The second reading today from the Letter to the Hebrews makes me ask myself how strong is my faith? When honest with myself, there are times that I wish I had the strong faith of Abraham and Sarah of which Paul writes in this letter to encourage the Hebrews (and us!). But there are times… when my faith is tested… most recently being the death of parishioner Debbie Loughlin. Being a priest

doesn’t automatically mean that my faith will never be chal-lenged or tried and that I won’t have questions, doubts, fears just like everybody else. I recall reading a prayer for priests written by Fr. Karl Rahner, SJ. I would like to share it with you:

“My brothers and sisters, accept us as we are: men who, like you, need the mercy of God: poor men, weak, sinful, with faults and limited talents. Though we are men called by God, chosen by Him to be servants of the altar in your holy com-munity, we too grope through the darkness of the world (my emphasis). All we can do is travel with you into the light of God, our Father, who loves us, forgives us and sends Him-self in Jesus Christ and in the grace of the Holy Spirit. So you see, you must carry us just as we must carry you. Pray for us. Have patience with us. Carry us. Accept God’s Word and His Holy Mysteries from us.”

Franciscan Fr. Richard Rohr in Quotations for the Soul, uses an image from our American pastime – baseball – to describe faith. He says: “Faith is so rare and religion is so common because no one wants to live between first base and second base. Faith is the in-between space where you’re not sure you’ll make it to second base. You’ve let go of one thing and haven’t yet latched onto another: Most of us choose the security of first base.” God led Abraham and Sarah to embark on a lifelong journey to places they had not planned to go and among people they did not know. Then, when at last a child was given them, they acquiesced to the unthinkable possibility that their child and his life and destiny were not theirs to plan or protect. So many parents and caregivers face similarly unthinkable challenges in life. Yet faith must be summoned in that very moment when logic fails to satisfy and every reasonable hope seems to with-ers. This faith led Abraham and Sarah forward when every fiber of their beings yearned for a retreat to the safety, stability and familiarity of first base. Over the years as a priest, I have seen this kind of faith in so many parishioners who have faced all kinds of challenges in life. Their faith strengthens mine!

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary August 15

The Assumption of the blessed Virgin Mary will be cel-ebrated on Monday, August 15 at the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Although it is not a Holy Day of Obliga-tion this year, it is an opportuni-ty to enter more fully into the mystery of Mary’s love for her Son and the Church. Join us!

A Prayer for Our Parish We pray: justice for the falsely accused freedom for the wrongly imprisoned healing for the tortured or abused care for the orphan and widow concern for the refugee and dispossessed and above all forgiveness for our emotional detachment. May we weep as you weep love as you love and not be afraid to be angry for the sake of your children wherever they might be. Amen.

Faith and Formation Commission—Adult

C.A.R.E. CORNER Today's gospel passage is not the first time Jesus told his disciples to be less concerned about the im-mediate and material things of this world and in-stead to reach for and focus on the treasures of heav-en. A treasure is something we value and consider to be of great worth. What we devote our time and en-ergy to reveals who or what it is we truly treasure. Jesus said that is where our hearts can be found. Je-sus knew the real treasures in our lives are spiritual, not material. In order to be a faithful and prudent steward of the gifts we have in this life, we must recognize that there is even greater value in the gifts that lie beyond the boundaries of our earthly life. When we've been entrusted with much by God, we are accountable for much to God. The gifts God gives us are intended to be perpetuated and re-gifted to others. Gifts are meant to be given. Our primary task then on our earthly journey is to devote our en-ergies and attention to doing the will of our Divine Master so the Kingdom of Heaven can be made visi-ble around us. That's what Jesus did. We know where his heart was. Where can your heart be found right now?

Join a Bible Study at St. Thomas Millions of people, young and not-so-young, will begin a new course of studies in September. Will you be among them, stretching mind and heart to God? Registration is now open for the on-going weekly Bible Studies here. Choose what best suits you and join lively, interactive groups of people learning, discussing and pray-ing the Word of God. First and Second Samuel will consider some of the tow-ering names in the history of God’s Chosen people – Samu-el, Saul and David. Towering over them all is God and the question, “Who is King over Israel?” Look into fascinating stories of faithfulness – and betrayal, obedience – and all manner of mayhem, love – and war. What messages do they have for us today? Come and See! CHOOSE either 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. OR 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays from September 8 to May 25, 2017. Facilitat-ed by Chari Rosales, Director of Adult Faith Formation.

