Custom Design

Metso stacker reclaimers are custom-built for each indi-vidual application, with the customer’s needs in mind.

Boom Structure

Stiff boom structure limits drawdown and boom twistunder digging loads.

Finite Element Analysis

State-of-the-art finite element analysis software allowsMetso engineers to evaluate high stress areas prior tomanufacture for optimum fatigue life.

Fully Equalized, Four-Point Equipment Gantry

Mounted on rockers and equipped with cross-rail equal-ization to provide a statically determinate support.

Bucket Wheel Construction

Cell-less or cell-type bucket wheel construction isavailable dependent on the application and materialhandled. Bucket wheel drives are shaft-mounted witha fluid coupling and cushioned torque link to absorbbucket digging forces. A brake lock is included toallow bucket maintenance.

BucketsHeavy-duty, self-cleaning buckets attach easily tothe wheel body and dig cleanly without plowingor carryover.

Luffing Hydraulic System

Controlled acceleration and deceleration eliminatesboom bounce and surge.

Variable Speed Drives

Provide adjustable speed and torque-controlledoperation of slew and travel drives. The drives controlacceleration and deceleration, softening impacts thatoccur during speed changes and increase the life ofgearing, brakes, and motors. Maintenance is reducedand system reliability is enhanced.

Slew Bearing

Metso stacker reclaimers make extensive use of heavy-duty “non-moment - no uplift” style slew bearingsfeaturing hardened steel balls and through hardenedraces. These bearings offer the advantage of longerlife, reduced maintenance cost and predictable wearbehavior, compared to bearings having “momentresisting” capacity. When commercial slew bearingsare used on certain styles of machines, the designprovides rigid structural support for improved life.

Ergonomic Operator’s Cab

Provides outstanding visibility, cushioned adjustableseating and a sensible control layout in a comfortableair-conditioned cab environment.

Metso Designs Control Systems for Precise Machine Regulation

Metso stacker reclaimer control systems are designedwith the operator in mind, from the novice to theexperienced controls technician.

Man-Machine Interface (MMI)

The MMI system links the operator and theProgrammable Logic Control (PLC) control system via auser-friendly, on-screen interface. The MMI systemgives the operator the ability to control virtually allmachine functions and provides messages regardingmachine status, operations, maintenance, and safety.

The MMI system even “walks through”steps of operationfor training new or inexperienced operators.

Alarm/Fault Diagnostic Logic

Also included in all stacker reclaimer control systems.This advanced design minimizes troubleshooting bypinpointing the source of system problems. Advancewarning messages alert the operator when a machineshutdown is imminent.

One operator controls all system functions, oversees machine status, and performs troubleshooting, all from this sensibly arranged cab environment.

Automation and Controls

Programmable Logic Controllers

PLCs allow complete automatic control or combinationautomatic/manual control through the MMI. PLCspromote ease of limit adjustment and rate selection,reduce maintenance, and improve system diagnosticsthrough quick identification of problem areas. Inaddition, a modem interface allows remote trouble-shooting of PLCs from Metso’s office.

Advanced Automation

Metso stacker reclaimers are designed for fullyautomatic operation. Metso machines are equippedwith a manual and automatic control system. Featuresof this system include: automated bucketwheelfeedback logic to prevent overdigging, slew speedalgorithm logic to achieve constant digging rates,selectable pile geometry limits for multiple stackingand reclaiming configurations, and automaticmachine advance to ensure the same depth of cut oneach slewing pass. Slewing limits can also becontrolled manually by an operator through the MMIdisplay. The automated control system has beendesigned with minimal operator interaction required.

Operator Cab

The operator cab is provided with an ergonomically-designed chair and operations console for maximumcomfort and ease of operation. Air conditioningand heating systems provide a comfortable workenvironment in all seasons. Wraparound windowsprovide a panoramic view and high-intensity flood-lights illuminate a broad work area for evening orpre-dawn operation. A self-leveling cab feature withoperator control adjustment allows the operatorto maintain maximum visibility of all operationsthroughout the entire boom angle range.

Remote Operation

With the use of high density TV cameras, all functionsincluding machine start-up,digging parameters and piledressing can be done remotely, if desired. There is virtu-ally no need for an operator to go out onto the machine.

Man-Machine Interface (MMI)

MMI system provides total intelligent operator system control. In the event ofa problem, the MMI display instantly pinpoints the trouble area.

Detailed MMI animation of maintenance screens makes simple work oftroubleshooting electro-hydraulic systems.

Alarm/fault diagnostic logic is included in all stacker reclaimer control systems,minimizing troubleshooting by immediately pinpointing the problem source.

Straight-Through Boom Configuration provides rapid, efficient stacking and reclaiming of materials in an environment where boom length neednot exceed 125 feet (38 meters). Ports, terminals, and power plants generally utilize this design when less expansive storage is required.

Two basic styles of stacker reclaimers utilizing threedifferent configurations of trailing tripper structurestypically meet most storage requirements for bulkports, terminals, electric power stations, and otherfacilities where efficient stockpile management of rawmaterials is essential.

Trench Type Stacker Reclaimers

This configuration is ideal for installations with low-volume, high-active storage pile capacities between30,000 and 60,000 tons, where reclaiming operationsare accomplished by a longitudinal pass through thepile. Reclaim rates usually vary from 2,000 to 4,500 tonsper hour.

Slewing Type Stacker Reclaimers

This type is typically used where large quantities ofmaterial must be readily available, where blending ofgrades of material is required, or where available yardlength is limited. These machines feature boomlengths up to 220 feet (67 meters) and stacking andreclaiming rates up to 6,000 tons per hour for coal and8,000 to 10,000 tons per hour for iron ore. Whileoffering maximum flexibility, slewing type machinesalso help lower the unit costs involved in the handlingof bulk materials.

Both types of machines are vertically articulated(luffed) to reach both the top and bottom of thestorage pile. Although both machines are horizontallypivoted (slewed) about the vertical axis, only theslewing stacker reclaimer utilizes this motion foroperating in the pile during stacking and reclaiming.The slewing motion of the trench type machine is onlyrequired for switching between opposite sides of thestorage yard.

Trench type stacker reclaimers are ideal for installations with low-volume,high active storage pile capacities.

This Metso masted boom stacker reclaimer at Hongkong Electric Companyemploys a C-frame design and features a 60 meter boom radius forstacking at 3,000 mtph and reclaiming at 2,000 mtph.

Straight-Through Boom slewing type machines typically are suitable formost storage facilities.

Masted Boom slewing type stacker reclaimers are used in facilitiesrequiring higher live storage quantities.

Machine Configurations

Tripper Configurations

Masted Boom Configuration is designed for use in applications where extended boom length (over 125 feet/38 meters) is necessary. The addedsupport reduces excessive boom flex inherent in long-reaching stacker reclaimers or where high digging forces cause unacceptable boom tip deflection.

Articulating Tripper is used when material enters and leaves the storage area from the same end of the yard. By articulating the tripper structure,this section can be lowered (retracted) for reclaiming operation.

Scissors-Type Tripper is also used when material enters and leaves the storage area from the same end of the yard. This tripper utilizes a separateelevating conveyor to direct the material to the centerline of rotation for stacking.

Straight-Through Tripper is utilized when material enters the storage yard from one end of the yard and leaves toward the other end. If facilityoperation is such that some or all of the material may bypass the storage yard, a splitter gate can be mounted at the tripper head chute.
