focused life.

We wouldn’t see a Broadway Musical version for another 25 years.

The stage show preserves the musical flavor, naive charm, and comic wit of the original movie. But, it also presents a re-vamped story and a whole lot more song and dance action for theatre audiences.

Millie arrives in New York as a

young Kansas girl dazzled by the bright lights of the big city. No sooner than she arrives, however, she is mugged and then chided by future love interest Jimmy for her naive dreams of becoming a modern city woman.

Little does he know that she has big plans for herself and the determination to see them through!

Mille finds a job as a stenographer

for Trevor Graydon III, with the full intention of first impressing, then attracting, and finally marrying him in order to secure herself a comfortable future (“a thoroughly modern goal!”).

She meets Miss Dorothy, a rich girl slumming it in the hotel where Millie boards with other modern girls, and soon a four-pointed love square dominates the action.

Meanwhile, Millie’s landlady, Mrs. Meers, and her unlucky Chinese associates are busy kidnapping young orphan women from the same hotel that she runs. She found a profitable business selling them into slavery in Hong Kong.

This strange twist adds a whole level of excitement and action, not to mention opportunities for plenty of comedy, to the already quirky show.

While the original film was a hit, time slowly covered it with cobwebs. Audences lost interest until the story was retrieved and re-worked into a musical by Jeanine Tesori with lyrics by Dick Scanlan at the end of 1999.

Production began in 2000 and a Broadway show was cast and began running in 2002. The title role was originally won by Kristin Chenoweth. When she left the show, she was eventually replaced by Sutton Foster who gained not only her first lead role on Broadway, but also a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical.

Foster’s big break with Millie propelled her to stardom, first on Broadway (Little Women, Young Frankenstein, Shrek the Musical), then in television, and now in film.

Including Foster’s acting prize,

18

Page 19: Stagepass Jan Feb 2014

19

Thoroughly Modern Millie was nominated for 10 Tony awards in 2002. It won six of them including the awards for Best Musical, Choreography, Orchestrations, and Costumes – in short, a real sweep!

While the show’s original run on Broadway ended in 2004, a West End run, UK tour, and other international productions have helped to build the profile of the show.

Packed with 17 original musical numbers, the score pushes performers to their limits. There are

swinging Vaudeville-style tunes, powerful ballads, comedy numbers, electrifying tap dance routines, and even a tongue-twisting light operatic piece “Speed Test” reminiscent of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Modern Major-General.

Even more endearing is the cast of wacky characters chasing love, fame, fortune, and happiness against the backdrop of a city bursting with both obstacles and opportunities.

In keeping with this theme of love, El Dorado Musical Theatre will

open its production of Thoroughly Modern Millie on Valentine’s Day (February 14). It features EDMT’s best and brightest cast members.

Prepare to be delighted by the comical cast of characters and thrilled by the energy of this powerful performance!

VIRALGOING

IT’S CALLED “GOING VIRAL”BECAUSE IT FOLLOWS the same pattern as an epidemic. Just like that kid in second grade who came to school with a cold, and passed it on to nearly everyone, “going viral” means that large numbers of people are sharing the video with others.

Often these videos are collections of cute kids, cute kittens, or epic failures. Occasionally they are

performances and, if they capture the fancy of the public, the “virus” begins to spread.

This phenomenon has changed the world of the performing arts. A viral video exposes the performer to millions of fans around the world. It can energize or even start a career. It can make people overnight stars.

This feature includes a collection of our current favorite performing

arts videos that have gone viral. This is not scientific nor is it based

on statistical analysis. It is based on a sampling of viral video performances we thought you’d enjoy.

Just like all the ads and the show listings in StagePass, these videos are hot linked. Just click on the image and you’ll bring up a page with the video included.

Enjoy the collection. Do you have

ANDRE RIEU AND3-YEAR OLD VIOLINIST AKIM CAMARAPart of what makes a video catch the imagination of the world and go viral is when something is unbeliev-

able, but the video shows that it is indeed true.

This is what happened when Dutch violinist and conductor Andre Rieu introduced three-year-old violinist Akim Camara during his ‘Flying Dutchman Concert’ at Parkstad Stadium in the Netherlands.

Akim is adorable and won over the audience immediately. When he began to play his 1/4 - sized violin,

hearts melted. There is something special about seeing a three-year-old stand in front of an audience of 18,000 and play. He received an enthusiastic standing ovation.

This video has earned almost 17 million views. This video link is a higher resolution, but less watched version of the performance.

CIMORELLI—MADE IN AMERICA

Local girls make good. The six singing sisters of pop sensation Cimorelli grew up in El Dorado Hills. Their classic greeting of, “I’m Christina, I’m Katherine, I’m Lisa, I’m Amy, I’m Lauren, I’m Dani, and we’re Cimorelli” has been seen over 560 million times by fans around the world.

