It gives me pleasure to be a part of Twinning programme of Pondicherry University and St. Xavier‘s College(Autonomous), Kolkata. St. Xavier‘s College is a Jesuit Institution with an unarguable academic acumen and bears 157 years old legacy. THE TWINNING PROGRAMME

The twinning programme is an

innovative educational concept which

broadens the scope of educational

programme by providing opportunity

and access for candidates aspiring to

pursue higher studies through

distance mode blended with the

characteristics of regular programme.

The twinning programme envisage as

a tie up between two premier

institutions viz., Directorate

of Distance Education of Pondicherry University and St. Xavier‘s College, Kolkata. The Pondicherry

University and St. Xavier‘s College twinning programme, a unique form of distance education, one of its

kind in India, is established during this academic year 2017-18.The academic programme already

offered by Pondicherry University through distance mode is offered in twinning arrangement with St.

Xavier‘s College, Kolkata.

This programme gives a gamut of choices to the student community to learn and assimilate the nitty

gritty of the subjects through a well designed and meticulously executed academic rigor at St. Xavier‘s

College.

It is indeed a great boon to prospective candidates working in the corporate sector who are either unable

or deprived of the opportunity to pursue higher education in a formal regular setting.

The marked difference between the conventional distance education programme and the twinning

programme is that the students of twinning programme would undergo a rigorous extended class room

interactive session handled by expert faculty and experts from industry on all Sundays during the

academic year.

TWINNING INSTITUTIONS

1. PONDICHERRY UNIVERSITY

1.1 ESTABLISHMENT AND ROLE

Pondicherry University is an outstanding institution of higher education and is one of the Central

Universities in India. Teaching, research, extension and outreach are the primary functions as seen in all

Central Universities. In addition, it has also affiliated colleges located in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe,

Yanam and the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Union Territory of Lakshadweep is

also expected to have a college affiliated to Pondicherry University in the near future. The Pondicherry

University Act,1985 which has several unique features established the University

i. to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities.

ii. to make special provisions for studies in French and for integrated courses in humanities and

sciences in the educational programmes

iii. to take appropriate measures for promoting interdisciplinary studies and research.

7

Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, Principal of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata with Mamata Banerjee, the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Govt. of WB

The vast jurisdiction over

three Union Territories gives

the university a national

character. The residents

speak such diverse

languages Tamil, Hindi,

Bengali, Malayalam,

Telugu, English and French

coupled with the university‘s

policy of providing the

freedom to affiliated

institutions to choose the

languages in which they

impart education. This

diversity with the underlying

unity of higher education

makes it a microcosm of the

Indian polity. Thus, it aims to

live up to the expectations of

the people of India in providing a platform for the growth of togetherness.

1.2 LOCALE

Puducherry, is situated on the Coromandal Coast about 160 km. south of College place. A place which

has attracted the French to settle here about two centuries ago and is now a growing city and the capital

of the Union Territory bearing the same name. With a population of nearly 10 lakhs spread over a limited

land area (13"4‘4"N;80°14‘5"E) it is a cosmopolitan city with people not only from Indian sub-continent

but also from all the continents of the world. The Romain Rolland Library, more than a century and half

old with several rare French and Tamil manuscripts, is a veritable repository of treasures. The

Pondicherry museum houses rare collections of pottery from the Arikkamedu site which was a bustling

port city in the first century A.D. where Roman ships called in for trade and friendship. The intellectual

activities are fostered in many of its institutions such as the Sri Aurobindo Ashram where the teachings of

Sri Aurobindo resonate, the French Institute which caters to research needs in Science as well as

Indology and Culture, and JIPMER which undertakes frontier research in medicine. Pondicherry

University is located at 11 kms from this beautiful and active city. Frequent buses on the East Coast

Road connect the city and campus to Chennai. Puducherry is also accessible by rail from Chennai.

There is an airport and a minor port, which, however, only handle freight.

1.3 CAMPUS

The University‘s campus is on 780 acres spread on either side of the East Coast Road with the large

bush green forest within the campus. The land is an invaluable gift from the people and the Government

of Puducherry for the establishment of the University. The land is gently rolls down to the beaches and is

interspersed with lovely woods. Cut by a picturesque and deep ravine, this idyllic campus is on the fast

track to developing into an ideal breeding ground for innovation and creativity.

