Introducing StraterIntroduction to StraterWelcome to Strater, a powerful welllog, borehole, and crosssection plotting software package.Strater creates 14 different log

types: depth, line/symbol, crossplot, zone bar, bar, percentage, tadpole, post, classed post, complex text, graphic, lithology, well construction, and function logs. Each of the logscan be modified to suit your needs.Strater 3 adds the ability to createmaps to display the well locations,

base maps, and well selector lines.Strater 3 also adds cross sectionsthat interpolate between wells.Strater exports to a variety offormats, including a direct export toGolden Software's Voxler program tocreate Strater cross sections as fdiagrams in 3D space.

    ence

Data can be imported from manysources, including ASCII text files,LAS files, and most databases.Strater's internal data structure cancontain multiple tables. Multipleboreholes can be stored in the datatables at one time.

Create individual logs or createcross sections connecting multiple logs.

Strater can have multiple boreholes displayed in a single view. You can specify adifferent well ID for each log in a borehole view with a few mouse clicks. You can alsocreate multiple borehole views, map views, and cross section views in a single project.

Once you design a borehole view, map view, or cross section view, you can use thedesign repeatedly with other data. There are several features in Strater designed tosave time with borehole graphic processing. After creating an initial design, you can

Various font styles are used throughout the Strater quick start guide and online help.Bold text indicates menu commands, dialog names, and page names. Italictextindicates items within a dialog such as modules, group box names, options, and fieldnames. For example, the Import dialog contains a Look in list. Bold and italic textmay occasionally be used for emphasis.

In addition, menu commands appear as File | Import. This means, "click on the Filemenu at the top of the plot window and then click on Import within the File menu

list." The first word is always the menu name, followed by the commands within themenu list.

Three-Minute TourWe have included several example files with Strater so that you can quickly see someofStraters capabilities. Only a few example files are discussed here, and theseexamples do not include all ofStraters many log types and features. The Object

Manager is a good source of information as to what is included in each file.

    Sample Strater Files

To see the sample Strater files:

    1. Open Strater.2. Click the File | Open command.3. Click on a .SDG file located in the Samples folder. By default, the Strater Samplesfolder is located in C:\Program Files\Golden Software\Strater 3\Samples.4. Click Open and the file opens. The primary graphical component to a document is a borehole view. A borehole view iseither based on a template file or created from scratch by adding the necessary log, header and footer items. Boreholes views, map views, and cross section views displaylogs, well and base maps, and cross sections of the selected data when the tab is

selected. When a data table tab is selected its data appears in the workspace.

    Lith Secton-1 .sdg

The Lith Section-1.sdg sample file contains a sample

lithology log column. Age, formation, lithology type, andlithology description appear in the borehole view. Fourdata tables are included in the .SDG file and include theinformation being displayed in the borehole view.

    Example Logs.sdg

The Example Logs.sdg sample file contains every type of

log file that Strater can create. Click on a log and theProperty Manager updates to show only that logsproperties. Experiment with the properties for the logs tosee how the log changes. Click on the map and crosssection tabs to experiment with the properties for themap and cross section views.

The Lith Section-1.sdg filecontains several zone bar logs

    and a lithology log.

The Example Logs.sdg file displays an exampleof each log type in the same borehole view.

One purpose of the sample files is to discover the effects of changes made in theProperty Manager to experiment so that the functionality is closer to secondnature and you do not need to search for the correct setting. Use these sample files,

view, map view, and cross section view. Wells are displayed in the borehole view. Mapviews display well locations, well selector lines, and base maps. Cross section viewsdisplay connected zone bar or lithology logs for multiple wells, connecting the lithologyor other stratigraphic information across wells. The table view contains all of the datastored in the project.

    This is the S t r a t e r borehole view with the V ie w M a n a g e r , O b j e ct M a n a g e r , andP r o p e r t y M a n a g e r windows displayed on the left side. Tabs displaying the map view,

View Manager The View Manager displays a list of all of the borehole view, map view, and cross section windows open in the existingproject.

Object Manager The Object Manager contains a hierarchical list of the objectsin a Strater borehole view, map view, or cross section window.

These objects can be selected, added, arranged, edited, andrenamed in the Object Manager. The Object Manager isinitially docked on the left side above the Property Managerand below the View Manager. Changes made in the ObjectManager are immediately reflected in the borehole view, mapview, or cross section window. The Object Manager can bedragged and placed at any location on the screen.

Property Manager The Property Manager allows you to edit any of the properties
