May St. Veronica Church become a spiritual home where your

faith and fellowship may be nourished with inspiration for you

to live a life of service and generosity toward God and others.

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

Eastering Jesus: The British Jesuit poet Gerard Man-

ley Hopkins in his poem “The Wreck of the Deutsch-

land” says: “Let him easter in us, be a dayspring to the

dimness of us, be a crimson-crested east.” Hopkins is

convinced that the meaning of Easter is that the risen

Christ keeps doing his “eastering” in our lives. Easter

therefore can be looked at as a verb rather than a noun.

Easter is not so much an individual act but a continuous

process of what risen Christ can do in our lives. He can

give us a healing and forgiving love. Again and again,

when he enters the locked doors, he does not criticize

or reprove the disciples for having abandoned or denied

or betrayed him but all he offers is: “Peace be with

you.” That is how Jesus easters in us. His Easter pres-

ence is transformative. We can be turned from fear to

courage; from sinfulness to grace; from anxiety to

peace. Jesus wants to easter in us this Easter season.

Shall we have the love and faith to let him do just that?

Easter Quotes: “He departed from our sight that we

might return to our heart, and there find Him. For He

departed, and behold, He is here.” --- St. Augustine.

“The resurrection gives my life meaning and direction

and the opportunity to start over no matter what my

circumstances.” --- Robert Flatt.

Faith Formation First Communion Part I: Last Sat-

urday May 06th, 27 of the Faith Formation children

made the First Communion. The church was filled with

families and friends. To see these children receive the

Body of Christ for the first time with faith, awe, and

excitement is an inspiration to all of us who might have

the tendency to take the Eucharist lightly. The Eucha-

rist is the source and summit of Christian life. It is the

sacrament that brings us together day after day, week

after week. These children are in total amazement of

this sacrament. It would be most beneficial for all of us

to approach this sacrament of life at which Jesus be-

come the Bread of Life for us with deep faith and ut-

most reverence. Congratulations to the children who

received their First Holy Communion!

Repair My Church (RMC): This project of renova-

tion of our church continues. The committee met last

week. As you know well, Phase I turned out very well.

Now phase II will include doors, lighting, sound sys-

tem, and windows. In the next few weeks we are hop-

ing, God willing, to complete this project. Please keep

supporting RMC!

Mother’s Day: On the occasion of Mother’s Day, may

I have the honor of wishing all the mothers, grandmoth-

ers, and great grandmothers at St. Veronica a Happy

and Beautiful Mother’s Day? Thank you for being

mothers. Thanks to you, we understand what it is to

love, nurture, share, and be selfless. Here’s something

to laugh out loud!

Lessons from My Mother: My mother taught me TO

APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE: “If you’re

going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished

cleaning.” My mother taught me LOGIC: “Because I

said so, that’s why.” My mother taught me MORE

LOGIC: “If you fall out of that swing and break your

neck, you’re not going to the store with me.” My moth-

er taught me FORESIGHT: “Make sure you wear

clean underwear, in case you’re in an accident.” My

mother taught me IRONY: “Keep crying, and I’ll give

you something to cry about.” My mother taught me

about CONTORTIONISM: “Will you look at that dirt

on the back of your neck!” My mother taught me about

STAMINA: “You’ll sit there until all that spinach is

gone.” My mother taught me about WEATHER: “This

room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it.”

My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY: “If I told

you once, I’ve told you a million times. Don’t exagger-

ate!” My mother taught me the CIRCLE OF LIFE: “I

brought you into this world, and I can take you out.”

My mother taught me about BEHAVIOUR MODIFI-

CATION: “Stop acting like your father!” My mother

taught me about ENVY: “There are millions of less

fortunate children in this world who don’t have won-

derful parents like you do.” My mother taught me about

ANTICIPATION: “Just wait until we get home.” My

mother taught me about RECEIVING: “You are going

to get it when you get home!” My mother taught me

MEDICAL SCIENCE: “If you don’t stop crossing

your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way.” My

mother taught me ESP: “Put your sweater on; don’t

you think I know when you are cold?” My mother

taught me HUMOUR: “When that lawn mower cuts

off your toes, don’t come running to me.” My mother

taught me HOW TO BECOME AN ADULT: “If you

don’t eat your vegetables, you’ll never grow up.” My

mother taught me GENETICS: “You’re just like your

father.” My mother taught me about my ROOTS:

“Shut that door behind you. Do you think you were

born in a barn?” My mother taught me WISDOM:

“When you get to be my age, you’ll understand.” And

my favorite: My mother taught me about JUSTICE:

“One day you’ll have kids, and I hope they turn out just

like you.”

Reflecting on the Word

Fifth Sunday of Easter

Have your experienced life’s growing pains?

As a young parish musician, it wasn’t until the

priest/choir director was transferred and I became

the director that I wondered if I had what I needed to

take on that role. Friends, colleagues, and choir

members assured me that I did. They’d show me the

way. They did and I became a director. Growing

pains!

Jesus prepares the disciples for his return to the

Father. They experience growing pains and need his

reassurance. Jesus tells them they know the way.

He had shown it to them. They continue to show it

to each other by living what Jesus taught them. The

early church experienced growing pains when Gen-

tile and Jewish Christians were treated differently.

The community prayed, asked the Spirit’s guidance,

and seven were called forth. Through the laying on

of hands in the power of the Holy Spirit a new min-

istry, that of deacon, developed. Peter reminded the

community that they are, “a chosen race, a royal

priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own.”

They announce the praises of the One who called

them out of darkness into a wonderful life (1 Peter

2:9). Growing pains.

We experience growing pains in our lives of

faith. Certainty can be followed by wonderment.

We ask, “Is God near? Does our faith make any dif-

ference at all?” We need to remember that Jesus is

our cornerstone. We’ve seen him in those who

make his presence known. He has chosen us as his

own people and made us a holy priesthood to give

God praise and worship. When in doubt, turn to

God in prayer. Call on the Holy Spirit and let Jesus

- our way, our truth, and our life - be your guide.

For Prayerful Consideration & Discussion

How do you recharge your identity as Christ’s

chosen, holy people when that is needed?

How have your responded to life’s growing

pains? - Living the Word
