From the Desk Of Fr. John
A Very Busy Weekend…just happened last week.
Right to life – Life Chain gave witness to our
deepest respect for life…especially the pre-born…but
all of life. Thank you to Herman Wenos and all who
helped plan the Chain and all who participated…it
was a prayerful time in our silent witness to life. Our youth helped us to respond to the poor in their
‘card-board city’ and begging at the door for St.
Vincent De Paul Society. Thank you to Julie, Michelle
and all those who helped plan and supervise this
learning experience in the works of mercy. Thank you goes to Liz and the many who helped with
the Chicken & Roast Pork Dinner. That was a lot of
work but a delicious outcome. We hope that spirit of
hospitality and working together will only grow! Let it Go Sunday…was a ‘huge’ success thanks
to Brad & Marty and the hundreds who ‘let go’ of
things to share in love with others. Now the sorting
etc. to get ready for the ‘Yard Sale’ will have to hap-
pen…with again many helpers who are ready to
serve. Thank You! Sometimes living discipleship can seem difficult
or even impossible. We may even cry out as the
disciples did in the Gospel… ‘Increase our faith.’ Je-
sus’ response might surprise us as well…‘If you had
faith the size of a mustard seed.’ Jesus wasn’t really
talking about faith as though it were a commodity…a
thing. Rather Jesus wanted to stress to his disciples
that it is a relationship with someone…that someone
is God in whom we put our complete trust. The Lord gives us a gift…a grace…to trust him and
hope in him…and believe in him. It is in that relation-
ship and his deep love of us that we trust. The Lord
will not go back on his word or take back his gift. The
Lord will be ever faithful to us, loving and merciful.
We can count on that even when we are not so faith-
ful…even when we sin God is there for us with love
and mercy. The key is that we trust in him and believe in the
gift that he shares with us…so that we can grate-
fully live that same love and mercy and share it gen-
erously with others. We are to lead others in trust and
faith. We are to extend forgiveness and mercy as
generously as he shares it with us...it is our duty as
disciples…and we don’t have to be patted on the
back for it.
Gratitude is an attitude and behavior that are natural
to the Christian disciple. It is the disciples’ response
to the gifts given and showered upon us by the Lord.
The key to our grateful response is the fact that we
recognize them as gifts from God…instead of some-
thing we have earned or accomplished. So we recog-
nize them for what they are and we gratefully receive
them and share them in love. The Gospel for this Sunday has us standing with
Jesus as a group of 10 lepers from a safe dis-
tance cry out to him… ‘Jesus, Master, have pity
on us!’ Earlier in the Gospel a single leper
approached Jesus with incredible faith and was
healed. Possibly he shared his good news with these
men who suffered from the same incurable illness
and gave them hope to approach Jesus in this hum-
ble way. Jesus sends them off to the priests to be
certified as cured, clean and able to return to
community life…and in obedience and trust they go. The Gospel tells us that… ‘As they were going they
were cleansed’. But the next part gives us a lesson
as disciples… ‘And one of them, realizing that he had
been healed returned…’ The Gospel goes on to say
that he came back… ‘Glorifying God in a loud voice;
he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.’ His re-
sponse was unique among the 10…the only one to
return and offer thanks. He offered it in a gesture that
would have been reserved for God alone…prostrate
on the ground in humble adoration and gratitude be-
fore Jesus. The kicker in the Gospel story comes with
the simple statement… ‘He was a Samaritan’.
The foreigner was the only one who recognized and
responded to the gift he had received…as well as the
source of that gift. He responded in gratitude! We might ask ourselves if we really realize the gifts
we have received…and do we respond with grati-
tude? Do we share in love the good news and gifts
we have received? Wow…it is getting more exciting as we see the
big steel framework going up!

ZIGGY’S WISDOM: How do you treat your family and close friends? ZIGGY’S THOUGHTS: This sounds like a silly question, but sometimes we take these loved ones for granted, are somewhat rude, and slow with compliments. It’s never “out of fashion” to be kind, respectful and helpful to all, loved ones included.

