We were excited this year to welcome the most ethnically diverse class in the history of St. Xavier High School. Sixty-four students of color joined the Class of 2019, more than 15 percent of the total class number of 416. This achievement was thanks to the hard work of many people in our community: Mr. John Ravenna ’87, the Parents Across Cultures, our current students, alumni and more. As I travel around the country and meet with alumni, they often ask me, “What is the ultimate goal?” If 18 percent of our students could come from multi-cultural backgrounds, our community would mirror the Greater Cincinnati region, according to a recent report by the Chamber of Commerce. That would be a number we would be proud to reflect in our St. Xavier community.

Our incoming freshmen come from the East Side and the West Side, from Northern Kentucky and the Northern Suburbs. They are scholars and athletes, artists, actors and musicians.

Is this great diversity of backgrounds and passions a threat to our unity as a community? I don’t think so. That diversity can be, and is, our richness! As I asked our students at the Mass of the Holy Spirit, “did you ever go into Skyline and order a one-way?” No, it’s the rich diversity of many different ingredients and sauces that turns a boring tortilla into a delicious burrito at Chipotle.

Perhaps the most important kind of diversity is our economic diversity. Our students come from the wealthiest and the poorest families in our region, and everything in between. This year alone, 40 percent of our students will receive some level of need-based financial aid, for a total of $3,800,000. We simply couldn’t do that without your help. The generous parents, alumni and friends of St. Xavier who are named in the President’s Report enclosed in this issue make it all possible. Thanks to you, any academically qualified student desirous of a rigorous Jesuit education can become a Man for Others at St Xavier. That should make us all very proud!

Yours in Christ,Timothy A. Howe SJ

Welcome to the Class of 2019

St. Xavier High School celebrated the rst day of school on August 21, 2015 welcoming the 416 members of the Class of 2019.

Bombers Watch Pope Francis Present to Congress

Pope Francis, nicknamed ‘The People’s Pope’, arrived in the U.S. to thousands of cheering fans lined along Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C.

To celebrate the historic papal visit, St. X halted classes on Thursday, September 24, so the entire student body could watch the former Jesuit Father Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina—now Pope Francis-—address a joint session of Congress.

As expected, he tackled a number of social and economic issues in his speech that affect the quality of life for the poor and

underprivileged, including income inequality and immigration. Pope Francis’s speech to Congress was one of four total English speeches he gave. An additional 14 speeches during his six-day visit were delivered in his native Spanish. To celebrate the Pope’s visit to the U.S., Mayor John Cranley ‘92 issued a formal proclamation declaring the week of the Pope’s visit—9/21 through 9/27—as Jesuit Education Week in Cincinnati. This landmark event was celebrated and discussed in classrooms.

First to 50

St. X and Lakewood St. Ed are currently tied with 49 OHSAA state titles. The next state championship team is the First To 50. Keep an eye out on stxavier.org or @stxsports for information on all St. X sports teams! Go Bombers!

The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a tradition established at the very rst Jesuit school 462 years ago. Since Jesuit schools are known for their academic excellence, the Mass was created for students to call upon the Holy Spirit at the beginning of the year to aid them as they begin new classes. An additional step of welcoming the Freshman Class was added to the Mass years ago as a way to initiate the new students to Jesuit tradition.

St. Xavier President Fr. Tim Howe SJ commenced the celebration by welcoming the Freshman Class of 2019 as they entered the gym from opposite sides to take the seats reserved for them in the middle of the gym.

Many St. X students participated in the Mass including amazing vocal performances by Luke Wieglos and Ihsan Walker and a reading by Ciggy DeVeyra. A number of St. X choir and band members also helped make the Mass and musical performances a truly moving and inspirational moment.

182,000pounds of food

Canned Food Drive

As you know, the Canned Food Drive (CFD) at St. Xavier is a Fall tradition. Each year students collect food for people in need in both the Greater Cincinnati area and rural Appalachia. Families, friends, alumni, faculty and students then deliver the food at the conclusion of the CFD. The 2014 Canned Food Drive was very successful as students collected more than 182,000 pounds of food and made deliveries to well over 600 local families! An integral part of the Canned Food Drive is the Adopt-A-Family Program. Through this program, the St. Xavier community is given the opportunity to “adopt” needy families referred by various social service agencies in Cincinnati. If you would like to participate in the CFD through the Adopt-A-Family program, please see the St. X website where detailed information is available. Thanks!

