What am I doing in Writing for Week 4 and 5?
TEACHER EXAMPLE
25/07/21 – 12:00pm
Bah-boom, bah-boom. My heart thumps as I enter
the Aquatic Centre for my first swim. I can’t believe I
made it to my very first Olympics! My race begins at
11:00am and it’s 10:30am. As I continue walking into
the Aquatic Centre to take my seat in the waiting
room I find myself remembering how I got here.
I’m 19 years old and I’ve trained for this my whole
life. I was extremely lucky to have been picked to
represent Australia in the 100m Freestyle. Tokyo is a
very interesting place. When I first got here I
couldn’t believe the amazing culture and food.
BING BING! The bell rings and it’s time for my race. I
focus on my breathing and remember that I am so
lucky to be here, it doesn’t matter about winning. I
step up to the block, ready to dive in.
MONDAY WEEK 4 - WRITING
We are learning to write a diary entry.
Pretend you are an Olympian and it is your first time at the Olympics. Use a ‘SIZZLING START’ to begin your writing.
Which event are you competing in? How do you feel? How did you get there? What does it look like where you are? Use your five
senses to describe what is happening. A diary needs a date/time. Paragraphs if you are writing lots of ideas!
Don’t forget to check your writing for SPELLING, MAKES SENSE (GRAMMAR) and INTERESTING IDEAS.
When researching, google your information by typing “Diving facts for kids” replace diving with the name of your chosen Olympic event!
TEACHER EXAMPLE
Brainstorm – Diving
1. 2 diving events (springboard, platform)
2. somersaults and twists 3. synchronised diving, top divers no splash 4. Rip entry 5. Springboard – cedar
Diving
Diving is an event held at the Olympics every 4 years. There are 2 Olympic diving events called Springboard and
Platform. Springboard is where divers can do tricks. Platform is where divers dive from 10 metres!
Some awesome tricks that divers do are somersaults and twists. Synchronised divers are amazing! They are the best
type of divers as they create very little splash in the water! This is called a rip entry.
Did you know that the springboard is made out of cedar material?
TUESDAY WEEK 4 - WRITING We are learning to write about an Olympic event.
Research an Olympic event. Here are some examples: rowing, swimming, gymnastics, diving, skateboarding. For more
sports and information: https://olympics.com/en/sports/
Create a brainstorm of 5 – 10 facts about your Olympic event. Using your brainstorm write your 5 – 10 facts into
interesting sentences. DO NOT say “rowing is about boats”. BUILD YOUR SENTENCES!
Don’t forget to include paragraphs when you start a new idea.
Don’t forget to check your writing for SPELLING, MAKES SENSE (GRAMMAR) and INTERESTING IDEAS.
We are learning to use our creativity to re-design the Australian flag,
mascot and Olympic uniform!
1. Draw a rectangle and re-design our Australian flag (maybe you would like to use the Aboriginal flag? Olympic
rings?)
2. Our Australian mascot is an echidna, kookaburra and platypus. Draw a picture of what animal should be our
Olympic Australian mascot – maybe you would like to write a sentence telling us why?
3. Re-design our Australian Olympic uniform. The current one is down below!
Below is the current flag, the current mascots and the current uniform. Your job is to change all that!
WEDNESDAY WEEK 4 - WRITING

We are learning to research information on either the Olympic rings or the
2000 Sydney Olympics.
Pick which topic you would like to research. Brainstorm 5 – 10 facts about the topic. Remember when brainstorming
you are only writing some words NOT sentences.
Turn your brainstorm into a creative piece of writing! Poster? PowerPoint? Drawing? Research paper?
Don’t forget to include paragraphs when you start a new idea.
Don’t forget to check your writing for SPELLING, MAKES SENSE (GRAMMAR) and INTERESTING IDEAS.
The host city for the
