A PRAYER FROM POPE FRANCIS

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you,

Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of

trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings

and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

CNS translation of the prayer Pope Francis recited by video March 11 asking Mary to protect Italy and the world during

the coronavirus pandemic.

A PRAYER FOR THOSE WHO ARE ILL

Merciful God, hear our fervent prayer for all who suffer from the coronavirus. May those who are

infected receive the proper treatment and the com-fort of your healing presence. May their caregivers,

families and neighbors be shielded from the onslaught of the virus. Give solace to those who grieve the loss of loved ones. Protect and guide

those who strive to find a cure, that their work may conquer the disease and restore communities to

wholeness and health. Help us to rise above fear. We ask all this through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, and in the name of your Son, Jesus, and

the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Pray for our Beloved Deceased In your prayers this week, please remember the repose of

the souls of our deceased parishioners, especially:

From the Pastor’s Desktop Dear Parishioners,

My Penultimate Bulletin Message: This message of mine in our parish bulletin for this weekend is the last but one of the messages I have posted for the most part of my 12 years as pastor at St. Veronica. In these messages, I have for years communicated with the parish community the news in our parish, sacramental milestones, inspirational words about the Word of God, invitations for virtues such as faith, justice, com-passion, service that build up a Christian and human community, humor, and sentiments of appreciation and gratitude. Since the time of my arrival at the par-ish in 2008, the parish bulletin has become a colorful and effective means of communication and inspira-tion. That is one of those things I’m humbly proud of regarding our achievements. I’m beginning to say goodbye to you all and thank you for all the blessings we have shared together at St. Veronica Parish. You have received my personal letter of farewell in the mail. Next week in the bulletin, the same farewell let-ter will be posted in the pastor’s page.

My Farewell Gratitude to the Parish Staff and Or-ganizations: I’d like to thank the current parish staff and the ones in the past and all those organizations like the pastoral council, finance committee, money counters. Thank you for your trust in me and the kind support.

Resuming Masses: Last Sunday we celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi at the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Masses. Those were the Masses we resumed after an interval of three months due to Covid-19. There were about 35 people at each of those Masses. Let’s keep praying for all those impacted by the virus in the U.S. and around the world. At the resumed Masses, we try to follow all the safety protocols recommended by the county and the Archdiocese. As it is convenient for you, please do come join the Masses. Those of you who are not well or apprehensive need to continue to shelter at home and try to catch Masses online or TV. We’ll have 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Masses on Sundays till the end of June. If there is a revision in the number of Masses, I’ll let you know ahead of time through email and on the website. I’d like to thank the parish staff for making sure that the safety measures are fol-lowed carefully.

Father’s Day: To all the fathers, Happy Father’s Day! For some of us, our fathers are with us and what a blessing it is for us to love and cherish them --- and take care of them! For some others, our fathers are gone to their eternal reward. My father Isaac returned

to God on December 27, 2017. I’m still grieving, and I know you who have lost your fathers, no matter how long ago, still grieve and miss them. We celebrate our fathers and shall always keep their sacred memory, whether they are with us now or returned to God. Let’s be deeply grateful for our fathers, those precious men who have taught us --- and still teach us --- how to live and love. They make our relationship with God as Fa-ther affectionate and authentic.

In all our fathers, we cannot but see God Himself. Isn’t it beautiful that God himself is our Father? Jesus called God his Abba (Father) and taught us to pray to “our Father” and relate to Him as His children. Our Father loves us with an everlasting love and unconditionally. He makes the rain fall on the good and the bad and lets the sun shine on the good and the bad. Such is his abiding and awesome love. Because we are all the children of the one Father, we become intimately con-nected with one another as sisters and brothers. How could we then not take care of one another in our need? How could we let anyone in this human family be deprived of basic needs and necessities? Let us make sure that the Father’s blessings flow to the whole of human family abundantly and ceaselessly. May God the Father keep shining His light on our fathers --- both living and dearly departed.

An Authentic Prayer: “I asked God for health that I might do great things, but I was given infirmity that I might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy, but I was given poverty that I might be wise. I asked for power that I might have the praise of peo-ple, but I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God. I got nothing I asked for, but everything I had hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am, among all people, most richly blessed.”

Father’s Day Quotes: “Father! --- to God himself we cannot give a holier name.” --- William Wordsworth. “Dad, you’re someone to look up to no matter how tall I’ve grown.” --- Author Unknown. “A father is a guy who has snapshots in his wallet where his money used to be.” --- Unknown. A little boy’s definition of Fa-ther’s Day: “It's just like Mother's Day, only you don't spend so much.” --- Unknown. “By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.” --- Charles Wadsworth.

Happy Father’s Day!

Your outgoing pastor & always a friend,

Fr. Charles Puthota, Ph.D.

St. Veronica is excited to be able to celebrate public Mass with our parishioners once again! Adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Archdiocese, and state and

local authorities, please note the following:

If you are not feeling well, are concerned for your own health, or are unable to attend Mass for any reason due to the current health crisis, please know that the Archbishop’s dispensation from the obli-gation to attend Sunday Mass remains in effect.

For the remaining Sundays in June, St. Veronica will celebrate two Masses - 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Daily Mass will resume at a later date. In order to minimize exposure, Masses will be 30-40 minutes long.