PRAY 4 AN END 2 ABORTION!
The Treasure of Grace
Today I saw the Crucified Lord Jesus. Precious pearls and diamonds were pouring forth from the wound in His Heart. I saw how a multitude of souls was gathering these gifts, but there was one soul who was closest to His Heart and she, knowing the great-ness of these gifts, was gath-ering them with liberality, not only for herself, but for others as well. The Savior said to me, Behold, the treasures of grace that flow down upon souls, but not all souls know how to take advantage of My generosity (Diary, 1687). My Prayer Response: Thank You, Jesus, for teach-ing us through St. Faustina that Your graces flow like "precious pearls and dia-monds" from the wound in Your Heart. Teach us how to take advantage of Your gen-erosity and gather Your graces for ourselves and for others. Divine Mercy Cenacle meets every first and third Wednes-day in Morris Hall at 1 pm.

Help Make Our Church
More Welcoming Volunteers are needed for
Tuesday mornings after
Mass to help keep our
Church neat and clean. Help
is especially needed to
straighten pews and books
and clean the church door
glass windows. Volunteer for
an hour or two. If interested
contact the Parish Office at
345-4343.
Faith in Action (FIA), an organi-zation supported by about 15 local churches who serve adults 60 and over and disabled adults in Collinsville, Caseyville, Maryville and State Park, is in need of volunteers. This year, FIA has been experi-encing difficulties in meeting requests for rides. The number of volunteers has declined and the number of request has in-creased by 64% from 2015. It is at a point where requests are
being declined. MORE DRIV-ERS ARE NEEDED. Volunteering is easy and flexi-ble. All that is required is a short orientation, a background check, a caring heart and a small amount of time weekly, monthly or less frequently. You can pick the type of service you want to provide and the number of times you want to volunteer. To volunteer or for more infor-mation contact Kristi Hofferber at FIA at 344-8080.
Annual Catholic Service Appeal:
How It Works The Annual Catholic Services Appeal (ACSA) is under way. The theme for this year’s appeal is Continuing the Mission of Charity. And that really is the heart of what ACSA is all about: Everyone working together to help everyone in our Diocese succeed. Because you are very much in-volved in the success of this ap-peal, we intend to communicate to you how it works and what it means to the people in our parish and Diocese. First, here is how our 2016-17 assessment/goal of $93,798 is determined. It is based on the information we provide to the Diocese in the Annual Parish Financial Report. The parish assessment/goal is based on a
formula recommended by the Presbyteral Council and the Diocesan Finance Council and approved by the bishop. The percentage used this year is 11.5% of annual adjusted parish income. The annual adjusted parish in-come is determined as follows: The sum of Parish: Income Investments Interest Received Property Sold Minus: Any investments on deposits
for more than three months to the Diocesan Deposit and Loan Fund
Loans paid (principal or in-terest) to the Diocesan De-posit and Loan Fund during the fiscal year. (Funds de-posited as part of a diocesan approved building campaign are exempt from the three-month exception.)
Any insurance claim reim-bursement
Any school income All funds collected above the parish’s assessment/goal will be refunded in full. The monies refunded (up to 10% of parish’s ACSA assessment/goal) will not be included in the parish’s ordi-nary income for the current fis-cal year. If funds are not col-lected to cover our assessment/goal, the parish pays the re-mainder.

Around the Diocese
2016 Diocesan Adult
Enrichment Conference
The 2016 Diocesan Adult En-richment Conference (DAEC) will be held at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel November 4-5. The keynote speaker will be author, radio personality, and podcaster Greg Willits. The DAEC is for everyone — elementary and secondary school principals and teach-ers, pastors and pastoral ad-ministrators, directors and co-ordinators of religious educa-tion, catechists, directors of RCIA, liturgists and liturgical musicians and other adults desiring personal faith growth. This year our DAEC theme, "Harvesting the Fruits of Disci-pleship," reminds us that sow-ing the seeds of Christian faith is only efficacious if we also remember to reap what we have sown (John 4:37-38). Breakout sessions will be of-fered by a variety of local and national speakers, including Fr. Seán Charles Martin, Tim-othy O'Malley, Jared Dees, Denise Utter, Ann Garrido and Paul Masek. For further information about registration, contact Chris Malmevik at 217-698-8500, x137 or [email protected].
