2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents/guardians, I hope all is well. A very happy New Year to you and all your loved ones. Welcome to January, the month of Courage. The virtue of courage helps us to take the initiative to make changes in our lives and/ or to accept changes brought before us - not an easy thing. Over the next few weeks, we will once again be teaching the students to stand up for what is right and not what is popular. They will be encouraged to ask for direction when faced with difficulties and will be provided with strategies to help deal with the everyday challenges of living and spending time with other people. One of those strategies will be the ability to think of the ‘other person’, and in so doing, temper our words with mercy and understanding. They will also be told that being scared is okay but not doing something about it is not. We need your support as always in the teaching and support of our children. All the very best, and may this year be better than the last one. Sincerely, G. Danfulani St. Ursula CATHOLIC SCHOOL 215 Livingston Rd. • Catholic Graduate Expectations Virtue of the month is

    Courage

    Affirmations:

I will stand up for what I know is right and

    just.

I will face challenges, fears and difficulties

    with fortitude.

I will take responsibility for reaching my

    potential.

I have thoughts and opinions that matter.

    I make good choices.

I have hope for the future.

    I solve problems with knowledge,

    understanding and prayer.

I can begin to make changes in my life.

I can support others in need.

I can take the first step in helping myself.

School messenger is now up and running! School Messenger is an automated notification system that will contact parents whose child is absent when the absence is not reported in advance. The automated notification system will attempt to contact parents at multiple contact points until a reason is submitted for the absence. If our system is unable to reach the designated contacts, office staff will follow up. If you report your child’s absence in advance using the SafeArrival toll-free number, website or SchoolMessenger app, you will NOT receive these notifications. We will also be using this medium to send out our monthly newsletter and calendar.

Goal-setting: In anticipation of the Term 1 report card, a focus on the Learning Skills continues to be encouraged for students of all grades. The online platform https://myblueprint.ca has excellent resources for students to create and reflect on goals for both academic and personal purposes. https://myblueprint.ca/support/resources/education-planner/LSeAJ1TjmEG6yMQkMqY2m/

Self-Regulation: Here are a couple of online resources that can help students with the development of self-regulation skills: http://www.gonoodle.com and http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/childcare/selfRegulate.html

    Home/School Connection

Questions to ask your child when supporting them with

    homework:

    What are you working on?

    What are you learning?

Is it challenging or not? Why?

What do you do when you are stuck on a task?

How do you know you are on the right track?

What resources do you use at school to complete this

    kind of work?

What resources do you need at home to complete this

    kind of work?

    Reflections for a parent

Does my child have a quiet space to complete her/his

    homework?

Have I set the framework for homework routines?

Do I monitor my child’s homework for completion?

Can I give my child feedback based on the learning

    goal and success criteria provided?