1.4 STATUS

The University Grants Commission has provided funds for the development of the University. It is a

member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Page 8: ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS) KOLKATA-700016€¦ · 1 ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS) KOLKATA-700016 TWINNING PROGRAMME with PONDICHERRY UNIVERSITY (A Central University established

The Pondicherry University has more than 250 active and erudite members in different Schools,

Departments and Centres / Units. The University is academically organized at several levels for efficient

functioning. The teaching and research is carried out in the schools which facilitate inter-disciplinary

work. In each School there are several departments where teaching programmes are conducted. The

Centres are organized to carry out innovative research in emerging areas.

The primary objective of all the academic effort is to build a strong foundation with all necessary

infrastructures for expanding the horizons of knowledge and disseminate it efficiently. Extension activities

are also an integral part of the University‘s activities. The University‘s commitment to innovation in the

field of education is reflected in several spheres. It was the first University to provide the students with

choice in the courses they want to study. The choice based credit system unitizes the courses and allows

freedom of choice within the framework of the system. The students can now choose courses from other

departments and schools to augment their knowledge base, so that they can face the world on their

graduation with confidence.

1.5 DISTANCE LEARNING

The Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) is one more feather in the cap of the Pondicherry

University. The University in the academic year 1995-96, entered into the field of distance education to

cater the needs of the student community. It serves the citizens who have been denied the opportunity to

continue their studies earlier. The programmes offered by the Directorate are innovative and job-oriented.

The programmes such as MBA with four specialization in Marketing, Finance, International Business &

Human Resource Management are some of the very emerging programmes to be launched through

Distance mode. The curriculums of the programmes have been designed in such a way so that the

course content is the most up- to-date and stimulates every aspiring manager to enroll. Its uniqueness

lies in the Personal Contact Programmes which are conducted regularly and systematically for all the

programmes. Experienced Faculty from various Universities/Industries is drawn to deliver lectures so

that the target audience receives the maximum benefit and derive academic inputs from these Personal

Contact Programmes.

At the end of every Personal Contact Programme, the students are asked to evaluate and give a

feedback on the Programme conducted so that an objective assessment of the programmes is made.

Course materials are prepared assiduously by experienced Faculty who has made a mark in their area of

specializations.

2.0 ST. XAVIER’S COLLEGE : 157 YEARS(1860-2017) : A Brief History of the College

A host of seven Belgian Jesuits arrived at Calcutta in November 1859, under the leadership of Fr. H. Depelchin(Rector: 1860-1871), the Founding father of the second St. Xavier‘s. They shifted St. Xavier‘s from Chowringhee to the Sans Souci Theatre in January 1860, which is now the honest home of learned professors and zealous students.

With one hundred and fifty seven years of service to the nation, St. Xavier‘s College, Kolkata, has grown today into a leading educational institution in India. Both St. Xavier‘s School and College are proud of their contribution to the cause of education and culture in Bengal for 157 years. These twin institutions have produced many great educationists and students who earned regard and respect for their Alma Mater.

Fr. E. Lafont was appointed Rector in October 1871. He was a gifted teacher of Physics. The terrible cyclone of November 1864 proved the beginning of his fame. The catastrophe might have been much greater, had not Fr. Lafont signaled the timely warning.

It was Fr. O‘Neill(Rector: 1904-1914) who gave the College its crest and the motto : Nihil Ultra, a motto, significant and suggestive of a noble ideal, of an unconquerable hope, that urges the Xaverian to a

Page 9: ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS) KOLKATA-700016€¦ · 1 ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS) KOLKATA-700016 TWINNING PROGRAMME with PONDICHERRY UNIVERSITY (A Central University established

9

consistent quest for the higher. The motto of the young Xaverian is the old Maxim : ―Perfectum nihil est, aliqiriddum restat agentiim‖(Nothing is perfect as long as anything remains to be done).

The Jesuit College aims at forming young men and women of competence, commitment, compassion and conscience. St. Xavier‘s College thus aims at making its own contribution towards a transformation of the present-day social condition so that principles of social justice, equality of opportunity, genuine freedom and respect for religious and moral values, enshrined in the Constitution of India, may prevail, and the possibility of living a fully human existence may be extended to all sections of society.