Alumni Bombers Lead By Example with Service Event

Dr. Ralph Watson ’66 Inspires St. X

Parents Across Cultures (PAC) kicked off the school year by holding an ice cream social on Sunday, August 16 to welcome the Class of 2019 and their families.

PAC President David Garcia-Rodriguez and PAC Secretary Vanessa Silva thanked everyone for coming and all the volunteers who helped with the scooping of the ice cream before introducing Principal Terry Tyrrell to begin the brief, information-packed program.

Principal Tyrrell shared the exciting news that the Class of 2019 is the largest group of multicultural students in St. Xavier’s history by number and percentage – 16% of the freshman class is composed of multicultural students. He thanked the PAC group for their collaborative partnership in promoting St. X and recommending students from their schools and neighborhoods who would be a good t.

Director of Multicultural Initiatives John Ravenna echoed those sentiments and also thanked the PAC families for their commitment. He urged the group to keep the momentum build-ing and shared St. X’s short term goal to have 16%-20% of the entire student body be represented by multicultural students.

PAC Ice Cream Social

The St. X Young Alumni Committee has been hard at work the past few weeks collecting donations of personal hygiene items before home football games for the Mary Magdalen House in Over The Rhine. Their efforts culminated in a service event on Saturday, where Bomber Alumni came out in force to refurbish the Mary Magdalen House location.

Mary Magdalen House provides a safe and pleasant place for needy individuals to shower, shave, brush their teeth, launder their clothes, use a phone and have messages or mail delivered to them. Bomber Alumni have dedicated time and supplies the past few years to help continue their mission, which is true to Jesuit and St. Xavier ideals.

Ryan McGraw ’05, Jeff Scheper ’03, Nick Scheper ’10, Matt Hemberger ’03, Tyler Gagnon ’07, Walter Gibler ’08 and Chris Ryan ’11 spent their Saturday afternoon putting fresh coats of paint on the walls of Mary Magdalen House, including the exterior, entrance, the bathrooms and the community rooms.

Bombers were treated to an inspiring presentation this fall from Long Blue Line member, Dr. Ralph Watson ’66.

Dr. Watson, a retired Michigan State University Professor of Medicine and current vascular molecular hypertension researcher, spoke to the students about his life path. From growing up in Avondale, to being one of the few, early multicultural students at St. Xavier High School and then onto Xavier University as a college student, he helped found a history-changing, minority student group during turbulent times.

Dr. Watson’s presentation included many nostalgic moments and photos from his times at St. X and XU and he brought along some

family and important life mentors as well. One of Dr. Watson’s mentors in the audience was Dr. Terry Toepker, former St. X teacher and football coach. Dr. Watson shared a story about how his father and Dr. Toepker’s father worked together and often spoke proudly about their sons’ involvement with St. X.— Dr. Toepker as a teacher and Dr. Watson as a new student.

Dr. Watson fondly recalled how on his rst day as a football player, Coach Toepker pulled him aside, told him he knew their fathers were acquainted and urged Dr. Watson to reach out to him for anything he needed as a student at St. X. That interaction profoundly affected Dr. Watson, showing him the depth of the caring spirit at St. X and he encouraged the students in the audience to emulate Dr. Toepker’s actions and reach back to help others who are coming up behind them. Helping those coming along behind you—be it younger classmates or younger siblings—was an important theme in Dr. Watson’s talk. He also emphasized additional Ignatian values in his presentation including not being afraid to ask for help when needed, to treat everybody with respect and to demand excellence from your children, but to know when they need a hug.

Students applauded loudly at the end of Dr. Watson’s presentation and many lined up to shake his hand and thank him for his talk, continuing the St. X tradition of excellence.