In 2011, they moved to Southern California to pursue their music career and were signed by Universal

Island Records. This video, Made in America, is

one of their original songs and has had more than 9 million YouTube views. It is the title track from their fourth EP (Extended Play) release.

We loved them before they became a sensation. Now we get to watch them become young adults and accomplished performers on YouTube along with the rest of the world.

SUNG-BONG CHOI —KOREA’S GOT TALENTBe sure you have tissues nearby before watching this video. It is more than a wonderful perfor-mance, it is a story of Sung-bong Choi, a boy who had been home-less since the age of five. While living on the street, he found music and the power of singing. It has been what kept him alive.

that incorporates music, slow-motion dance moves and classy suits into a blend of pure auditory and visual awesomeness. They’ve produced a number of multimillion view videos.

Almost as entertaining as watching the dancers are the people watching them dance. People walk by, and many are confused by all the activity, some take pictures, while others ignore the performance completely. Watch and you’ll see some entertaining reactions along with a dynamic performance.

The crowd stops and stares at this spontaneous and unexpected act of music. The station erupts with applause at its end. After which, the orchestra dissolves back into the crowd and vanishes.

The video has gotten well over 7 million views. While certainly not the only musical flash mob on YouTube, it is clearly one of the favorites.

INTERNATIONAL GUITAR NIGHT

THU, JAN 23 2014

$19-29; PREMIUM $39

For the January/February 2014 U.S. tour, International Guitar Night founder Brian Gore will be joined by Italy’s Pino Forastiere, Mike Dawes from England, and Quique Sinesi from Argentina. Pino and Mike are revered in contemporary steel string guitar circles for their unique mix of melody, improvisation and hand percussion using the strings, the fretboard and the body of the guitar. Quique is a master of many South American melodies and rhythms on both buitar

and charango. We are looking forward to a particularly inventive evening of contemporary guitar music.

International Guitar Night is North America’s premier mobile guitar festival. Sponsored by Acoustic Guitar Magazine, it is the only production of its kind to have grassroots origins. Ever since its beginning in 1995 in a converted laundromat in the California Bay Area, IGN has featured the best performing guitar composers from around the world. Since the beginning, audiences have cherished the friendly informal ambiance of the performances. Participants have relished the chance IGN affords to express reverence for one another, and to collaborate rather than compete. The unique brand of “guitar positivity” the forum provides has helped make IGN the most successful guitar showcase of its kind.

Note: As of 7/31/13, Mike Dawes has replaced Jon Gomm on this tour, as Jon has had to bow out for personal health reasons.

With its skill at creating innovative and modern productions of great works of literature, the Aquila Theatre returns,

bringing new life to Ray Bradbury’s visionary parable of a society gone awry. The New Yorker describes Aquila’s productions as “the classics made relevant with superb acting and clever staging,” while The New York Times exclaims “the excellent Aquila Theatre, an extraordinarily inventive and disciplined outfit.”

One of the most revered novels of the twentieth-century, Fahrenheit 451 is Ray Bradbury’s dystopian tale of a bleak future where literature

and knowledge are on the edge of extinction. Considered a work of science fiction when first published, Fahrenheit 451 has been debated for decades—issues of censorship, the effects of technology on society and literature, and the means by which knowledge is gained—continue to be very real concerns today.

“The four musicians in the Korean ensemble known as SamulNori are all virtuoso percussionists . . . their drumming —modulated into sounds of any nuance —could lead to total astonishment . . . highly praised by musicians after its 1983 debut, SamulNori is a complete theatrical experience as well.” (Anna Kisselgoff, New York Times)

Page 46: Stagepass Jan Feb 2014

The Korean words ‘samul’ and ‘nori’ mean ‘four things’ and ‘to play.’ In the case of SamulNori, they refer to the original ensemble of four musicians playing and dancing with four percussion instruments (eight musicians will perform for their Harris Center engagement). Founded by Kim, Duk-soo, the group’s leader and master of the Changgo (hourglass shaped drum), SamulNori has become the leading traditional Korean performance group. The ensemble performs in many configurations but usually tours as a quartet with Master Kim at the helm. The origins of their

music can be traced to what is usually referred to as farmers’ band music (Nongak) and ceremonial music. It also incorporates the influences of folk and religious music (Binari) and their intricate rhythms have become quite uniquely their own. Since these superb percussionists formed the group in 1978, SamulNori has sparked a renaissance in Korea’s music scene and garnered worldwide acclaim.

“SamulNori offers an experience that matches unsparing energy and technical mastery with a strong sense of spirituality…”(Los Angeles Times).
