Today, Sunday, we will be singing the Alleluiafor the last time until the Easter Vigil! These final daysbefore we begin Lent on Ash Wednesday are variously referred to as Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, etc. It is human nature to celebrate on the one hand

and on the other to focus on a goal, in this case a spiri-tual goal. As you can see from our inserts we have agenerous offering of Ash Wednesday Masses and distri-bution of ashes. You can also see that we have someextra Lenten services scheduled for the Wednesdays andsome Fridays of Lent. After our Mardi Gras celebra-tions, including the one we celebrate here (Saturday night) we are invited by the liturgies and the prayers of the Church to RENEW our own membership in thechurch! Not quite as you would renew membership in agym or other service but similar in the sense that we areasked to recommit ourselves consciously to God. Yes,this may seem obvious, but sometimes it is necessary tostate the obvious. Just as married couples, in order tolive happy and fulfilling lives together, require repeatedexpressions of affection and concern so our Faith re-quires repeated thoughts and efforts toward living forGod. This is not easy since we live in a materialistic cul-ture and sometimes God seems so distant and unseenlike that song, “I really want to see you, my Lord, but ittakes so long I know…” As true as that may be, that itseems difficult to find the Lord, the Church recognizesand God has willed that we encounter Him through ma-terial things like other human beings and bread and

water, etc. That is to say, through physical entities that

become symbols or sacraments of our spiritual life. TheCommunion at Mass, the needy person on the street, the prisoner (see Matthew 25), creation itself (see Gene-sis) become signs of Christ, of God. At the same time

we cannot understand or know God and God’s wayscompletely which includes the classical question of why bad things happen to good people. In fact, John Cassionsays that, in part, there is always something good thatcan come out of what seems to be bad; that is, our salva-tion can come through the good and the apparently bad(see Job). Ashes too, then, are signs of both our mortal-ity, from dust to dust, and our immortality in Christ, signified by the fact that we bless the ashes during the

liturgy of the Church invoking Christ’s mercy and name. Thus, the Church teaches us to enter into Lent with joy as we prepare to celebrate Easter in a few weeks andonce again in the final and definitive Easter and Resur-rection for the followers, believers of Christ. I hope andpray that we all have a joyful Lent as we renew ourselvesby trusting God and praying for the world and doingacts of charity forothers. Fr. Paul E. Vigil