Students Visit New Taipei City

St. Xavier Foreign Language Teacher, Mrs. Wei Yuan, and four St X students said “hello” -or “Lee hò” ‘in Taiwanese—to Cincinnati’s sister city, New Taipei City, Taiwan this past summer as part of the Sister City Exchange Program.

During the trip to Taiwan’s most populated city, the students participated in classes making handmade sky lanterns and visited local landmarks, including temples and museums.

One special experience included learning to make traditional dumplings, then delivering them to a nursing home and sharing them with the residents. This enabled the students to learn about Taiwan traditions as well as allowing the students to share our St. X tradition of ‘Men for Others’.

Mrs. Yuan and the students also met the New Taipei City Mayor and had dinner with his department. The students represented St. X well in our sister city.

The Doyle Seedling Program

Denny and Lois Doyle are proof that good seeds do grow through trust in God and listening to His call upon your life. After entrusting their most treasured possessions to Catholic educators – their St. X Alumni sons: Brian ’89, Mark ’91 and David ’98 and Summit Country Day Alumni daughter, Mary Beth ’94 – Denny and Lois Doyle realized that they had a specific passion for the academic excellence and Christian values that a Catholic education provides and became determined to assist those may not be able to afford a Catholic education.

This passion led Denny and Lois to establish the Doyle Family Foundation in 1991. After creation of their foundation Denny and Lois might have been tempted to sit back and pat themselves on the back for their many charitable contributions, but that wasn’t enough to satisfy the Doyles calling to give of themselves. They realized God might not only be calling them, but calling others to give back too. An idea started germinating that the Doyles could potentially create a way to inspire and encourage others to give back. This idea grew to be the Doyle Family Foundation’s Seedling Program.

The Doyle Seedling Program is an innovative Doyle Family Foundation program to encourage others to give back, so future generations can afford a St Xavier education or any other Catholic educational institution they choose. Catholic school tuition is on the rise, due to economic factors, schools needing to attract the best and brightest faculty as well as necessary facility updates and upgrades. Many families are forced to eliminate Catholic school as an educational option for their children because they just can’t afford it.

The Doyle Seedling Program was created to encourage alumni who have benefited from a Catholic

education to help those prospective students and families afford a Catholic education. Denny Doyle said, ‘It’s hard for St. Xavier alumni, especially younger alumni, to think of themselves as endowment creators. They think it is beyond their capacity to make a real difference. But the Doyle Seedling Program helps those Alumni establish endowments in their names by planting the initial ‘seed’ for their endowment and thus enabling them to then grow the newly formed endowment for the future.’

Denny Doyle feels strongly that we are called not only to give of ourselves, but to help others receive the same blessing that giving back provides. He said “For those of us who are able, we need to pay it forward…we stood on the shoulders of others, if others stand on our shoulders they will in turn pay it forward and future generations will benefit and then perpetuate the cycle of giving back.”

To date the Doyle Seedling Program has contributed to the growth of over 37 St. Xavier endowments and 150+ endowed scholarships at Catholic Schools in Greater Cincinnati. The Doyle Family Foundation’s goal is to have over 200 endowments established in the next two years.

St. X’s Development Department would like to encourage the St Xavier alumni classes of 1995-2005 to become part of the St. X Endowments program set up with assistance from the Doyle Seedling Program. These particular Alumni are at the most beneficial time in their lives to begin a family endowment because they have had time to establish themselves in their careers, possibly start their own families and truly see the value of their St. X education more fully. Taking advantage of the Doyle Seedling Program is the best way to establish a legacy early on and make an intimidating task seem much less daunting.

The Doyle Family has certainly embodied the biblical passage from Matthew 17: Verse 20. “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

The Doyle Family has exemplified that passage and they lead by example. They firmly believe that everyone who is a part of the St. X Long Blue Line can move mountains, give back and receive the blessings that come from amazing generosity like theirs.

For information on how you can create a family endowment through the Doyle Seedling Program/ St. Xavier Endowments please contact Ed Franchi at [email protected].

Pope Francis said it best with the following quote…

“ Although the life of a person is in a land full of thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which the good seed can grow. You have to trust God.”