Acts of the Apostles invites all to walk the WAY of the early Church and discuss how it affects us today. Learn about and from the earliest Church leaders and communi-ties, bringing their experiences into today’s. This group meets Fridays from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m., from September 9, to May 19, 2017 and is facilitated by Audrey Easton, grad-uate of the Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet, and her team. Make a weekly commitment, or come whenyou can – and bring a friend! To participate, please RSVP by Septem-ber 1 to Marge Coronado at 630.355.8980 x118 or [email protected]. There will be a $15 fee for materials.

August 7 - Luke 12:32-48 “Be Prepared”. That’s the motto of the Boy Scouts and the message of this Gospel passage. What are you put-ting off in your spiritual life until “I have more time”? Yet, even our secular culture warns us to ‘Expect the Unexpected”. We will have to account for our lives be-fore God ‘one day’. There’s a Chinese proverb that says: ”I have always known this day would come, but yesterday I did not know it would be today.” Will you be ready?

St. Thomas the Apostle Brat Night for everyone!

Question of the week…

What should we do as we wait for Jesus’ return?

Catechists and Aides Needed for Religious Education Program Elementary—Thank you to those who have already come forward to help with the elementary Religious Education Program. We still have a need for a few more catechists as well as aides for Tuesdays 4:30 – 5:45 p.m. held at Brookdale School and Saturday morning held at All Saints Academy 8:30 – 9:45 a.m. or at 10:30 – 11:45 a.m. All volunteers must attend the workshop, “Protecting God’s Children” and have a background check. Catechists have some meetings to assist in sharing our faith with the children. Aides assist in rooms as needed but do not have meetings. This is a wonderful opportunity to continue your own faith journey and to share your gifts with God’s children. Please consider serving. Con-tact Patti Dougherty 630.355.8980 ext. 109 or email [email protected] for more infor-mation about training, your role and the calendar. Middle School—Christine Ramirez served as a mid-dle school catechist for two years while she was in high school. When writing about the experience, she reflected, “Thank you so much for allowing me to be a middle school catechist. These past two years have been an incredible journey and experience.” Five more catechists are needed for 2016-2017 middle school RE classes, and, like Christine says, it is an amazing journey. And so, if you EVER thought about ministering as a catechist, helping to form the faith of amazing young people, NOW is your chance! There are hopes and dreams for middle school faith formation that can only be realized with your help. Catechists are needed for both Saturday morning and Monday evening class sessions. For more infor-mation or to volunteer, contact Peggy Goralski at [email protected] or 630.355.8980, x123.

Religious Education Kick-Off All Pre-K through 8th grade families are invited to our Kick-Off on Sunday, August 28. We will meet in St. Thomas’ gym from 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. to meet some of our wonderful Religious Education volunteers, and class-mates, have refreshments, and a blessing. If you are able to provide a snack for the table, it would be greatly appre-ciated!! You are welcome to attend either the 9:30 mass before the Kick-Off or the 11:15 mass after it. Still need to register? Contact the Faith Formation Of-fice. We are happy to help you!

Just5Days…thanks to the Chaperones The members of our parish Just5Days middle school mission trip team returned safely from St. Joseph, Michi-gan. It was a wonderful week of serving, sharing, play-ing, and prayer. The week was made even more wonder-ful because of the tremendous group of chaperones: Tisha Danehl, Bianca Ballard, Tim Lankisch, and Matt Fletcher. Thank you so much for giving of your time and choosing to spend it at Just5Days. You helped to enrich the experi-ence for all involved. You are the best!

Grandparents Day at St. Pat’s Middle school students and friends… come and help with BINGO at St. Pat’s on Saturday, August 13, from 1-3 pm. Volunteers should meet at St. Thomas at 1 pm. Come and join in the fun!

Be a Part of Harvest Sunday Mark your calendars now! Harvest Sunday, the annual city-wide food drive sponsored by the Catholic parishes of Naperville, will take place on October 30 (flyer delivery and food collection at Casey’s) and November 6 (food pickup and sorting). More information will be provided in the coming weeks.

St. Thomas Middle School RE Receives Grant The Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) has award-ed a grant in the amount of $350 to St. Thomas for the purchase of the resource, Sunday Gospel Reflections & Activities for Teens. This resource will be used to guide middle school RE classes in breaking open the Word and discussing the upcoming Sunday’s Gospel. We are grate-ful to the many donors who supported the CEF Annual Campaign and who have made this grant possible.

