OHIO DEATH PENALTY SET TO RESUME JANUARY 12
TH
In January of 2015, Ohio announced a moratorium on the use of the death penalty. This moratorium will be lifted January 12th, with the execution of Ronald Phillips.
Bishop Thomas urges all people of good will to take five steps to abolish the death penalty in Ohio: 1. Pray for the victims of cr ime, those facing execution, and those working in criminal justice; 2. Reach Out to the families of those affected by violent crime with Christ’s love/compassion; 3. Learn about the Church’s teaching on capital punishment and educate others by visiting: usccb.org; 4. Advocate for the end of the death penalty by sending a postcard and by calling Governor John Kasich at: 614-466-3555, urging clemency for all 139 individuals on death row in Ohio. 5. Join us for a Candlelight Prayer Vigil for the abolition of the death penalty, on Wednesday, January 11th
at 6:00 PM at St. Francis de Sales Chapel (501 Cherry St., Toledo).

BISHOP DANIEL E. THOMAS NAMED ADMINISTRATOR OF THE DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND
Pope Francis named Bishop Daniel E. Thomas
as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of
Cleveland in addition to his responsibilities as the
Bishop of the Diocese of Toledo. This appointment
accompanied the acceptance of the resignation of Bishop
Richard G. Lennon for health reasons. Bishop Thomas has
served as the Bishop of Toledo since October 2014 and will
continue in this office while serving the Diocese of Cleveland.
According to canon law, the role of the Administrator is
to maintain the operations of the diocese and provide for the
needs of the faithful until the next diocesan bishop is named
by the Holy Father. “It will be a privilege to be of service to
the priests, deacons, consecrated religious, employees, and
lay faithful of the Diocese of Cleveland during this time of
transition,” Bishop Thomas remarked after receiving word
of the appointment from the Apostolic Nuncio to the United
States, the Most Reverend Christophe Pierre.
Bishop Lennon, whose retirement was prompted by
health concerns, has served as Bishop of Cleveland since
May 2006. Bishop Thomas has asked all the faithful of the
Diocese of Cleveland and the Diocese of Toledo to
remember Bishop Lennon in their prayers. Bishop Thomas
will also depend on all their good prayers that his ministry
will be pastorally beneficial and spiritually fruitful.

INCLEMENT WEATHER REMINDER In November 2014, Bishop Daniel E. Thomas,
declared that whenever a county/city within the
Diocese is under a Level 3 Snow Emergency, the
Catholic Churches within that region will cancel the
scheduled Saturday vigil, Sunday or Holy Day Masses.
Roman Catholics in that area, therefore, are dispensed from
the obligation to attend Mass. If Masses are cancelled,
Catholics are encouraged to participate in Holy Mass via
TV, radio or internet, making a spiritual Communion. When
Mass is cancelled, all other diocesan, parish, or school
events in that geographic region are cancelled.

DIOCESE SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM IN FULL COMPLIANCE WITH USCCB NORMS
Each year, the Diocese is required to undergo an audit
to ensure that it is in compliance with the articles of the
USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young
People. Bishop Thomas is pleased to announce that, for the
15-16 fiscal year, the Diocese was found to be in full
compliance with the requirements. The Diocese remains
committed to ensuring the protection of children and safe
environments for all young people. If you have knowledge
of abuse committed by any cleric, personnel or volunteer of
the Catholic Church, you are urged to make a report with
local police, and to contact Mr. Frank DiLallo, Diocesan
Victim Assistance Coordinator at 419-214-4880.