Vice President for Advancement

Believe it! Become it! That is what we are encouraging young men from around greater Cincinnati to do. The “it” is to be a part of the Long Blue Line. The “it” is to strive for the Magis. The “it” is to be open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to doing justice in our world. The “it” is to be a St. Xavier Bomber.

Making such a big commitment at such a young age is a lot for a young man in eighth grade. It’s difficult. There is a line that really strikes a chord with me from the movie A League of Their Own. Tom Hanks stars as an old baseball player turned manager of a women’s professional baseball team. (Actually, there are a lot of great lines from that movie but this one fits best for what I am trying to say!) Hanks tells one of the players who is quitting the team because she says it is too hard, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great.”

That is so true about St. Xavier High School. St. X is not the easy decision for so many of our students. Every day our academics are incredibly challenging. Our co-curriculars are the same way. Whether it be football, Theatre Xavier, Mock Trial,

string ensemble, marching band, mission trips, community service or any of the other numerous co-curriculars; what is demanded and expected is the best. That expectation not only goes for our students, it goes for our faculty, staff, coaches, moderators and administration too.

It is that believing and becoming your best that makes attending at St. Xavier High School challenging, thrilling and fulfilling. It is why I came back to St. Xavier more than ten years ago. It is why I am so excited to be the Vice President for Advancement at St. Xavier.

I have had the opportunity to be a part of St. X as a student. I had legends in the classroom like Karl Hauck, Tom Ballaban, Mike Marchal, John Hussong, Fr. Ed Middendorf, Fr. Brad Schaeffer and Dick Piening. I played for incredible coaches like Steve Rasso, Bill Slinger and John Sabatalo. They all expected and demanded me to believe and become what St. Xavier is all about.

I had the tremendous opportunity to see my son Andrew go through St. Xavier and graduate with the class of 2013. His experience was just as incredible.

The names change to the likes of George Beluan, Alison Roberson, Dave Eby, Jim Telles, John Cole and Heather and Ed Nardini. I saw St. X prepare him for not only college, but for life as well. I saw the formation that happened with him while he was here. It was not always easy, but it is not “the easy” that makes this place great.

Our alumni and benefactors know this too. It can be hard to write that check. But it is the sacrifice and generosity of so many that make such a great difference for our young men. Glance at the names in this magazine. We are very blessed to have such incredible support. It is not an inexpensive endeavor to educate and impact young men the way it is done at St. Xavier. But it is worth every penny. So as I begin, in my new position as Vice President for Advancement, to follow in the footsteps of St. Xavier giants like Dick Klus, Paul Zook and Ralph Nardini, I thank you for considering the young men of St. Xavier High School with your gifts. I can assure you that your financial support of the St. X mission will make a difference in a young man’s life.

TheVision

Our vision is very simply stated, and a major driver in our strategic plan. At St. Xavier High School, a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, we are committed to being the rigorous college preparatory school in greater Cincinnati. e school where exceptional boys from diverse backgrounds transform into academically accomplished Men for Others. Young men who are prepared to discern and successfully carry out God’s plan for their lives and to serve as leaders in our rapidly changing world.

This vision, and our mission, is the driving force for everything we do at St. X. That same vision and mission are important to our alumni, parents and friends of the school. is is evident as we look at the extensive list of donors in this magazine.

To remain true to our Ignatian mission, we need to be sure that any academically qualified young man who wants to attend St. Xavier High School has that opportunity, regardless of his economic ability to pay tuition. is year we will provide nearly $3.8 million in need based financial aid to 40 percent of our student body. at does not include the $1,000 gap between the cost to educate and the actual tuition for every student. You can see the continuing increase in financial aid need graphed below. All of the tuition assistance granted each year to our students is hard-funded. While this is an expensive endeavor, it is necessary for the students of St. X.

ank you for your support. Your investment helps us to continue our very important mission of providing the opportunity for our students to receive a Jesuit education. eir spiritual and academic formation will help them to become Men for Others just like previous generations of the Long Blue Line.