St. Francis Xavier is the Patron of St. Xavier‘s. There is not an educated Indian who has not heard the name of Francis Xavier. It is to India that Ignatius of Loyola, the Founder of the Society of Jesus, sent his greatest son, Francis Xavier in 1542. Xavier was a zealous ―missionary on the move‖. He sailed to Malacca and Japan in 1549 where he spent two and half years. In April 1552 he set sail to Chaina via Malacca from Goa, never to return alive. He died at Sancian, a small island facing Chaina, on 2nd December 1552. Whatever he went, he plunged himself into charitable and pastoral work preaching the message of God‘s love to people. He worked in India for 10 years from 1542 to 1552, called Xaverian decade.

The list of former old students of St. Xavier‘s includes many scientists, actors, filmmakers, poets and industrialists in Bengal. It can boast of some of its pupils who became international citizens of repute : Rabindranath Tagore and Jagadish Chandra Bose. While Tagore was impressed by the relationship between teachers and students at St. Xavier‘s, Bose found encouragement for his introduction to science in the person of Fr. Lafont, who was called ―the father of science‖ in India. Three chief minister of Bengal – H.S.Suhrawardy, Siddhartha Shankar Ray and Jyoti Basu passed through the portals of St. Xavier‘s. One will invariably come across, in any important office in Kolkata, a Xaverian who has excelled in his field.

St. Xavier‘s has always been known for its cosmopolitan and national in character. Much before the expression ―national integration‖ gained currency, St. Xavier‘s has tried to foster among its students the spirit and practice of it. Coming as they do from all over India and from various communities, they live in complete harmony, understanding and mutual respect. Thus they are encouraged to develop beyond local and group affinities, loyalties to the country and to society at large. The B.com Department started functioning in 1946. The Golden Jubilee of the Department was celebrated in 1996. The B.Com. Evening Department started functioning from 1st July 2006 as co-educational Department.

The national Assessment and Accreditation Council(NAAC) recognized St. Xavier‘s College as an ―A‖ grade institution in 2003. In May 2006, it was declared as Centre with Potential for Excellence by the UGC. From July 2006, it became an autonomous college(the first in West Bengal). In January 2017, the college was awarded an A++ grade with CGPA 3.77 on 4.00 point scale, by NAAC. This score is the highest in the country by any College undergoing the third cycle of reaccreditation. India Ranking 2017 has placed St. Xavier‘s College at a commendable number 6 among all the Colleges in the country.

St. Xavier‘s College has been granted

(1) The status of College of Excellence(CE) (2014).

(2) The status of ―Heritage College‖(2015).

(3) In the second phase for DBT Star College(2015).

2.1 VISION AND MISSION OF ST. XAVIER’S COLLEGE

St. Xavier‘s is a metaphor of commitment, care and service, and this momentous hour of the history of our college makes us, the Xaverians articulate our pledge for prosperity, our ‗vision‘ of the ‗mission‘ of St. Xavier‘s College, our ambition and aspiration for future.

welcomed those of all beliefs and traditions, and has respected and valued ‗the diversity which their membership brings to the College Community‘. Accommodation of such diversity has always been abiding attribute of any Jesuit enterprise. Founded under the auspicious of a particular religious denomination, we, today, find ourselves completely secular in character. We are determined to preserve this identity. We firmly believe that the distinctive Catholic and Jesuit Character of the College, both in tradition and spirit is integral to our identity.

We believe that St. Xavier‘s College can remain faithful to its heritage and extend its intent to meet the intellectual and spiritual challenges of the contemporary and future academic world. Working conscientiously and creatively, we shall forge a vision of what St. Xavier‘s can be as a Catholic and Jesuit College for the twenty-first century.

The following version of our Vision Statement crystallizes our critical self-understanding of the Mission of St. Xavier‘s College. We are certain that it will further the prospects for an ongoing dialogue with our peers as we discover a new the Catholic and Jesuit dimensions of the future of the College.

2.2 OUR VISION:

The College, however, continues to be an affiliated college of the University of Kolkata and is
