Justin P. Long, PE Assistant Project Manager | Repair & Restoration Division

Why Structural Engineering? It wasn’t something that I even questioned—I went to college to become a structural engineer. What made me zero in on structural engineering? Working with my grandfather, a carpenter, as a young child.

Some people say they “fell into” a certain profession, but as engineers, I believe that most of us choose this field because of our passion for buildings, construction, and our desire to be challenged. With deadlines, budgets, construction challenges and new building codes to keep learning, the day-to-day work can be stressful and challenging. But, at the end of each day, I get a lot of satisfaction in my work and knowing that what we do as structural engineers matters.

Jonathan Gallis, EITStructural Engineer III

Why Structural Engineering? I’ve always liked math, puzzles, and architecture. By the time I got to college, I was more of a problem solver than an artsy person, but I still wanted to work with buildings.

Current Projects• 2775-2901 Eisenhower Avenue Residential

Towers, Alexandria, VA• The New International Spy Museum at

L’Enfant Plaza, Washington, DC• Purple Line Operation and Maintenance Facilities, Montgomery and

Prince George’s County, MD• WMATA Andrews Federal Center Bus Garage, Forestville, MD

Most Memorable Project The International Spy Museum at L’Enfant Plaza and the strengthening of the existing foundation (ongoing now).

Notable Past Projects• The Apollo Apartments, H Street, NE, Washington, DC• The Blairs Mixed-Use, Block F-1, Silver Spring, MD• Marymount University Office Building (“Blue Goose”), Arlington, VA• Storey Park Mixed-Use, Washington, DC

Challenges & Solutions The buildings don’t always get built exactly as the drawings require, and thus we have to come up with new solutions based on what is already built. Preserving the architectural intent while creating a timely and cost effective solution, instead of demolishing and rebuilding, can often be a challenge.

Extracurriculars• Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington (SEA-MW),

Young Members Group• JDRF Real Estate Games and American Odyssey Relay Run Adventure

Education Integrated Bachelor and Master of Architectural Engineering, Structural Option, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, 2013

Why Structural Engineering? Since being a little kid playing with Legos, I have always been fascinated with how things are put together and how things interact with one another.

Current Projects• 22 M Street, NW, Residential, Washington, DC• 2311 Wilson Boulevard Office, Alexandria, VA• The Boro Mixed-Use Development, Tysons, VA

Most Memorable Project 22 M Street, NW in NoMa. First major project to have significant interaction with the architect to coordinate structural elements. Received recognition from the owner for the thoroughness of the deliverables submitted.

Notable Past Projects• Riverdale Park Mixed-Use, Buildings 1, 2A, and 4, Riverdale Park, MD• North Hills Tract E Residential Mixed-Use, Raleigh, NC• 4th and K Streets, NW, Residential, Washington, DC

Challenges & Solutions Column coordination is a very difficult task and is integral to the project’s timeline. Identifying issues as soon as they arise is important to keep the project on track. Reviewing changes to the project as they occur is the way to identify issues which may arise.

Extracurriculars• Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington (SEA-MW)• The Pennsylvania State University Alumni Society of Architectural Engineering• Dedicated Alumni with ScienceMONTGOMERY• Young Scholar Alumni Mentor for the Davidson Institute

Jack Przywara, EITStructural Engineer III | Repair & Restoration Division

Specialties Façade repairs, parking garage restorations, plaza restorations, structural strengthening, and due diligence investigations.

Why Structural Engineering? I originally wanted to major in physics in college, but my high school physics teacher recommended that I choose to pursue a career in engineering, where I could apply physics practically. I’ve always had an interest in building things, so structural engineering was a logical choice.

Current Projects• Verizon Campus Parking Garage Repairs, Ashburn, VA• Union Mills Structural Rehabilitation, Frederick, MD• 1550 Clarendon Blvd Garage Repairs, Arlington, VA• Waterpark Towers Garage Repairs, Arlington, VA • 5432 Connecticut Avenue Structural Strengthening, Washington, DC• Washington Square Garage Repairs, Washington, DC• 1717 H Street, NW, Garage Repairs, Washington, DC

Why do you like working with architects? They (architects) bring a creative concept to a whole project. If this role was left up to me, most of the architecture on our projects would employ perfectly symmetrical, box shapes, which no one wants.

Education Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering, University of Notre Dame, 2011; Master of Science, Civil Engineering, University of Kansas, 2013

Hometown Cincinnati, OH

Macenzie Smith, EITStructural Engineer III

Why Structural Engineering? I really enjoyed math and science when I was in school which led me to engineering. The students in the structural option of the architectural engineering program at Penn State really had a passion and a love for what they did which was the type of career I was looking for.

Current Projects• Chevy Chase Lakes, Chevy Chase, MD• Storey Park Mixed-Use, Washington, DC• 1760 Reston Parkway Office Building, Reston, VA• The Hotel at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD

Most Memorable Project The Hotel at the University of Maryland posed a unique structural challenge because the project incorporates two structural systems, using steel portions around the hotel’s ballroom to allow for less columns and a longer floor plate. As steel is a less forgiving material, the integration of the two systems required awareness of how changes to one system (concrete) would affect the other (steel).

Notable Past Projects• 82 Eye Street, SE, Residential, Washington, DC• Marymount University Residential Building, Arlington, VA• Portner Place Residential Wings A and B, Washington, DC