Gift Annuities

Gift Annuities: An Easy Way to Benefit Yourself and St. X in a Volatile Market

The technical definition for a Charitable Gift Annuity is a gift vehicle that falls in the category of Planned Giving. It involves a contract between a donor and a charity, whereby the donor transfers cash or property to the charity in exchange for a partial tax deduction and a guaranteed lifetime stream of annual income from the charity.

But a charitable gift annuity is often much more than that. Behind each gift is emotion, love and charity for something close and personal to a donor and their family. This was certainly the case for Tom and Judy Shoop and Paul and Paulette Rasche. Neither Tom nor Paul attended St. X, but both families made the decision to send their sons to 600 West North Bend Road.

Steve attended St. Xavier with trepidation but did so knowing he could return to his hometown school after his freshman year if he was not happy.

“After his freshman year, we asked him if he wanted to change schools and he said there was no choice, he was a ‘St. X man’ through and through,” Tom remembers.

The Rasche’s had a similar experience with their son Pete ’89. Paulette’s father was a Bomber but there was no allegiance to the school because Paul attended Elder and they lived in LaSalle territory. Nevertheless, he and Paulette decided to send Pete to become a member of the Long Blue Line because of what they knew it would do for his future.

“ We sent our son Steve ’86 to St. X because it was a Catholic institution with the best reputation in the city,” says Tom Shoop. “We wanted him to have an advantage.”

Page 15: St Xavier 2015 Fall Magazine

Fall 2015 St. Xavier High School Magazine 13

“It was an easy choice,” says Paul. “We knew it was the right t for Pete and would push him to be his best.”

When it came time to review their finances, both families wanted to give back to St. X in some way. Purchasing a charitable gift annuity from St. Xavier High School would not only offer the opportunity to support the school that had such a big impact on their sons, but it was also an easy way to receive a guaranteed income for life.

For the Shoops, the gift annuity was also a remembrance. Steve passed away from cancer in 2011 and the annuity, as well as a scholarship in his name, are ways to remember his legacy.

Tom is impressed by the annuity and the tax advantages it offers.

“It preserves the corpus of the gift that we gave as an income producing asset while we are alive, with quite an attractive rate in terms of what the market allows,” explains Tom.

The Rasche’s also gave their first annuity because of their son, but more importantly to give back to the Long Blue Line of young men that followed Pete.

Paulette remembers talking with her son one day and out of the blue he said “You know mom, sending me to St. X was the most important thing you have ever done for me.”

“He was shy and the education he received gave him confidence to do all kinds of things,” says Paul.

Paul and Paulette gave a gift of stock for their first annuity. This type of gift helped their money work for them. They couldn’t sell the stock because of the cost basis, but the quarterly payments gave them more income than they would have received with dividends. The annuity offered stability in a volatile market.

“Making a gift this way was very easy and gives us the opportunity to support a place we believe in so much,” says Paulette.

Both couples truly have faith in this type of gift. Tom and Judy plan to give another annuity with cash to St. Xavier High School in the near future and Paul and Paulette have already given two annuities to the institution.

“St. X is embedded in the fabric of our family,” says Tom. “The impact it had on Steve is still with us and is very important us today. Annuities are the perfect way to give back.”

Melissa TranterNEW POSITION AT ST. XAVIER: Director of Annual Giving RELATIVES THAT ARE BOMBERS:Richard B. Tranter ’76 (father), Richard L. Tranter ’04 (brother), Terry M. Tranter ’62 (uncle), Terry W. Tranter ’90 (cousin), Michael Tranter ’93 (cousin), Christopher Tranter ’98 (cousin), Anders Anderson ’93 (cousin), JR Anderson ’90 (cousin) and Caleb Anderson ’17 (cousin)

WORK HISTORY RELATED TO YOUR NEW POSITION/WHAT DO YOU BRING TO ST. X?After graduating from Miami University, I spent my last ve years as the Director of Special Events in the Development Department of the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. My role was to develop and implement fundraising strategies to increase donor engagement and philanthropic revenue. I planned and executed National Geographic’s galas and worked closely with various event committees and executive teams. I look forward to handling the Annual Fund, contributing to donor cultivation and stewardship and overall supporting the institutional goals of St Xavier.

