Gospel: Mark 1:29-39

Fr. Del...Points to Ponder, Part 19 This past summer, I heard somebody say that, “We used to bless children and teach adults. Now we teach children and bless adults.” Yes, we can get things backward, even with our faith. We are never finished being formed in the ways of Christ. We always have the responsibility of passing our faith on to the next generation. Adults are continually forming themselves to pass the blessing of their faith on to our children – not the other way around.

We can sometimes convince ourselves that, “If I learn, then I can witness.” “If I know, then I can follow.” “If I understand, then I can convince others.” Our faith nuances these statements. Actually, it’s by witnessing, following and convincing that we come to deeper understanding of God’s desire for the human family. The experience of Jesus Christ in our lives comes first! The rest follows. “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” This may be the most famous quote from Pope Paul VI (pope,1963-1978). It comes from his Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Nuntiandi (Evangelization In the Modern World), published on December 8, 1975). The entire document is worth your time to read, and I encourage you to do so. Our primary task is to be a follower of Christ; each of us has the potential to be an expert in the field. Catholicism has emphasized two Greek understandings of our mission as Christians. Didache (teaching) and Kerygma (Good News). Both are important, but the latter comes first. Only when we are a person of prayer, service and worship can we have a mature appreciation of teaching. As church, we’ve tried it the other way around, and it hasn’t worked, hasn’t changed hearts. We would probably do well to once again appreciate the importance of blessing children and teaching adults. Then we all become mature children of God.

The Catholic Education Foundation is again accepting applications for needs-based elementary school tuition grants for the 2018-2019 school year. Grant awards range from $250.00 to $1,000.00 per student and can be used at any Catholic elementary school within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. The deadline to apply is January 31, 2018. The Catholic Education Foundation tuition grant program became a reality in 2017-2018 through the One Faith, One Hope, One Love Capital Campaign. Due to the generosity of the parishes in the archdiocese, the Catholic Education Foundation will again be able to offer over $2,000,000.00 this year in financial aid. For more details and to apply, visit www.catholicbestchoice.org.

The Adult Spirituality Institute is taking reservations for their upcoming sessions held at The Athenaeum of Ohio. The first session starts on February 5th, and is titled “Cincinnati’s Catholic History,” taught by Fr. Dave Endres. Sessions are on Monday mornings, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon for four weeks. For more information and to register, go to www.spirituality-institute.com.

Discerning your next step? Make a difference, become a mountain manager today!

Glenmary Home Missioners is hiring five mountain managers for its Group Volunteer Program in Joppa Mountain, Tennessee. These individuals plan the service, social and spiritual activities for the high school and college groups that visit the mountain each week and serve as Glenmary’s liaison to the Appalachian community. They visit families and individuals in the area, delivering food, making home repairs, cutting firewood and working at local nursing and children’s homes.

Mountain managers live a simple life and receive a monthly stipend, health insurance, room, board and use of the program’s vehicles. The position is typically a six-month or yearlong assignment, though managers can choose to renew their post for a second year. For more information, visit www.glenmary.org/long-term-volunteers/, or contact Joe Grosek, Volunteer Director, at (606) 202-3658 or [email protected].

THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 28, 2018

Bible Study “IN THIS TIME OF NEED” – THE BOOK OF TOBIT The Book of Tobit tells the story of three people: Tobit, for whom the book is named, his son Tobiah, and a distant relative, Sarah. Tobit and Sarah are beset by very difficult problems and despair to the point of praying for death (Sarah even contemplates suicide!) because they are not at peace with themselves or others and they feel totally alone and abandoned.

This Biblical story has many parallels to our world today. People suffer many difficulties: life threatening or debilitating illnesses, natural catastrophes, loss of loved ones, disappointment in their church and its religious representatives, political issues that conflict with their moral and ethical sense of rightness, and economic instability. These are just a few of the problems that impose upon our lives and many times they lead to the same despair and depression experienced by Tobit and Sarah.

The Book of Tobit demonstrates how God answers the prayers of those who trust in Him and manages the circumstances of their lives, often in unexpected ways, in order to bring His plans for them to fulfillment. This message is critical in our currently troubled world.

TUESDAY EVENING, 7:00 TO 8:30 P.M., AT ST. VERONICA PARISH MINISTRY CENTER, FEBRUARY 13 THROUGH MARCH 20, 2018

Archbishop Schnurr Urges Your Support of the

Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act:

This legislation, which prohibits ending an unborn life after 20 weeks gestation on the scientific evidence that fetuses can feel pain by that point, passed the House of Representatives on October

3, and is now in committee in the U.S. Senate as S.1922. Please consider using simple templates found at www.catholiccincinnati.org/ministries-offices/respect-life-2/unborn-act to write our Senators, urging them to support this common-sense legislation that in many polls 60% of Americans also support. Letters to our Senators can be found in the Narthex of Church today. If you are interested, please sign the letters and help support the lives of countless unborn children and help their mothers and fathers with the situations that they endure.

THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 28, 2018

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is scheduled on Sundays either at Mass or at 12:30 p.m. Expectant parents should plan on attending the Baptismal Preparation Program, held six times a year. Call the Parish Office to schedule the Baptism and Preparation Program. The Sacrament of Baptism for adults and school age children is usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil, along with the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Preparation occurs in steps and stages throughout the year with weekly meetings on Sunday after 9:30 a.m. Mass. Call Emily Besl at 688-3143, or the Parish Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING The Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation or Confession) is celebrated each Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m., or by appointment with the Pastor. Seasonal Penance Services are also celebrated. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick may be scheduled by calling the Pastor before a medical procedure, or in the event of a serious illness, or after each Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month. When hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office; this is the only way we know if a parishioner has been hospitalized. In case of medical emergency or death, call the Parish Office and follow prompts.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT The Sacrament of Marriage is scheduled by calling the pastor or deacon to begin the process of marriage preparation, at least six months prior to the anticipated wedding date. A date for the wedding is set only after meeting with the pastor or deacon. Discernment for the Sacrament of Orders (ordination to the Priesthood and Diaconate) is facilitated by contacting the pastor or Vocation Director of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Those interested in pursuing Religious Life may also make these contacts.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Religious Education Program (R.E.P.) for children (ages 3 years through 8th Grade) begins each year in September and ends in May. Call Theresa Kearney, Coordinator of Children’s Faith Formation, or Paige Umstead, Administrative Assistant, at 688-3155 for more information.