Attendance is limited to 100 people (25% of our church’s capacity) on a first-come, first-served basis. Entry will only be through the front doors of the church. The side chapel will remain closed.

Face coverings must be worn while waiting to enter the church and throughout Mass. The celebrant will explain the procedure for removing face coverings to receive Communion. Face coverings are not required for children under 2 years old.

Please feel free to bring your own hand sanitizer. The church will be cleaned and sanitized before, between and after each Mass.

Before being shown to your seat by an usher, all attendees are required to sign the Archdiocese’s Informed Consent form, which will assist us, if necessary, with contact tracing. One form per family will suffice, but the form will have to be filled out each time Mass is attended.

The pews have been cordoned off to maximize social distancing. At all times, ushers will assist our parishioners by showing them to their seats and facilitating reception of Communion. Kindly follow their instructions. Families living in the same household may sit together in the same pew.

There is to be no congregational singing. Our music director and one cantor will provide the singing parts of Mass. Praying and responding out loud is also discouraged. You are, however, welcome to pray and respond in a quiet voice.

The first and second collections will be taken at the regular time during Mass.

The Sign of Peace will be “contactless” - nodding one’s head or bowing slightly with hands folded as if in prayer to your fellow parishioners is a beautiful, safe alternative to shaking hands.

Communion will be given at the end of Mass, after the final blessing. Please follow the directions of the ushers and maintain 6 feet of space while in line. There will be one Communion line down the center aisle with half of the parishioners receiving at the front of the church and half at the back of the church. Once the Precious Body has been consumed, it is permissible to quietly and reverently exit the church via the side door by the baptismal font (for those receiving in the front) or the main doors (for those receiving in the back). Returning to the pew following Communion is discouraged. Before driving away, however, take a few moments in your car for silent prayer and reflection.

Though we know everyone is excited to be together again, for everyone’s health and safety, please refrain from gathering outside the church following Mass.

We expect hospitality will resume at a later date, once we receive the go-ahead from the Archdiocese and local authorities.

Reflecting on the Word

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time When I was a choir director, my choir sang a song based on Luke 12:32: “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.” While we learned the piece I asked people to share their fears. Some answers were the future, change, a past secret being made public, rejection, being alone, and death. We discussed whether or not we could control or alter any of those fears and realized that we had little or no control over any of them. So what could we do to “have no fear”? Trust God’s promise to be with us to find a way to face whatever comes. That reflects Jeremiah’s wisdom: “The Lord is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors … will not prevail” (Jeremiah 20:11a). Being aware of God’s presence, God’s grace, makes all the difference. We know the overflowing gift of God’s grace through Jesus Christ, as our second reading proclaims. St. Francis de Sales notes that when we realize God’s all-encompassing presence, we experi-ence a safety that grows in us day by day in pro-portion as God’s grace grows in us, for grace brings forth confidence and confidence is never confounded. Have no fear, little flock - which is easier said than done, but is not impossible. Try this exercise. Recall that you are always in God’s presence. With that awareness, name your fears. Take a deep breath and give those fears to God as you release that breath. Then breathe deeply into your entire being the all-encompassing pres-ence of God. Have no fear.

For Consideration & Discussion Whom or what do you fear? What has calmed your fears in the past?

Responding to the Word Loving God, you promise to remain with us always. Fill me with the breath of your Holy Spirit, and make me aware of your promise so that I can trust your promise more and more. Amen. - Living the Word

Online Giving Options Now Available

St. Veronica parishioners now have two options for on-line giving to our parish. Especially in these times when there are concerns about exposure to disease or spreading of a virus, online giving is a convenient option to support our parish and its mission. Even though we can once again gather for public Mass in the church, your vital support can still happen regardless of where and how we are attending Mass. We now have online giving set up through Our Sunday Visitor, which is the company that provides our donation envelopes. The direct link is:

https://www.osvhub.com/stveronicassf/funds This link will also be posted on our parish website, www.stveronicassf.com, under “Online Giving”. Additionally, the Archdiocese of San Francisco has set up a way to make a one-time or monthly donation to any parish within the Archdiocese. Simply select the amount you wish to donate, designate the funds for St. Veronica Parish, and complete and billing and payment details. The direct link for online giving through the Archdiocese is:

www.sfarch.org/lifeline

Regardless of how our parishioners are giving, thank you to everyone who has continued

to support the parish while “staying safe at home”!

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

What is spiritual communion? St. Thomas Aquinas described it as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the most holy sacrament and lovingly embrace him”

at a me or in circumstances when we cannot receive him in sacramental Communion.

With the absence of public Masses in the Archdiocese of San Francisco due to the shelter in place order,

the opportunity for receiving spiritual communion is par cularly appropriate.

Spiritual communion needs no special instruc on; it only requires the same disposi on as the actual recep on of the sacrament and a turning to Jesus

with the heart.

No par cular prayer or formulary is required; however, to help focus a proper inten on, recita on of a prayer is suggested. One of the most popular is

that composed by St. Alphonsus Liguori:

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things

and I desire you with all my heart. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already in my heart

and unite myself to you completely. Please do not let me ever be separated from you.

Visit www.sfarch.org for more prayer and devo onal resources.