YOU ARE “COMING HOME” TO CINCINNATI AFTER BEING GONE FOR A WHILE, WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT ENJOYING AGAIN IN OUR GREAT CITY?I am very excited to be back home. Cincinnati has changed quite a bit in the last ve years and I look forward to learning the new heartbeat of the city. I cannot wait to explore the redeveloped neighborhoods and participate in the vibrant life of Cincinnati. I also look forward to spending time with my family and close friends who I missed while living in D.C. Finally, I anticipate revisiting some of the Cincy staples such as Skyline, Graeters, Zips, and the Cincinnati Art Museum…. the list goes on. Since coming home, I could not be more proud of our city! WHAT SHOULD OUR ALUMNI AND DONORS KNOW ABOUT YOU?St. Xavier alumni and donors should know that I am very excited to be supporting a high school that has been an important part of my family. My father always emphasized the Catholic values that he learned having graduated from St. X. Also, because my older brother and most of the boys in my Mt. Lookout neighborhood attended St. X, being a part of this school feels like home. Having attended Summit Country Day for grade school and St. Ursula Academy for high school, I have a personal understanding of the culture of Cincinnati’s Catholic schools.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN YOUR NEW POSITION?I feel privileged to be a part of this dynamic institution that fosters the development of caring brothers, fathers and leaders who help sustain and advance their communities. Whether attending sporting events, theatre performances and religious gatherings, I am delighted to be welcomed by the St. Xavier family. As the Director of Annual Giving, I look forward to hearing from the alumni as we advance and improve the St. X legacy.

RELATIVES THAT ARE BOMBERS: Father: Tim ’76, Brother: Patrick ’02, Uncles: Tom ’72, Jim ’74, Mike ’75, Gerry ’80, Dan ’78, Kevin ’82, Eugene ’83, Cousins: Gerry ’08, Matthew ’09, Kevin Jr. ’12, Brendan ’14, Tommy ’15, and hopefully/eventually Sean (class of 2023)

WORK HISTORY AND WHAT DO I BRING TO ST. X? My background in planning and leading outdoor adventure trips has made me pretty unsinkable and has given me a unique leadership foundation while working with a wide variety of people in a wide variety of environments and situations. I’ve been lucky enough to guide in some of the most incredible places in the world and collectively the people I’ve taken on these trips have a huge wealth of knowledge and interests. The wide variety of professional elds, personal passions, and unique personalities St. X graduates posses is something I feel right at home with and makes connecting to anyone natural for me. YOU ARE “COMING HOME” TO CINCINNATI AFTER BEING GONE FOR A WHILE, WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT ENJOYING AGAIN IN OUR GREAT CITY?As an ice cream connoisseur I’d be hard pressed not to mention Graeters right off the bat, but Cincinnati has grown so much in my time away that I’m really excited to rediscover everything and explore all the new additions. Obviously being close to family again is very exciting especially with the most recent addition Rory, my four-month-old niece. To put it simply, there are thousands of cities in the world but you only have one hometown, and I couldn’t be happier to be coming back. WHAT SHOULD OUR ALUMNI AND DONORS KNOW ABOUT YOU?I would want them to know I have a huge variety of interests and love learning new things. In the months leading up to starting at St. X I will have gotten my research card at the Library of Congress, road tripped around Iceland’s ring road, broadcasted a radio show, planned a large marketing event for lululemon, and won a ag football championship. I’m just as excited to connect with members of the class of ‘50 as I am to the class of ‘15. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN YOUR NEW POSITION?Finding a place where the mission and beliefs align with your personal goals and values is really important to me and one of the reasons I’m so excited about this position. From more of a nuts and bolts perspective, I’m excited to start meeting alumni and helping them connect with St. Xavier. I’ve always loved St. X and knew it was special, but being out of Cincinnati for a while really highlighted how strong the Long Blue Line is and how eager alumni are to continue their relationship with the school and everything it embodies.

Finding a place where the mission and beliefs align with your personal goals and values is really important to me and one of the reasons I’m so excited about this position.