Golf Outing Results The Holes-for-Hope Golf Outing to benefit St. Thomas Cares, held Monday, July 25, was a wonderful success from any aspect. The golfers were challenged by the Bolingbrook course. The evening social hour and dinner was a great party in the spacious dining area. The silent and live auctions were successful. The winning live auction bid for “Dinner at the Rectory” (Fr. Don – wine connoisseur and sommelier, and Fr. Dof – Celebri-ty Chef) was $1,900! The St. Thomas Wall of Wine Raffle (50 bottles) was won by parishioner Sally Meno. Party at Sally’s House! Date to be announced! J Congratulations, Sally. The final overall financial results will be announced soon, but more than $25,000 was raised for St. Thomas Cares. Thanks to the Golf Outing Committee, volunteers, silent auction and wine donators, and sponsors!

Homeless Alliance Takes Debate to Naperville City Council The St. Thomas Homeless Alliance Ministry continues to take action to reduce discrimination related to Family Choice Vouchers … discrimination that allows landlords to refuse to even consider renting to families with a voucher, when in fact there are many advantages for landlords that accept vouchers. The Homeless Alliance collaborated with speakers from Hope Fair Housing, the DuPage Housing Authori-ty, and the Naperville Homeowners Association to sup-port a change to the Fair Housing Ordinance to include Family Choice Vouchers as a “legal Source of income”.

The Council accepted the Homeless Alliance recommendation to table the question until the October 4 meeting to allow further discussion. Stay Tuned: It may be important to fill city hall with people on October 4! Below is an excerpt from the Homeless Alliance talk. To view the full talk, go to www.stapostle.org and type “homeless” in the Search Win-dow. “In helping hundreds of families each year with emergency financial assistance, we hear many stories. A single moth-er of four called to ask if we knew of any rental housing that would accept her Family Choice Voucher. She had less than a month to find housing or lose her voucher. She had just spent 15 minutes in a phone conversation with a landlord. The conversation was going very well. Then she mentioned that she had a Family Choice Voucher. The landlord imme-diately stated that he would not rent to her. The ordinance change would NOT require the landlord to accept a voucher holder. The landlord would ONLY be required to consider the applicant like any other non-voucher holder … allow the voucher holder to complete an applica-tion and proceed with his/her normal process … credit history, criminal background, references, etc. And then make a decision.”

From the Behavioral Health Team In the Wake of Tragedy: How Should We Talk With Our Kids The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers a number of tips on the most effective ways to help kids cope. Set the example. Children will quickly pick up on

the emotional cues of the adults in their lives. Main-taining a calm attitude and avoiding appearing anx-ious or frightened will help them model the behavior.

Be Honest. It’s not helpful to pretend the event didn’t happen or wasn’t serious. Children may re-spond by thinking you are too afraid to tell the truth.

Being upset is okay. It’s impor tant to reassure chil-dren that being upset is to be expected. Feelings of anger are okay too, but kids need help from parents to express those feelings in an appropriate way.

Offer reassurance. If the event is not close to home and not an immediate threat, emphasize the fact they are in a safe place.

People are getting help. Explain that emergency workers and other officials are doing everything they can to help those who were affected.

Monitor your stress. Adults are not immune to many of the same feelings of worry, anger and frustra-tion. Connect with friends, family, religious leaders or mental health experts who can help you process your thoughts.

What experts say matters most is that adults have an open dialogue with kids. This lays the groundwork to help them cope with tough matters long-term. (source: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

Bless them and their teachers and staff. Give the strength and grace as their bodies grow; Wisdom and knowledge to their minds As they search for understanding; And peace and zeal to their hearts. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

"Attaining and Retaining Employee Referrals” Bob Rosell

This presentation will demonstrate the importance of having Employee Referrals as part of your current and future employ-ment searches, and is meant to walk through all the steps from start to finish in obtaining, getting sponsorship, writing intro-duction messages, and talking with potential employee refer-rals. More people are landing jobs today through employee referrals compared to any other means. Robert (Bob) Rosell's career started in IT where he worked across multiple technologies and platforms for nine years, and then he found his way into a Quality Management role where he has been ever since for over the last 12 years. Bob has con-tributed to the development and continual improvement regard-ing all content associated with the IL WorkNet workshop pro-gram since 2009, and has founded Social Media Emotional Intelligence (SMEI). Currently Bob is working for Electro-Motive Diesel in a Software Quality Assurance engineering and management role on several multi-year projects, and was placed there through several management referrals who Bob helped place there in 2010 who he previously worked with at Motorola. For more detailed career and biography information about Bob, go to http://www.linkedin.com/in/robertrosell .
