PENTECOST SUNDAY - JUNE 4, 2017
Dear Parishioners and Friends:
The word “Pentecost” is Greek for 50th day. Pentecost began as a Jewish celebra on of the wheat harvest in late
spring. It took place when the harvest was ready. Later, it became customary to celebrate the feast 50 days a er the Passover. Jewish scholars had calculated that when their ancestors le Egypt, they arrived at Mount Sinai about 50 days later. It was there that God gave them the Law and made a covenant with them. “I will be your God, and you will be my people.” Our covenant rela onship with our loving God began with our Bap sm and con nues each day of our life –God offers and we accept: Come, Holy Spirit, into my heart and mind and life! The Church’s birthday gi s are here for us: peace-finding and peace-making. Sincerely yours, Fr. John Sakowski
Reflec on on the Gospel
Today we celebrate the birthday of the Church, and since we are the Church, we celebrate our community of faith. The Church remembers the moment when the breath of God rushed from the mouth of the risen Jesus filling the disciples with the Holy Spirit. In this moment of Pentecost, we are reborn! We are given the gi s of the Spirit (wisdom, understanding, counsel, for tude, knowledge, and reverence for the Lord), so that we can be sent to be Christ for the world. Let us be
open and vulnerable to the driving winds and tongues of flame that can signal a new Pentecost in each of us. Let God’s word once again bring us the power to renew the face of the earth.
