TRUTH TO POWER

Today’s Gospel reading shows that Pontius

Pilate, the local governor of the powerful Roman

Empire, did not know what to make of Jesus. Jesus

was obviously not a mob leader or a con man.

Jewish leaders said he claimed to be King of the

Jews - a potential threat to Roman rule - yet he

commanded no army. Jesus said, “My kingdom

does not belong to this world.” More importantly,

he added, “I came into the world, to testify to the

truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to

my voice” (John 18:36, 37). The Gospels clearly

show the political maneuvering between Roman

rulers and Jewish religious leaders; Jesus was a

puzzle to them all. Pilate “found no fault in him.”

Jesus ruled by neither violence nor oppression; he

simply witnessed to God’s truth. Anyone seeking

this truth has only to listen and to respond to be-

come part of the kingdom of God. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Advent Candle Lighters Needed!

Parishioners are needed to light the Advent Wreath candles at all mass-

es during the four weeks of Advent. If you are interested, call the Pastoral

Center at 588-1455 to sign up.

Instructions and guidance will be provided. Individuals and families are

welcome to participate.

Thank you for your sacrificial offering in supporting St. Veronica.

Due to holiday printing schedules, our collection numbers for last week

will be reflected in a future bulletin. Thank you for your continued support.

Dear St. Veronica Families,

Thanks to the generous contributions from our school

community, we have been able to help 2 schools in New York

who are suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Like many Americans I was heartbroken by the devastating

effects of this “superstorm.” This seemed like a perfect oppor-

tunity for our students to put their faith into action. I was over-

whelmed when our students contributed $1751 which is more

than twice what was anticipated.

I contacted a colleague in the Schools Office for the

Archdiocese of New York who connected me with St. Brigid

School in Manhattan. The basement there had been flooded

and many of their families were without electricity. We re-

sponded immediately with Emergency Blankets, hats, gloves

and socks. These supplies arrived just before they were hit

with a snow storm. I spoke with the vice-principal last week

and she was amazingly grateful for our prompt response and

generous support.

In the meantime, I found another school just outside of

New York City in a beach community known as the Rocka-

ways. St. Rose of Lima School is within a block of the Atlantic

Ocean. Their families have lost homes, cars, and personal ef-

fects. They were installing a generator in the hopes of returning

to school on Thursday, November 15. The remainder of what

we collected ($1050) will go to this principal to help her pro-

vide Thanksgiving dinners for the school families.

Thank you again for all your generous support of this project.

Many Blessings,

Mrs. Theresa Sinclair

Dear Parishioners,

China Travel Notes--- Xian to Chengdu: Last

week I mentioned the highlights of Xian---the

Terracotta Warriors, the ancient 16-mile long

Wall of Xian, Wild Goose (Buddhist ) Pagoda,

and a dinner with Tang dynasty-style dance and

song show. Winding up our stay in Xian, we

took an hour’s flight to Chengdu, famous for

giant pandas. The Chengdu airport like many

other airports in China was new, squeaky clean,

and well-equipped. We visited the Panda Re-

search Institute and Breeding Center, a place

popular for tourists from all over the world. We

saw six pandas lounging around on their bellies

on a wooden platform, chomping lazily on bam-

boo stems and leaves. The pandas totally ig-

nored the onlookers. We saw more pandas rest-

ing on branches of trees. Have you heard about

the red pandas? We saw them. They look like

raccoons, only a little larger in size. In the

breeding center, there are new-born cute and

cuddly giant panda cubs in nurseries and some

new-born babies in incubators.

It is estimated that there are only about

1600 pandas left in the world. A total of 239

pandas are in captivity (128 in Wolong and 67

in Chengdu). As you know, the giant pandas are

an endangered species. It is because of the loss

or fragmentation of their natural habitat. That is

why aggressive conservation efforts are under-

way. Pandas International Organization was es-

tablished in 2000 to raise the awareness about

the plight of the pandas and to support the Chi-

nese Government’s efforts to save and protect

the pandas. All of which is in line with the

Christian commitment to care for the environ-

ment and protect it. We are all called to be re-

sponsible stewards in taking care of God’s crea-

tion. The planet earth needs to be healthy and

safe for all creatures to survive and flourish.

God wants us to love the earth and tenderly take

care of it.

Word of God - Feast of Christ the King:

Where are all the kings and queens who ruled

the world? The mighty emperors are all in the

dust. Their conquests and triumphs, their pomp

and power, have all gone with the wind. They

all lived for themselves and had to wage wars to

protect their own interests and their lands and

treasures. They had to survive lest someone else

usurped their power. What about Jesus the King?

“All the armies that ever marched, all the navies

that ever sailed, all the kings that ever ruled, have

not affected the life of the human person as much

as that one solitary life.” Jesus our King eternal

gave himself away and died for us. His conquest

is love and service and humility. Though every-

thing belongs to him, he is a poor King: “The Son

of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” His power

shines through the washing of the feet of his disci-

ples. He died so we can have life, abundant life.

He is the King of Hearts! The way we can love

and honor this King is to be like him: to be other-

centered, to forget self and always think of the

welfare of others, to love and serve, to share all

we are and have. Let Christ have complete sway

over our hearts and minds. May Christ rule over

our lives! Long live Christ the King!

Advent is on the way! This is the last Sunday

before Advent begins. Next Sunday is the First

Sunday of Advent. Let’s prepare ourselves for the

holy season of Advent. Jesus Christ is alive, and

he comes into our lives in ever new and mysteri-

ous ways. The mystery of Jesus Christ makes the

reality of our lives filled with meaning, purpose,

and energy. Is there room for Jesus in our lives?

Some Love Quotes to Ponder:

“If you judge people, you have no time to love

them”---Mother Teresa

“The best and most beautiful things in this world

cannot be seen or even heard, but must be felt

with the heart.”---Helen Keller

“I love you, not only for what you are, but for

what I am when I am with you.” ---Roy Croft

“A kiss is a lovely trick, designed by nature, to

stop words when speech becomes superfluous.”

--- Ingrid Bergman

Solution to last week’s puzzle This week’s Gospel puzzle

St. Andrew Feast day: November 30

Patron of Fishermen

St. Andrew was the first disciple of Christ. An-

drew had spent a little time with Jesus when he

realized that he was truly the Messiah. Andrew

brought his brother Simon (St. Peter) to Jesus

who received him as His disciple. He is said to

have been put to death on a cross, to which he

was tied, not nailed. He lived for two days and

continued preaching until his death.

The Season of Giving

from all of our members in the year ahead.

ular offerings or if you plan to make an

additional gift before the end of the year,

we encourage you to check out our elec-

you may find electronic giving a most wel-

come way to make contributions.
